yeah absolutely! It's one of the few shows that leaves a hole in your heart for a while. It's also really cool to see Ashita no Joe references in tons of other anime/manga, especially the newer ones! For example, this past season's very popular show Oshi no Ko. If I remember correctly, it has a "pure white ash" and death pose reference.
The show is fairly known here in Italy, even though most people call it "Rocky Joe". We're also lucky to have an excellent edition of the manga, and now the first series has just been released on blu ray

Ashita no joe is genuinely a masterpiece to me. Joe yabukis development to me actually shocked me because his emotional impact on me was amazing. From the soundtrack, to the visuals and dialogues, it was incredible. I cried twice watching this anime too. One, when carlos went punch drunk, and the conclusion of ashita no joe. Overrall, this is an amazing video ❤.
Thanks for the kind words. I also agree. I almost cried at both of those parts as well. I’ll probably rewatch it in the near future too. It’d be nice if there were bluray’s for it in the states, but I don’t believe there are which is a shame. Maybe someday…
My friend's brother told me about this series and so I decided to watch it about a year back, ended up loving it so much. It was refreshing watching something that was grounded in reality and on a subject like boxing but with character driven drama. I was never into boxing before this , the only thing I've ever done fighting wise was martial arts aka Karate. The characters don't act like anime characters in my opinion but more like real people, Joe is an amazing character same with Rikiishi and their relationship, Danpei too. All of the characters were great honestly. Loved the artwork and animation, its a product of its time and something you don't see anymore (thank the great Osamu Dezaki for season 2) The music for both seasons is fantastic, I've always been a huge fan of 70's and 80's music (im a musician myself who plays keys and owns a lot of equipment from that time period like Rhodes Pianos and Synthesizers) alot of the tracks in season 1 can be haunting and season 2 has more 80's funky jazz and bossa nova genres. In short the series deserves more recognition, despite it being about boxing its more character driven and really has that human feel. I wont spoil it for others but the ending of the second season i was almost about to cry at the end and this is coming from someone that doesn't get emotional very easily, that is how good it is.
I’m basically the same as you. This show is incredible and actually a couple episodes before the end actually made me tear up a bit more than the end itself.
@@anihive8487 It really hits you hard when it has characters you genuinely care about and real character development, the way its written is just so good. There's a few Japanese fan groups who still talk and make fanart for the series. There's an artist I follow called Chihiro, they make Joe fanart and I even sent him a message showing him my Joe cosplay. He actually responded back to me in English saying hes happy the series is still loved over the world and that its not forgotten.
It's always excellent to see another person enjoying Ashita no Joe on earth. It seems you haven't read the manga, so I'll recommend you do that. The manga is absolutely incredible. The Art, especially in the fights, has more intensity than I've ever seen in any other manga. Not only that but based on some things you left out, I'd guess the manga goes more in-depth with the characters. First off, I want to put out there that the Shiraki boxing gym was created specifically for Rikiishi Toru. That's an important distinction to make because it sets up Yoko taking ownership of the gym later in the series to indirectly "help" Joe. Going deeper into that, upon several rereads of the manga, Yoko stands out as one of the most interesting female characters in shounen or just manga in general. Go back and read some of her dialogue in the early Juvenile Detention Arc. She gets hyper-excited about the act of boxing itself, marveling at its brutality while also not having the stomach to see it through. This remains a theme in the entire manga as Yoko is a key piece in setting up the rivalry between Rikiishi and Joe but also acts as the force to try and ensure they don't fight later. Yoko and Joe are, interestingly, two sides of the same coin. Both latch on to the brutality of boxing. The difference is what roles they take in the participation. Also, later on in the series, Yoko actively manipulates Joe into getting what she wants to see out of him while also believing she is doing what is best for him. It's a very interesting dynamic you wouldn't expect out of a series that came out in the late 60s. That a female character has so much going on is very cool. Not only that, she's portrayed as smarter and quicker-witted than her male contemporaries in the promotion side of things of boxing, while never understanding the "man's romance" of it until arguably the very end. Also, I don't want to go too heavy into spoilers so I won't give my full thoughts on Rikiishi and Joe, but I will say it is the best rivalry in all of manga. Because, for the whole manga, Joe fights Rikiishi, even when he isn't. Every moment Joe "walks himself down into Hell" for the sake of boxing, he is stepping into Rikiishi's shoes. The first person, as stated by Joe, to ever truly see him as he truly was and accept him. Anyway, I could go in way more on Joe himself or the plot but I'll leave it there. Ashita no Joe is a masterpiece and my second favorite manga behind Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. An odd combo there lol.
You should be the one writing these videos. Enjoyable to see this writeup but even more enjoyable because you’ve read YKK. Being someone whose favorite next to this and Hajime no Ippo is the aria series, YKK is recommended to me nonstop. I gotta get into that.
@@anihive8487 You should definitely give it a read. Recently, after years of hoping, the series finally got an omnibus in English. It doesn't cover the whole series, the first 3 volumes out of 14 I think, but it would be a good introduction. Hitoshi Ashinano is my favorite mangaka and I could probably write a 15-page essay on everything that makes his work stand out compared to his peers. The beauty of his compositional layouts astounds me. Especially later on in the series when he really starts to come into his own as an author. It is an open-ended type of series where the peace in-between moments is the primary draw of the series. After YKK, Ashinano would go on to improve and refine his personal brand of storytelling that relies far more on what I'd like to call the "negative space" of a narrative rather than what lies on the surface. By his latest series, Kotonoba Drive, he has stopped using screen tones entirely and is using only really the bare essentials of line work, and yet his simplicity is something so divine to look at. I personally have redrawn more than a hundred of his panels in an effort to understand a little of his thought process but can never quite figure it out. His works feel like a hazy kind of daydream you might experience while resting in the sun while listening to your favorite song. A bit off-topic, but I always felt the musical style of Lamp and Hitoshi complement each other well. Funnily, the restaurant where the main character of Kotonoba Drive works is called "LAMP" and I was listening to Lamp while reading it. Lol, fun happenstance there. Also, unsurprisingly, I have dabbled with the idea of making an essay-based TH-cam channel since I have this kind of anime/writing debate with my friends fairly often but never got around to it.

