People get too wrapped up in how "accurate" the data is from these cheaper analyzers. What they should be focusing on is how "consistent" the data is. The numbers are relative. If it's giving you a consistent data set then you can still see trends and improve your game. If you are looking to be a professional coach or set up a home simulator then of course you aren't going to rely on a $600 piece of equipment lol. If you are looking to improve your game, I think any of these launch monitors that fall in the $500-$600 range are great.

The only reason I want to buy one is to dial in my wedge distances. So the accuracy of the carry is extremely important. If it is consistently giving me inaccurate carry data I’m not sure how that is beneficial…

I love mine, not for the accuracy, which I know it doesn't have, but for the sheer fun of playing the Home Tee Hero simulator. Even if it constantly tags every shot at 1-2 clubs shorter, it's a blast to stand in the range with mates and play a virtual round. And that, as practice, is so much fun. Worth every penny

I love my R10. I set it up in my garage for night time and winter practice. I spent some time to really line it up & level it with my hitting mat and I’m very impressed for the money I spent. I find it works better with the E6 software included. The results are closer to reality. I’ve had it for 6 months now and love it for both practice and entertainment.

  • @SportCardOz

I’ve had mine for 7 months and love it. I already had a net for the backyard so this is a great practice add on. In Feb/Mar we had 6 weeks of torrential rain and no golf could be played. I took a promo deal on E6 and played courses all over the world twice a week in my garage! Even now our range is closed from the flooding so with the R10 I can still practice at home. It’s a commonly known issue that spin rates are off but I find distance and ball speed to be pretty accurate and have put it next to a Foresight X3 (radar) and its close on most metrics I am worried about.

First, Mark, thanks for all the videos. You are one of the few with a good understanding of different sources of variation and this makes you one of the most thoughtful and reliable reviewers. I'm a retired statistician, so the acknowledgement of uncertainty and dispersion in making reviews is important to me and should be important to everyone.
I've had the R10 for around six months and kept it up to date with software updates. I already have the G80 and have previously tried iphone launch monitors such as shot vision. I bought the R10 for data on club angle, launch angle, spin, etc, to help me on the range. I've tested both also compared to a Trackman with the help of my coach.
My experience is that the R10 doesn't offer anything much useful beyond the G80 or an iphone launch monitor. All deliver reasonable numbers on distance, ball speed, and club speed. Using your eyes too, this is pretty much most of what you need for assessing quality of strike. I found that the extra stats offered by the R10 were just too untrustworthy to be of any use, so if you are wanting to work on issues such as club face at impact, the R10 isn't reliably helpful. Actually, on the range the G80 is more reliable on distance for range balls for obvious reasons.
Another difficulty with the R10 is that presently the data export facilities are extremely limited. Ideally one wants to download session data in order to explore patterns, but this is very difficult (so clunky that I don't bother) at present. I imagine Garmin will eventually upgrade its data export software and this will make the R10 much more useful.
As such, the real question is whether the R10 is worth having in comparison to a far cheaper launch monitor. My judgement is that the extra data offered isn't reliably worthwhile.
I do acknowledge that the R10 can be set up to sim golf courses and lots of people with home nets enjoy these extras. But if you are just using it at the range to help improve your game, I fear you will be disappointed.

  • @GolfTechstudio
    @GolfTechstudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

My mate has one and we’ve compared it to my Quad. It’s decent on ball stats. He’s built a garden gazebo and the R10 comes with a basic E6 subscription. He’s been able to setup a home sim for around £1500 plus some donkey work. I wouldn’t have thought this possible a couple of years ago. Sim golf is a growing market and the R10 is great for entry level with a view to upgrading as finances allow. No putting unfortunately.
His long game has improved on the course because he’s hitting balls and can react to a ball flight he doesn’t like. With his coaching he can feel when he’s moving back to his patterns and correct them at home.

I'm delighted with mine. I was also considering a Mevo+ but for the money the Garmin won out. I understand its limitations, especially when I'm trying to improve club-path and face-to-path, but I've been out in my garden every day. Also, I've already teed the boys up for golf nights on the Home Tee Hero simulator when the nights draw in.

Got my R10 two days ago and have so far only tried it one range session. But it sure did it more enjoyable, and instead of hitting shot after shot going here and there with nothing but my memory as to have I have done, I get the numbers saved. For someone who can't afford a better launch monitor at the time, I'm happy I got it, and I think you got a point about that it will make me practice more. I've never been a fan practice short game shots like those you did at the end, but I think with the R10 I look forward to trying it out, especially since the distance seemed to be pretty accurate there.
I look forward to getting to know it better, and make use of the information that is most accurate. I also look forward to playing a digital course with it on the range. Didn't think too much about that part before I bought it, but I'm curious to try that.

