I went the AAS and Bachelors route in Network Management but now I am currently studying for my CCNA. Definitely interesting video and insightful/inspirational. I need to certify! FYI to all here: Once you pass Sec+, start preparing IMMEDIATELY for CySA+. A lot of the same material is covered and if you do well on Sec+, you'll probably do well on CySA+

Great video!! It really helps me to see other's experience so i can learn from them. I studied for 3 weeks, every day after work, all day on the weekend, sometimes waking up at 5AM to start. I have no IT background, but would like to get into the IT field. I took my test today and passed on the first try!!!! Like you, i thought i failed for sure, it was pretty hard for me. I self learned with the same book and Prof Messer's video. I def. squeaked by, but passing is passing!!! =)

@@thaomaetzold9879 yes, it's really good. I would also recommend setting up a lab with AD, DNS, DHCP and a couple of virtual machines that you will join to your domain. If you can get a trial of O365, this will prepare you for real world
Took and passed today. Spent 2-3 weeks prepping. I'm an old fart who hasn't taken a cert since 1998 and had never taken a CompTIA exam. I have to say I was very disappointed in the experience. I, like you, read the Darril Gibson book after abandoning the All In One book after chapter 6. I dabbled a little in the Mike Meyers Udemy class and prep tests. I dabbled with the Dion tests on Udemy. I read the book once and skimmed it a second time after taking practice tests and pinpointing areas I was weak. I took the post assessment exam in the Gibson book this AM and passed with a 90%. So I took the exam at 11:30. What a god-awful exam experience. I took at home, so I had to download their app and then take pics with my cell phone. This caused me to be late for the start of the exam, so I was flustered from the start. I skipped the performance based questions as everyone says to do. I was SO bummed about the questions. I had hoped for straightforward questions and a smattering of trick questions, but it was almost all trick questions, lengthy questions, and a rare straightforward question. I KNEW I failed early on. i was marking almost half for review. Important to make a guess before moving on because I ran out of time in the performance questions and never got to review. I finished the 81 questions with about 15 minutes to go back to performance questions. They weren't so bad, but there is a lot to read and absorb so you can get to doing it. In the end I didn't get to maybe the last one or two and then time was called and I knew I was toast. Filling out the survey was the longest two minutes of my life. I was thinking 1. I just lost $300. and 2. I don't know how I will study or when I will retake the exam because I have no way of knowing what to do or study because there were things asked that I had never heard of in any of my studying. I was REALLY bummed out. I grimaced when the results came up because I knew it wasn't going to be pretty, but it turns out I got over 800. I felt terrible. It wasn't a nice feeling of accomplishment or vindication. It was the feeling that somehow I squeaked by. Very unsatisfying for the level of focus I had. But it's a pass. Not looking forward to any other testing with them.
Thao Maetzold you can do it. Just know how they design the tests-to make you feel like you’re failing. I personally thinks it’s a horrible system, but just know that going in and control your panic when you start to feel unsure.

@@deadlytrix86 MY #1 advice is simply prepare and take all the free tests you can online. Jamie Dion on Udemy has some good tests. Try the following link. I loved that the questions were good and made sure I knew the information. You can also drill into subject areas as well. It is wonderful. And free. But note Comptia questions are not like this. They will ask you questions that you need to know the info in order to do the question. Like what ACL rule would block all web traffic. But RULE #1 is don't sweat it. Be confident. No matter how doomed you feel, push on and answer EVERYTHING before moving on because you may not have time to come back. Everyone says skip PBQs and come back to them and yes, do that, but on the multiple choice do answer all as you go. I ran out of time. But have confidence and expect to feel like you're failing. In their instructions they even say some questions are psychometric--I think that means "intended to f_ck with your head"...
This was a very useful video, I sat the Fundamentals, A+, Network+, Security+ in 3 months passing all the first time. Sec+ definitely the one I studied hardest for. Trying to squeeze in CCNA before Christmas.

Some advice to anyone studying for it. I failed the security+ twice and decided to buy the get certified get ahead book and passed. The book really explains things quite well.
I read Gibson's books but i'm failing miserably on Dion's practice tests on Udemy. Did you have previous IT experience? I don't have any. Did you take any practice exams?