@@anihive8487 I've seen it. It's worth the watch. The cel animated episodes are very beautiful. It's the kind of anime they don't (actually can't) make anymore. The animators really understood what made the series pleasant.
I rewatch the last 3 episodes of Ashita no Joe every few months. It’s my favorite anime of all time, and it’s truly phenomenal how much Joe changes Jose in such a short time span. I always viewed Jose as a mirror image of Joe, and I wanted Joe to become the champion and have his own family. In the end though, there never really was a happy ending for Joe, it was either to stay the lone wolf he always was, or to die in pursuit of his passion.
fascinating to see how far ahead of its time the show is, and even 40 years later megalobox returning, I like the art style in megalobox makes me think of studio Manglobe anime like Samurai Champloo and Michiko Hatchin
I just finished watching both seasons some months ago, and seeing this video pop up on my recommendations surprised me, even more when u talked about the the great soundtrack. Thanks for this video, Ashita No Joe deserves more recognition nowadays !
This show came out when my dad was a kid, and I believe that the new gen of anime is good, but the old era was more about the feeling rather than the animation and action
I watched Saizens sub of AnJ up until the Rikishi fight and then AnJ2 back in 2014 when someone had subbed all the episodes on dailymotion. It took a long time but this anime is finally getting the credit it deserves.
Yeah it’s always been on my plan to watch since my friend of mine always talked about how it was his favorite sports show. I like sports and I had time, so I watched it and now it’s my favorite sports show!