Hi Mark, love your videos and your review. Need to point out though that the R10 does NOT actually track the flight of the ball beyond a few feet from contact... the rest is all algorithms and calculations so wind and other environmental factors are all irrelevant to the results that the R10 provides. For the average recreational golfer it's a decent unit to have fun with, but consideration needs to be given to the fact that the majority of data provided is "Calculated" and "Not Measured". With launch monitors, the more you pay, the more actual measured data you get. Keep the videos coming!!

    • @richardgoodfellow8107

    • @MrSimpsonia
      @MrSimpsonia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@richardgoodfellow8107 It can read spin on outdoor shots with extended ball flight. The problem is that it requires a firmware update, which Mark likely didn't do since he just pulled it out of the box and charged. The firmware updates since launch have really improved the device leaps and bounds. Honestly, a number of the misreads in the video probably would have been closer had it been updated.

I don’t understand the point? GC quad and other image based launch monitors work exactly the same, using a different technical approach. They just read the initial flight and then calculate the rest. No one would say that QC quad is flawed, it’s just an approach. It’s really about the data it can generate being accurate, NOT how it generates the data per-say.

I’ve loved my R10 so far and bang for buck it’s great. Never expected perfection or even close to. My reason for getting it was I can practice every day in the garden for 45 minutes to an hour. Rather than once a week at the range where it’s a tenner a bucket! A net for £100, R10 for £500. That’s 2 months in the garden every day or 60 range sessions over a year and a bit. I find my Garmin r10 is accurate, have a driving range marked out for distance with range finder and carry matches up. Club speed and ball speed match the other simulators I’ve used. A better comparison would be with trackman, radar vs radar. Lighting conditions don’t make a difference with radar. Spin rate is calculated and is ok with a large sample size. I was fighting a hook last season with my irons, with the garmin r10 I was able to correct. Actual on course flight straight now and fades are possible.

Occasionally you can snap one up for less than £1500 and well worth it for the extra data you get. You can buy a stand to assist in line up. Also people add a metal spot (or small piece of metallic insulating tape) to improve accuracy.

I don’t care about any data as a beginner, all I want to know is does it accurately say if ball is going strait and distance within 10% for home practise with a net? Does it accurately detect miss hits and slices?

well the carry by the radar
maybe correct in the heavy atmosphere and your gc quad only sees around impact and then uses calculations. If you measured manually the total distance you could then see how the numbers stack up! Does garmin say how far it tracks before losing the ball flight
I use trackman all the time and it throws up some weird rogue numbers occasionally.

    Great stuff guys.
What's your take using it on the range? Using range balls?
And using the indoor features, i.e. the home tee & E6?
I can see it being really useful with gapping your clubs, perhaps that hybrid can be replaced by a 7-wood, or do I need a 48-52-56-60 wedges, or 50-54-58, etc.
Mine just came in today, see.
So, I've got a few sessions planned at the range these next few weeks.

Not an issue. Radar waves penetrate plastics quite easily, think of the nose cone on an airplane which protects the radar equipment.

Think Garmin doesn’t track whole flight but first 30 or so yards like mevo plus or Flightscope on long outdoor. Hence it wouldn’t pick up wind on first drive Mark, though unlike indoor should have detected the gearing from toe strike

I'm sure the radar isn't going to track the ball for the whole flight....probably just the first 20 or 30 yards and then start calculating numbers. Does the Quad account for wind?

Its fairly easy to tell if you have the r10 lined up left or right after a few shots. Lined up well i find it does a darn good job. I even find the yardages mostly consistent. Lots of numbers are calculated just like trackman. Great practice tool, if you understand how to use it to your advantage. Nice to pair it with a laser.

Does the r10 use metallic dots like flightscope mevo? It looks similar in data in about every other shot looks pretty close. Mevo is useless on data undotted when you get over 110 swing speed

great review.....thanks. One of the metrics I am looking to fix w a launch monitor is Angle of Attack w Driver....curently and after 2 lessons, I average -5*.....not good. I am looking to buy a home launch monitor to measure this accurately and am wondering if u feel the R10 does this? I see the huge discrepancies re spin rates on most clubs w the R10 but am not sure if that is as criticl a metric for me? Also-are there other home launch monitors u would recommend other than the R10? Thanks.....love ur vids and always learn and laugh lots!

I have one of the earlier Swing Caddie radar-based launch monitors. It works okay, but once the novelty wears off, it just sits on the shelf. I also got upset me when it told me my 7i carry was only 140 yards instead of the 150 yards I thought it carried!! LOL
I think its best use case might be practicing different length pitch shots into a net.

  • @stevec8381

Used one for a month, around 5 range sessions with 100 balls each time.
I got a total of 100 to 150 shots that I could record data on.
I get more data and am better at telling how my shots play by looking at the range target info, and where the ball ended up or flew.
Sold mine and made a couple of quid on eBay, waiting now for a better budget iPhone based system in the next wee while.