Darril Gibson is one of the best classroom instructors that I have ever been taught by. I attended a 10 month in classroom Microsoft Windows Server Course which included CompTIA Security+, Darril Gibson was my instructor and with only 2 weeks of classroom instruction and practice exams I passed the Security+ exam easily and with a high score of 986. I would recommend Darril's Study Guides to anyone looking to pass the Security+ exam on their first attempt.

My experience/journey in IT so far is shockingly similar! Went from building PCs to help desk in 2014 > team lead/level 2 > SCCM admin (current) > now starting to study for Sec+.

I just passed my exam today after two years in IT security. It really helps getting an entry level job in the field I could understand the terms much more while I was studying. Even though I work in the field the test was not easy at all and I have Microsoft certs and an A+ cert from 2009. I took about 6 weeks to study and I would study after work and in my down time at work, the train, and the last week I studied all day just like you did. I was so nervous taking it and thought I failed but I passed!! So on to my CEH and possibility OSCP. Professor Messer was great for me loaded the videos on my fire-stick and took notes as I watched along with flashcards, and other books.
I don't think if I worked next to you I'd be able to focus on my own work. My heart would prob come out of my chest. Thank you for the information video. I've been watching Professor Messors videos as well. That has helped me to pass the Core 1 A+, now working on Core 2 A+. I would like to get as far as Security but we'll see. Thank Caitlin.
Congrats on Sec+, CompTIA also has two intermediate certs called CySA+ PenTest+ and the highest level CASP+. CISSP from ISC2 is also one of the most recognized and definitely worth getting for the field. If you're working with SIEMs then CySA+ is a good one to go for next. If you're going for upper management towards a CISO position definitely need either CASP+, CISSP and CISM. I'm personally in a cyber security bootcamp called SecureSet.
@@phabeondominguez5971 Depends if the industry you are working in uses all Cisco networking equipment, which is a lot. Not all of them, but a lot. Enterprise shit is always windows, hypervisor VMWare, Cisco switches. The most annoying part of Cisco is having to use their proprietary operation system where you have to go up and down levels in order to do different stuff. Why can't they just put BSD on it like everyone else, oh right the NSA plants would be easier to spot if you had the power of BSD.
Just coming back to this video to say I started studying right after New Year's and passed the test on January 17th! Darril Gibson's book is amazing and I read some of the Sybex book for review. Jason Dion's udemy exams (the 6 exams not the full course) helped a ton. I passed with an 812 with no prior security experience.

@@theutubeman1 I didnt really use the labs from the book. I used a couple, but I read the book like 3 times and used certmaster from comptia and watched IT pro TV. Those are three things that I used to pass the exam.
Im doing my CCNA. I think its important to know the fundamentals of how a network works before digging into security. I highly recommend doing cisco certs. Cisco is the next level up from comptia.
Good to see you found your Passion and Path, instead of that Degree course or whatever it was ,in programming , or whatever it was. That's the important lesson here.

Folks, if you don't have prior experience forget about trying to pass in under 2 or 3 weeks. Take your time, understand the technology, that's key if you are aiming for an infosec job.

Any advice? I read Gibson's book, looked at Messer videos but I'm failing badly on Dion's practice tests over on Udemy. I'm having trouble understanding what the questions are asking because they word them so weird.
I did a 2 week crash course study and failed my first exam (730), lol. Took another 3 days to study after that failure and happy to say I got over that hurdle. I watched this video cause I felt overwhelmed and lost with the amount of content and you put me at ease along with a few others words of good faith. Thanx a million.

I take mine on Tuesday and studied for 5 to 6 months as well. I skipped Network+, am currently job hunting, and honestly can't afford to pay for 'instant' retake at the moment. Hate to say that lmfao.

I too have a similar background as you with building the gaming systems, I worked in the Tech Move department at MS tearing down offices and labs and resetting them, then I was doing in home pc repairs for a while. Hi, home security should be very basic, most protection can come from a good router, firewalls at home are overkill unless you have a business at home. VPN's masks your IP and what you do.
There are lots of things you can do. Some routers allow you to "whitelist" all the devices you use on it and deny everyone else. Password must be 12 characters, alphanumeric, upper and lower case. Some VPN's have built in malware detection so that might be something that interests you. Plus it protects your logins from being sniffed. Firewalls are complicated, I only use the one on my computer and router because you could end up blocking things you need because the firewall is too strict, the router will limit the amount of open ports to just what you need, on a lighter firewall. Some more expensive routers have an IDS, Intrusion Detection System. It will give you a list of people's ip's who have triggered the system which has rules set by you or an expert, such as drop all ICMP requests is the most basic. As far as Anti-Virus, most modern Malware circumvent Anti-Virus. I'm actually reading a book that explains how to code that in. Lastly, make sure the router you get can do ghost AP, where it doesn't broadcast and no one can see it when they walk by, they would need to know the exact name to join the network and also the password.