Megalobox is a great love letter to Joe and the gear system is really cool but also still feels very grounded. I do wonder if we are going to get a remake at some point. I also watched Joe recently because i watched hajime no ippo a while back and heard Joe is a lot better. I would say i like them both about the same for different reasons.
Yeah I love both ippo and ashita no joe about the same but for different reasons as well. It would be interesting to see a remake. It would definitely draw in a new audience and hopefully skyrocket its popularity.
I remember first watching this series and being so worried about how Joe would act after his first big loss against Rikiishi and what happened after their fight that I had to put off watching the series for a month. I've never had a series affect me like that and that's when I knew it was my favorite anime of all time.
HONESTLY! When I saw the final scene of the anime, I legit couldn't believe what I saw. It really was a shock to the system, so I understand how you felt in this moment.
I watched this a year or so ago and it was the best thing ive ever watched it took me around 5 episodes to get used to the old animation after that it was amazing to watch, I wish it was more popular in the west
@@anihive8487 i struggled a bit through the first season because of the slow pacing similarly to you but when i hit the second season it was smooth sailing although i wish i skipped the last third of the first season since it gets retold later on but man the Mexican representation was next level 😂
I watched Ashita no Joe around 2 years ago. It became my favorite sports anime. Just finished the Slam Dunk anime recently. Similar main character in terms of loud, initial attitude. But Joe has better anime growth, mostly cause Slam Dunk wasn't fully adapted. Anyway, Midnight Blues is an absolute banger. So are the other OP, ED, and OST.
I also finished slam dunk around the time I finished this and both are great for different reasons, but I get you. Midnight blues is catchy and yeah I love the other openings, endings and the soundtrack in general is super good!
Bro, if you haven't read the rest of Slam Dunk, you should. The final game is arguably the best in the series and and it beautifully rounds out Sakuragi's character arc. Even if you've seen the movie, it's a must watch because the movie was more focused on Miyagi and omitted Sakuragi's development.

@@dad4378 It's actually my favorite track in all of the show. If you look at the pinned comment, I mention it there as the final audio credit, but yeah I didn't mention it. Sometimes things kinda slip through the cracks and I only remember it after it comes out.
What I love about the anime is the fact that joe goes against everything you'd expect from other animes. For example, he never got a happy story or ending his story is full of pain and strife and the show focus on the sacrifices and loss when It comes to boxing instead of the old follow your dreams and you'll live happily ever after.
Honestly. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it’s also your standard shounen. You’d think it would be aimed at a higher demographic, but it tells such a deep story for shonen. Crazy!!!
I know it's a standard for old anime to have better atmosphere becuase of the cell shading but my goodness and I a sucker for the choppy animation and color pallet. This isn't exclusive to this show but it's still beautiful.
Great Video, since you loved Joe you'll probably love the other works of the director Osamu Dezaki. They all have very similar styles and tones to them, and are equally underappreciated in the states.
@@anihive8487 I would personally recommend starting with his Black Jack OVAs, since there all standalone stories that don't require as much commitment as Joe did. There's also his Black Jack movie but that one is obviously a bit longer than the OVAs.
It makes me sad and pisses me off that rn, there's no official release for Ashita no Joe. Not even for the manga, even while Ashita no Joe is one the chronological first ever great anime original adapatations. My first, and favorite anime of all time, so dear to me that of fucking course I have biases on it, even with what I hate in it too, is and always will be Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. You fundementally ***cannot*** have Gurren Lagann without Ashita no Joe, since Gurren's production was started by two otaku passionate about making a mecha anime that felt like Joe.
Man... this is why companies like discotek are so great for the industry because they license things that have been in that licensing hell for a long time. If anything, go support them and maybe they'll do it. They, like a year or two ago, released hajime no ippo which was licensed by geneon in the 2000's but fell through and no one picked it up. They did, but only the first 75 the special and the ova, so I'm hoping for the rest. Hopefully in the future they also pick up ashita no joe because they DO have the movies licensed so... maybe....
@@anihive8487 I scanned their entire catalog on their website just now, they have the liscensing and release rights for not just Ashita no Joe through the recap movies, but also complete tv release sets for Captain Harlock, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo (specifically Armageddon too, among other releases!!!!!), the ***ORIGINAL*** Dororo, The Black Rock Shooter Anime!!!!!, ***AND!!!!!*** Most importantly to me, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, the first ever time anyone's ever seen a Kanada dragon. (Edit: The first Kanada Dragon was in Genma Taisen. Adieu 999 had a first important pop culture exposure which didn't happen with Genma, since in a lot of ways Genma Taisen was a proto Akira and the anime audience wasn't ready for that kind of story *yet*.)
So why does no one mentioned in these reviews how there's a 70 episode adaptation that has a really weird ending, but there's also a season two that picks up like 2/3 of the way through the 70 episode season that is of a much higher production quality.
Unsure. They probably thought that the 70 episode thing was gonna be it, so they just made an anime original ending. The second season was made 10 years later actually, so that’s probably the reason why it has a higher quality.
This manga/anime, Go Nagai's works, astro boy and the white lion are the only one true masterpiece of all time in japanese animation. Don't be deceived for the animation or the art, the writing is the best aof all.
Ashita No Joe is my 3rd favourite anime of all time. It didn't quite hit masterpiece status for me until Ashita No Joe 2 but man when that second season hits it hits hard. Ashita No Joe is probably the only anime that made me dislike the main character only for that to complete turn around and have me rooting for Joe with all my heart. The negatives for me was also the slower pace at least in the first season, the middle of season 2 has some low point moments for me with Joe's weight, and his fight with Harimau being another. And my last pet peeve for this show is the soundtrack in 2 its good and enjoyable but it is very repetitive to the point of parody. However despite those negatives the show has such great character development some of the best I have ever seen. It has some of the most memorable rivals of all time in Rikiishi, Carlos, and Mendoza. And best of all it has gut punching emotionable moments that I struggle to find replicated in other anime. Its due to these moments that even after 2 years since I have watched this show every so often I will think of Joe's journey, I will think of his struggles his lowest points and how he overcame them, I will think of Joe's passion for doing what he loved no matter the consequences. This show left an impression on my soul and I would highly recommend anyone to watch it.
I agree with you. The second season is when it really gets good, but the first season is still solid, but it’s SUPER slow. The harimau fight did suck tbh.

