I find the AF 35-135mm f3.5-4.5 to be a similar, put it on and shoot lens, I probably use it more at 35mm, the flexibility of additional reach is important. I had surprisingly good shooting experience with the 35mm f1.4 on the street, but not shooting from the hip. I use the AIS 28mm f2, or Leica-R 28mm f2.8, or SMC Takumar 24mm f3.5, Arsat 20mm f2.8 for zone focusing and shooting from the hip.

The 35-135 is a good lens and I can train myself not to need a longer focal length than 135mm. I can imagine zone focusing with a 35 f/1.4 would be very difficult at wider apertures. Thanks for the comments.

From a teen in the 80s I thought all lenses zoomed.. lol😮.. but then I just figured out what a leap year was. You must have had some hot sakei after the first roll cause that 2nd roll was amazing. Nailed every shot and the color seemed more like portra film. enjoyed that. Cheers 🍌

Yes, I definitely found my groove once I'd run the Takeshita Street gauntlet and found myself exploring the backstreets back to Shibuya. Much more relaxing and it gave me a chance to be a bit more deliberate in the photography.

I usually shoot 35mm film with a fast prime on my Spotmatic, but I also have a plastic Canon EOS Rebel G film SLR with a plastic 35-80mm f/4-5.6 kit lens that are small, light as a feather and take great photos. Auto-focus and auto-exposure make it hard to miss a shot. I think the 35-200mm zoom range is too ambitious for film photography today. Too heavy and too much work. If I want a zoom I think the more modest 35-80mm is a zoom range that makes more sense. Small and plastic are a bonus. The plastic Canon kit looks and feels like a modern DSLR and lacks the cachet of my Spotmatic, but if your goal is to shoot 35mm film walking around with a zoom lens it's hard to beat.

I think you have a point, Matthew. If I'm going light, I have a Nikon F55 with plastic 28-80mm lens that does everything without me thinking - but I miss the challenge as much as the hipster cred.

Focussing at 0.86 feet .... does that qualify as a mixed metaphor ?
I thought the Minolta 7000 was the first autofocus SLR ?
17 elements, that's got to be a record. I can imagine the design engineer thinking I've got a job for life here, there's no way we'll ever perfect the lens. Guess they were right, but perfection is the enemy of the good; which is what makes Superman so boring.
Favourite shot was the boat model behind the frosted glass window.

I should have qualified, 'Nikon's first autofocus SLR', though the Nikon 35AF came before it. Glad you liked the boat. I think most people would have taken a photo of the sports car.

@@patternsinsand I used to work on a historic tall ship. It made a great chat up line down at the docks. A lot of rich guys were doing the 'Would you like to come and see my yacht'. I'd say 'Would you like to come and see my Galleon ?'