Nice, I think most companies will pay for the certifications as long as it adds value to your position in the company. Im not sure what tools you guys use at your work, but you might want to look into learning Splunk. The cert pays VERY well ;)
A lot of thes videos are from people who have an extensive IT background so they will obviously have an easier time passing the exams. What about someone who has never even worked in IT before?
I am in the same spot, I am not techy and been asked by my job to take the test they have paid for a class but I am on day 3 (wed in the week) and been told that I should take it on Friday (day 5). I have no clue what they are even talking about and guess on some of the test sites they provide but its guessing - not even getting 30/122 questions right.
I have very little background in IT. I had to pass this test for a job in 60 days. I passed in 45. But I also was given a chance to study while on the job as well, which everyone don’t have that luxury. I was clueless about the information when I started studying. I went through Professor Messer videos a total of three times. First time I took notes, second and third time I referenced my notes and just watched the videos. I also read the Exam Cram Security+ book and it help with covering things Professor Messer didn’t cover in much detail. It also went in depth explaining a lot of things! Make sure to print out the exam objectives and check off everything on the list to assure you’ve covered everything. I also used passcomptia.com, and www.examcompass.com/comptia/security-plus-certification/free-security-plus-practice-tests for practice tests. While taking the test I thought I failed. This seems to be a common feeling from everyone I know that has passed it. Take practice exams, quizzes, and tests frequently to test where you are and to get a hang of the questions. A lot of the questions are worded funny and you will have to re-read some of them several times.
I got my security+ in two and a half weeks of studying before I got my first job in IT. You don’t have to have crazy experience. Just buy a sec+ book and sit down for an hour or two each night and study.

My mind starts off on its own path when I watch training videos or am in classrooms unless the presentation is fast paced and engaging. Also when you described your reactions to the first questions. I bought the GCGA book and I plowed through 535 pages in a single week. Got 77% correct on the practice and exam on the first attempt. My exam is tomorrow and today is review day. Wish me luck!

Darril Gibson is one of the best classroom instructors that I have ever been taught by. I attended a 10 month in classroom Microsoft Windows Server Course which included CompTIA Security+, Darril Gibson was my instructor and with only 2 weeks of classroom instruction and practice exams I passed the Security+ exam easily and with a high score of 986. I would recommend Darril's Study Guides to anyone looking to pass the Security+ exam on their first attempt.

I just passed my exam today after two years in IT security. It really helps getting an entry level job in the field I could understand the terms much more while I was studying. Even though I work in the field the test was not easy at all and I have Microsoft certs and an A+ cert from 2009. I took about 6 weeks to study and I would study after work and in my down time at work, the train, and the last week I studied all day just like you did. I was so nervous taking it and thought I failed but I passed!! So on to my CEH and possibility OSCP. Professor Messer was great for me loaded the videos on my fire-stick and took notes as I watched along with flashcards, and other books.

Congrats on Sec+, CompTIA also has two intermediate certs called CySA+ PenTest+ and the highest level CASP+. CISSP from ISC2 is also one of the most recognized and definitely worth getting for the field. If you're working with SIEMs then CySA+ is a good one to go for next. If you're going for upper management towards a CISO position definitely need either CASP+, CISSP and CISM. I'm personally in a cyber security bootcamp called SecureSet.

@@phabeondominguez5971 Depends if the industry you are working in uses all Cisco networking equipment, which is a lot. Not all of them, but a lot. Enterprise shit is always windows, hypervisor VMWare, Cisco switches. The most annoying part of Cisco is having to use their proprietary operation system where you have to go up and down levels in order to do different stuff. Why can't they just put BSD on it like everyone else, oh right the NSA plants would be easier to spot if you had the power of BSD.

Just coming back to this video to say I started studying right after New Year's and passed the test on January 17th! Darril Gibson's book is amazing and I read some of the Sybex book for review. Jason Dion's udemy exams (the 6 exams not the full course) helped a ton. I passed with an 812 with no prior security experience.