You can just skip to the second season after episode 54, but if you wanna watch the filler, which I did, it’s interesting to see a different take on what happens next. Kinda like an fma vs fma brotherhood type deal. Up to you.

I tried watching it a few weeks ago. It lost me when, in the span of 10-15 minutes, the coach went from. "I can't train you Joe" to "I can't coach the kids because I'm training Joe" back to "I'm not training you Joe" to "coaching kids" to "training Joe." Did I watch some weird edited movie of it?

So does Ashita no Joe 2 re-do only the last part of the first season or the whole season? Is there somewhere a list of the filler series that are safe to skip?
It redoes the last like 15 to 20 episodes or something. It’s like 55 onward or something is filler. They just condense it in the first 12 episodes of the second season. You could find a filler guide easily online too, but I’m pretty sure it’s 55 to the end of the first season is filler

Though I mostly liked the first season of Megalobox because of it's pacing and killer OST, so not sure how far along I'll get with Ashita no Joe. Sure, I've watched the entirety of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes once (which is also pretty slow-going and fairly old at this point) and loved it, but I had way more free time back then :^)

@@anihive8487 When we got it in the early 1980's , Joe Yabuki was felt as so reminiscent of Rocky Balboa and Rocky Marciano that he was renamed "Rocky Joe". Youngsters still love it, often persuaded by their parents. If you wanna get an idea of how epic this anime was, search "Rocky Joe sigla" (by Oliver Onions) for the original Italian song used for its opening and its end credits.
Oddio, non mi sembra così popolare rispetto ad altri anime come goldrake, jeeg, daitarn, mazinger (il grande), Lupin, Oscar, Heidi, Anna, Conan, Remì, Harlock, Ken o l'uomo tigre. Sicuramente non è passato inosservato ma le serie che ho menzionato mi sembrano molto più popolari

Well it's kind of old and the adaptation really does not hold up the second half is okay but really it deserves a proper adaptation. The soundtrack in particular is just utterly disgusting.
Sad… I love the soundtrack, but it is from the 70’s and 80’s, so not for everyone. I think the first 75 episodes are ok. They are pretty slow compared to the second half, but I personally think the adaptation holds up especially with the stylized style. It holds the test of time imo. Also, not a new adaptation, but they have a 4k upscale of the show which looks super nice, but it’s japanese only… Maybe one day they could remake it. It would spark new interest in the show especially in the states if they market properly. But anyway, different strokes for different folks I guess

