- Starting with Magic is vital as it should be fully integrated into your entire world setting from the very begining. This is what to look for when creating a magic system...

Magic so often seems to be an afterthought in worldbuilding. Too often people will just take a generically medieval setting and just say that there's magic and wizards involved, while rarely considering the societal implications the very existence of magic in the world unless the discovery of magic is something quite recent in the setting (which isn't very common). What magic can do, how difficult it is to use/learn, and potentially even the stipulation of who is capable of using it are huge societal factors. It is, in a sense, the biggest fundamental difference (usually) between fantasy and reality.
Always appreciate the creativity of world building.
Items he's wearing: cloak of the Maguy, bracers of Ogre power, belt of the war mage, boots of cheetah speed LOL
I'm genuinely impressed with your background filter. I barely ever saw it flicker
Great production
Really good primer, looking forward to the live class in a few minutes.
Great advice as always. Thank you for what you do for us.
Love the new set!
Yay, a new series from Guy!
Oh boy, now that this is out, I'll need to speed through the previous campaign building series 😅
First and most important: Thanks you! I love world building! Can't wait for next episode.
Now few things I noticed and only thing I can criticize :-D
1) When you talk about inconsistency and "things suddenly changing" and you have new fancy background... I just expected something to happen, I had to watch it twice to be sure :D
2) Is the background distracting or I am just too tired? Probably the latter
3) speaking about background, hehm:
a) The lowest flask is levitating above stairs?
b) The carpet is running under the stairs?
c) The tree roots - either they are growing ON the stairs, in that case that is not how roots look like. Or the roots are through the stairs (stairs build around) and this is not what you would do. This tight fit would probably soon break your stairs because of new growth, imho.
The last point is crazy, huh? Well never mind. Thanks for another great episode :)
Oh yeah and one last thing (another good one :D) - Is it just me or you should add more to your costume below belt? Upper part of the body is so rich and colorful and bottom is boring and it feels imbalanced. Maybe at least a pouch and dagger?
Good night from the crazy person :)
I love ALL the DM Lair videos!!!! ❤
i like those series already. i always struggled with understanding magic; even when creating characters it's hard for me to understand ( and therefore roleplay ) any details about such powers
Thanks for the prompt! Made me think 'Huh, how *does* the magic work in the fantasy story I'm writing' lol
I think it's fine if you have to learn magic and if there was a first individual to discover it. Even fundamental forces have to be studied to be accessed, like electricity, magnetism, solar power etc.
Historically some people believed that religiously pure people could compel demons to do things for them. There was on priest who had a demon take him to the most beautiful woman in the world...after which he was unable to return until he had ritualy purified himself for a few weeks. I also learned that that some of the things people wanted magic FOR were the typical sex, money, and power, but also to cram in all the information they were supposed to have been studying all semester, and to make the neighbor's dog SHUT UP.
What is the difference between
Clan tribe Nation Country Empire State city City-state Nation-state kingdom and how they are interconnected
I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND
Or we can just call it magic and be done with it. Need I mention Midichlorians?
Oh what happened to the other video?
Never mind, dum moment
Maybe people have an inherent sense of magic, but it is weak and unrefined. People mostly sense when something is ''off''. But at some point someone ingested some herbs or mushrooms that disrupted the way in which we feel the magic currents in an area.
This disruption makes the magic obvious in a way that the person normally doesn't experience. With this new awareness they can meditate and hone their sense, with practice they learn to truly sense the magical currents around themselves and within themselves.
With some effort they learn to move the magic within themselves, and just like how one magnet can move another they learn to move the magic outside themselves by its sympathetic reaction to the currents within the body.
Step by step they learn to manipulate the magic in the environment into producing various effects to ever greater degrees.