@@theutubeman1 I didnt really use the labs from the book. I used a couple, but I read the book like 3 times and used certmaster from comptia and watched IT pro TV. Those are three things that I used to pass the exam.
Im doing my CCNA. I think its important to know the fundamentals of how a network works before digging into security. I highly recommend doing cisco certs. Cisco is the next level up from comptia.
Good to see you found your Passion and Path, instead of that Degree course or whatever it was ,in programming , or whatever it was. That's the important lesson here.

Folks, if you don't have prior experience forget about trying to pass in under 2 or 3 weeks. Take your time, understand the technology, that's key if you are aiming for an infosec job.

I take mine on Tuesday and studied for 5 to 6 months as well. I skipped Network+, am currently job hunting, and honestly can't afford to pay for 'instant' retake at the moment. Hate to say that lmfao.

Caitlin Thanks for your perspective, and like many of your followers it is great that the poster shows personality. I too have a similar background as you with building the gaming systems, I worked in the Tech Move department at MS tearing down offices and labs and resetting them, then I was doing in home pc repairs for a while. I just completed my MSIM IT and Project Management but as you well know these certs are often more important than the actual degree. Thanks for the advice and info, wish me luck.

I was wondering if you could do a video on the basics of home computer safety. The importance of AV, firewalls, vpns, etc...
Hi, home security should be very basic, most protection can come from a good router, firewalls at home are overkill unless you have a business at home. VPN's masks your IP and what you do.
There are lots of things you can do. Some routers allow you to "whitelist" all the devices you use on it and deny everyone else. Password must be 12 characters, alphanumeric, upper and lower case. Some VPN's have built in malware detection so that might be something that interests you. Plus it protects your logins from being sniffed. Firewalls are complicated, I only use the one on my computer and router because you could end up blocking things you need because the firewall is too strict, the router will limit the amount of open ports to just what you need, on a lighter firewall. Some more expensive routers have an IDS, Intrusion Detection System. It will give you a list of people's ip's who have triggered the system which has rules set by you or an expert, such as drop all ICMP requests is the most basic. As far as Anti-Virus, most modern Malware circumvent Anti-Virus. I'm actually reading a book that explains how to code that in. Lastly, make sure the router you get can do ghost AP, where it doesn't broadcast and no one can see it when they walk by, they would need to know the exact name to join the network and also the password.

Nice, I think most companies will pay for the certifications as long as it adds value to your position in the company. Im not sure what tools you guys use at your work, but you might want to look into learning Splunk. The cert pays VERY well ;)

A lot of thes videos are from people who have an extensive IT background so they will obviously have an easier time passing the exams. What about someone who has never even worked in IT before?
I am in the same spot, I am not techy and been asked by my job to take the test they have paid for a class but I am on day 3 (wed in the week) and been told that I should take it on Friday (day 5). I have no clue what they are even talking about and guess on some of the test sites they provide but its guessing - not even getting 30/122 questions right.
I have very little background in IT. I had to pass this test for a job in 60 days. I passed in 45. But I also was given a chance to study while on the job as well, which everyone don’t have that luxury. I was clueless about the information when I started studying. I went through Professor Messer videos a total of three times. First time I took notes, second and third time I referenced my notes and just watched the videos. I also read the Exam Cram Security+ book and it help with covering things Professor Messer didn’t cover in much detail. It also went in depth explaining a lot of things! Make sure to print out the exam objectives and check off everything on the list to assure you’ve covered everything. I also used passcomptia.com, and www.examcompass.com/comptia/security-plus-certification/free-security-plus-practice-tests for practice tests. While taking the test I thought I failed. This seems to be a common feeling from everyone I know that has passed it. Take practice exams, quizzes, and tests frequently to test where you are and to get a hang of the questions. A lot of the questions are worded funny and you will have to re-read some of them several times.
I got my security+ in two and a half weeks of studying before I got my first job in IT. You don’t have to have crazy experience. Just buy a sec+ book and sit down for an hour or two each night and study.

My mind starts off on its own path when I watch training videos or am in classrooms unless the presentation is fast paced and engaging. Also when you described your reactions to the first questions. I bought the GCGA book and I plowed through 535 pages in a single week. Got 77% correct on the practice and exam on the first attempt. My exam is tomorrow and today is review day. Wish me luck!