It's also really cool to see Ashita no Joe references in tons of other anime/manga, especially the newer ones!
For example, this past season's very popular show Oshi no Ko. If I remember correctly, it has a "pure white ash" and death pose reference.
The show is fairly known here in Italy, even though most people call it "Rocky Joe". We're also lucky to have an excellent edition of the manga, and now the first series has just been released on blu ray

Ashita no joe is genuinely a masterpiece to me. Joe yabukis development to me actually shocked me because his emotional impact on me was amazing. From the soundtrack, to the visuals and dialogues, it was incredible. I cried twice watching this anime too. One, when carlos went punch drunk, and the conclusion of ashita no joe. Overrall, this is an amazing video ❤.

My friend's brother told me about this series and so I decided to watch it about a year back, ended up loving it so much. It was refreshing watching something that was grounded in reality and on a subject like boxing but with character driven drama. I was never into boxing before this , the only thing I've ever done fighting wise was martial arts aka Karate.
The characters don't act like anime characters in my opinion but more like real people, Joe is an amazing character same with Rikiishi and their relationship, Danpei too. All of the characters were great honestly. Loved the artwork and animation, its a product of its time and something you don't see anymore (thank the great Osamu Dezaki for season 2)
The music for both seasons is fantastic, I've always been a huge fan of 70's and 80's music (im a musician myself who plays keys and owns a lot of equipment from that time period like Rhodes Pianos and Synthesizers) alot of the tracks in season 1 can be haunting and season 2 has more 80's funky jazz and bossa nova genres.
In short the series deserves more recognition, despite it being about boxing its more character driven and really has that human feel. I wont spoil it for others but the ending of the second season i was almost about to cry at the end and this is coming from someone that doesn't get emotional very easily, that is how good it is.
I’m basically the same as you. This show is incredible and actually a couple episodes before the end actually made me tear up a bit more than the end itself.
@@anihive8487 It really hits you hard when it has characters you genuinely care about and real character development, the way its written is just so good.
There's a few Japanese fan groups who still talk and make fanart for the series. There's an artist I follow called Chihiro, they make Joe fanart and I even sent him a message showing him my Joe cosplay. He actually responded back to me in English saying hes happy the series is still loved over the world and that its not forgotten.
It's always excellent to see another person enjoying Ashita no Joe on earth. It seems you haven't read the manga, so I'll recommend you do that. The manga is absolutely incredible. The Art, especially in the fights, has more intensity than I've ever seen in any other manga. Not only that but based on some things you left out, I'd guess the manga goes more in-depth with the characters.
First off, I want to put out there that the Shiraki boxing gym was created specifically for Rikiishi Toru. That's an important distinction to make because it sets up Yoko taking ownership of the gym later in the series to indirectly "help" Joe. Going deeper into that, upon several rereads of the manga, Yoko stands out as one of the most interesting female characters in shounen or just manga in general. Go back and read some of her dialogue in the early Juvenile Detention Arc. She gets hyper-excited about the act of boxing itself, marveling at its brutality while also not having the stomach to see it through. This remains a theme in the entire manga as Yoko is a key piece in setting up the rivalry between Rikiishi and Joe but also acts as the force to try and ensure they don't fight later.
Yoko and Joe are, interestingly, two sides of the same coin. Both latch on to the brutality of boxing. The difference is what roles they take in the participation. Also, later on in the series, Yoko actively manipulates Joe into getting what she wants to see out of him while also believing she is doing what is best for him. It's a very interesting dynamic you wouldn't expect out of a series that came out in the late 60s. That a female character has so much going on is very cool. Not only that, she's portrayed as smarter and quicker-witted than her male contemporaries in the promotion side of things of boxing, while never understanding the "man's romance" of it until arguably the very end.
Also, I don't want to go too heavy into spoilers so I won't give my full thoughts on Rikiishi and Joe, but I will say it is the best rivalry in all of manga. Because, for the whole manga, Joe fights Rikiishi, even when he isn't. Every moment Joe "walks himself down into Hell" for the sake of boxing, he is stepping into Rikiishi's shoes. The first person, as stated by Joe, to ever truly see him as he truly was and accept him.
Anyway, I could go in way more on Joe himself or the plot but I'll leave it there. Ashita no Joe is a masterpiece and my second favorite manga behind Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. An odd combo there lol.
You should be the one writing these videos. Enjoyable to see this writeup but even more enjoyable because you’ve read YKK. Being someone whose favorite next to this and Hajime no Ippo is the aria series, YKK is recommended to me nonstop. I gotta get into that.
@@anihive8487 You should definitely give it a read. Recently, after years of hoping, the series finally got an omnibus in English. It doesn't cover the whole series, the first 3 volumes out of 14 I think, but it would be a good introduction.
Hitoshi Ashinano is my favorite mangaka and I could probably write a 15-page essay on everything that makes his work stand out compared to his peers. The beauty of his compositional layouts astounds me. Especially later on in the series when he really starts to come into his own as an author. It is an open-ended type of series where the peace in-between moments is the primary draw of the series.
After YKK, Ashinano would go on to improve and refine his personal brand of storytelling that relies far more on what I'd like to call the "negative space" of a narrative rather than what lies on the surface.
By his latest series, Kotonoba Drive, he has stopped using screen tones entirely and is using only really the bare essentials of line work, and yet his simplicity is something so divine to look at. I personally have redrawn more than a hundred of his panels in an effort to understand a little of his thought process but can never quite figure it out.
His works feel like a hazy kind of daydream you might experience while resting in the sun while listening to your favorite song.
A bit off-topic, but I always felt the musical style of Lamp and Hitoshi complement each other well. Funnily, the restaurant where the main character of Kotonoba Drive works is called "LAMP" and I was listening to Lamp while reading it. Lol, fun happenstance there.
Also, unsurprisingly, I have dabbled with the idea of making an essay-based TH-cam channel since I have this kind of anime/writing debate with my friends fairly often but never got around to it.

@@anihive8487 I've seen it. It's worth the watch. The cel animated episodes are very beautiful. It's the kind of anime they don't (actually can't) make anymore. The animators really understood what made the series pleasant.
I rewatch the last 3 episodes of Ashita no Joe every few months. It’s my favorite anime of all time, and it’s truly phenomenal how much Joe changes Jose in such a short time span.
I always viewed Jose as a mirror image of Joe, and I wanted Joe to become the champion and have his own family.
In the end though, there never really was a happy ending for Joe, it was either to stay the lone wolf he always was, or to die in pursuit of his passion.
I remember Joe.

I watched Saizens sub of AnJ up until the Rikishi fight and then AnJ2 back in 2014 when someone had subbed all the episodes on dailymotion. It took a long time but this anime is finally getting the credit it deserves.
Yeah it’s always been on my plan to watch since my friend of mine always talked about how it was his favorite sports show. I like sports and I had time, so I watched it and now it’s my favorite sports show!
I always thought Hajime No Ippo was a successor of Ashita No Joe, especially since Sendo is based on Joe.
I’m sure there are lots of ideas taken from ashita no joe, but yeah. It would be interesting to know them for sure!

Megalobox is a great love letter to Joe and the gear system is really cool but also still feels very grounded.
I do wonder if we are going to get a remake at some point. I also watched Joe recently because i watched hajime no ippo a while back and heard Joe is a lot better. I would say i like them both about the same for different reasons.
Yeah I love both ippo and ashita no joe about the same but for different reasons as well. It would be interesting to see a remake. It would definitely draw in a new audience and hopefully skyrocket its popularity.

I remember first watching this series and being so worried about how Joe would act after his first big loss against Rikiishi and what happened after their fight that I had to put off watching the series for a month. I've never had a series affect me like that and that's when I knew it was my favorite anime of all time.
HONESTLY! When I saw the final scene of the anime, I legit couldn't believe what I saw. It really was a shock to the system, so I understand how you felt in this moment.
I watched this a year or so ago and it was the best thing ive ever watched it took me around 5 episodes to get used to the old animation after that it was amazing to watch, I wish it was more popular in the west

@@anihive8487 i struggled a bit through the first season because of the slow pacing similarly to you but when i hit the second season it was smooth sailing although i wish i skipped the last third of the first season since it gets retold later on but man the Mexican representation was next level 😂

I watched Ashita no Joe around 2 years ago. It became my favorite sports anime.
Just finished the Slam Dunk anime recently. Similar main character in terms of loud, initial attitude.
But Joe has better anime growth, mostly cause Slam Dunk wasn't fully adapted.
Anyway, Midnight Blues is an absolute banger. So are the other OP, ED, and OST.
I also finished slam dunk around the time I finished this and both are great for different reasons, but I get you. Midnight blues is catchy and yeah I love the other openings, endings and the soundtrack in general is super good!
Bro, if you haven't read the rest of Slam Dunk, you should. The final game is arguably the best in the series and and it beautifully rounds out Sakuragi's character arc. Even if you've seen the movie, it's a must watch because the movie was more focused on Miyagi and omitted Sakuragi's development.

What I love about the anime is the fact that joe goes against everything you'd expect from other animes. For example, he never got a happy story or ending his story is full of pain and strife and the show focus on the sacrifices and loss when It comes to boxing instead of the old follow your dreams and you'll live happily ever after.
Honestly. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it’s also your standard shounen. You’d think it would be aimed at a higher demographic, but it tells such a deep story for shonen. Crazy!!!
I know it's a standard for old anime to have better atmosphere becuase of the cell shading but my goodness and I a sucker for the choppy animation and color pallet. This isn't exclusive to this show but it's still beautiful.
Great Video, since you loved Joe you'll probably love the other works of the director Osamu Dezaki. They all have very similar styles and tones to them, and are equally underappreciated in the states.

@@anihive8487 I would personally recommend starting with his Black Jack OVAs, since there all standalone stories that don't require as much commitment as Joe did. There's also his Black Jack movie but that one is obviously a bit longer than the OVAs.

It makes me sad and pisses me off that rn, there's no official release for Ashita no Joe. Not even for the manga, even while Ashita no Joe is one the chronological first ever great anime original adapatations.
My first, and favorite anime of all time, so dear to me that of fucking course I have biases on it, even with what I hate in it too, is and always will be Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
You fundementally ***cannot*** have Gurren Lagann without Ashita no Joe, since Gurren's production was started by two otaku passionate about making a mecha anime that felt like Joe.
Man... this is why companies like discotek are so great for the industry because they license things that have been in that licensing hell for a long time. If anything, go support them and maybe they'll do it. They, like a year or two ago, released hajime no ippo which was licensed by geneon in the 2000's but fell through and no one picked it up. They did, but only the first 75 the special and the ova, so I'm hoping for the rest. Hopefully in the future they also pick up ashita no joe because they DO have the movies licensed so... maybe....

(Edit: The first Kanada Dragon was in Genma Taisen. Adieu 999 had a first important pop culture exposure which didn't happen with Genma, since in a lot of ways Genma Taisen was a proto Akira and the anime audience wasn't ready for that kind of story *yet*.)

So why does no one mentioned in these reviews how there's a 70 episode adaptation that has a really weird ending, but there's also a season two that picks up like 2/3 of the way through the 70 episode season that is of a much higher production quality.
Unsure. They probably thought that the 70 episode thing was gonna be it, so they just made an anime original ending. The second season was made 10 years later actually, so that’s probably the reason why it has a higher quality.
I agree. No show is perfect, there are no 10/10 anime out there. It is simply impossible. Ashita no Joe comes close to me however.

This manga/anime, Go Nagai's works, astro boy and the white lion are the only one true masterpiece of all time in japanese animation. Don't be deceived for the animation or the art, the writing is the best aof all.

Ashita No Joe is my 3rd favourite anime of all time.
It didn't quite hit masterpiece status for me until Ashita No Joe 2 but man when that second season hits it hits hard. Ashita No Joe is probably the only anime that made me dislike the main character only for that to complete turn around and have me rooting for Joe with all my heart.
The negatives for me was also the slower pace at least in the first season, the middle of season 2 has some low point moments for me with Joe's weight, and his fight with Harimau being another. And my last pet peeve for this show is the soundtrack in 2 its good and enjoyable but it is very repetitive to the point of parody.
However despite those negatives the show has such great character development some of the best I have ever seen. It has some of the most memorable rivals of all time in Rikiishi, Carlos, and Mendoza. And best of all it has gut punching emotionable moments that I struggle to find replicated in other anime. Its due to these moments that even after 2 years since I have watched this show every so often I will think of Joe's journey, I will think of his struggles his lowest points and how he overcame them, I will think of Joe's passion for doing what he loved no matter the consequences. This show left an impression on my soul and I would highly recommend anyone to watch it.
I agree with you. The second season is when it really gets good, but the first season is still solid, but it’s SUPER slow. The harimau fight did suck tbh.

You can just skip to the second season after episode 54, but if you wanna watch the filler, which I did, it’s interesting to see a different take on what happens next. Kinda like an fma vs fma brotherhood type deal. Up to you.

I tried watching it a few weeks ago. It lost me when, in the span of 10-15 minutes, the coach went from. "I can't train you Joe" to "I can't coach the kids because I'm training Joe" back to "I'm not training you Joe" to "coaching kids" to "training Joe."
Did I watch some weird edited movie of it?
Ashita no Joe has an anime series and also a recap movie which cuts down the 70 or so episodes of the first season into 2.5 hrs so yeah.

It’s more of a spiritual successor with some similarities but then it becomes its own thing with the second season

Honestly whatever. It’s up to you but episodes 54 onward from the first season are retold with just the canon stuff in the next season. The first season stuff is canon but also not canon. It’s up to you. I watched both and it was fun watching the differences, but besides that, it can be hard watching the same part twice. Again, up to you!
Biggest problem for me is that I can't find good scans to read the manga and I would love to read it.

So does Ashita no Joe 2 re-do only the last part of the first season or the whole season? Is there somewhere a list of the filler series that are safe to skip?
It redoes the last like 15 to 20 episodes or something. It’s like 55 onward or something is filler. They just condense it in the first 12 episodes of the second season. You could find a filler guide easily online too, but I’m pretty sure it’s 55 to the end of the first season is filler
@@anihive8487 I see, thanks! I just re-watched the first season of Megalobox in 2 days and want more after I'm done with the second one. Though I mostly liked the first season of Megalobox because of it's pacing and killer OST, so not sure how far along I'll get with Ashita no Joe. Sure, I've watched the entirety of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes once (which is also pretty slow-going and fairly old at this point) and loved it, but I had way more free time back then :^)

@@anihive8487 When we got it in the early 1980's , Joe Yabuki was felt as so reminiscent of Rocky Balboa and Rocky Marciano that he was renamed "Rocky Joe".
Youngsters still love it, often persuaded by their parents.
If you wanna get an idea of how epic this anime was, search "Rocky Joe sigla" (by Oliver Onions) for the original Italian song used for its opening and its end credits.

Supposedly, they only have a dub for the first recap movie.
Aot has decent animation but the story is just Nazi's vs Zombies and the characters match that shallow vibe.
I feel like it starts like that, but as the series progresses, it gets deeper with the world building and the whole, it's not just the titans that are the problem type deal
I find it hard for me to continue watch the show.. I don't know., It's so sad, so dark.., can't handle it, I don't know maybe i just stick to watch some funny stupid anime.😂
It can be a tough watch since it just continues to spiral. If you’re not feeling it, you don’t have to force yourself through it. Enjoy the funny stuff!

I don’t believe so. It’s never been licensed in the states, so no dub would be produced. There might be dubs in other languages though. Not sure tho

Well it's kind of old and the adaptation really does not hold up the second half is okay but really it deserves a proper adaptation. The soundtrack in particular is just utterly disgusting.
Sad… I love the soundtrack, but it is from the 70’s and 80’s, so not for everyone. I think the first 75 episodes are ok. They are pretty slow compared to the second half, but I personally think the adaptation holds up especially with the stylized style. It holds the test of time imo. Also, not a new adaptation, but they have a 4k upscale of the show which looks super nice, but it’s japanese only… Maybe one day they could remake it. It would spark new interest in the show especially in the states if they market properly. But anyway, different strokes for different folks I guess
