6:58 this might be my favorite forehand ever struck. down match point. Huge windup, insane racket head velocity, and then the transition into the warcry, its just beautiful haha.
In terms of Tennis, it doesn't get much better than the comeback against Nishikori, the screams leading up the that final winner is just amazing. And the crowd just going crazy. Chills.
@@blazeking5206 Dude watch again the end of that match in Montreal against Nishikori... he doesn't ordinarily give up, he's not like Tsonga who is really lacking mental strength His real problems are his endurance and his consistency through tournaments
If only he'd hit every shot with half the intensity he hits his big finishing forehand or backhand. But it's Monfils ! We must be glad some players value making the show more than winning at all costs !
He was #6 IN THE WORLD. Since then he fell out of the top 20 and then fought back to #11 at the age of 34. Once you reach the top 10 in the world at anything I don't think you can criticize his winning ability. You don't get to that point without that belief inside of you. Paul maïga It’s a reliable backhand, but he barely uses its potential. He likes to just dump it in the middle of the court and let the opponent attack.
I saw him play in Rotterdam this year and last. He's like a spider, and the base line is his web. Guys just can't hit through him, he's the king of court coverage. And look how far back he stands for return! In person it's unbelievable. The courts I play at don't even extend that far back
He was playing very well indeed until the ATP tour was stood down. If anything, he has found peace with Svitolina. His physique is great. Love the way he moves around the court. He was unfortunate to have had a lot of injuries. Great player and great guy !
man these plays and the match itself, against Nishikori was so freaking epic (Montreal, 5:32).. omg, he just passed all the limits, totally god mode! its just absurd the kind of quality and importance, at the same time, of the points he played.. he was 3-5 at 3rd set, Nishi serving for the match, 30-all, he just rips 2 insane winners!!!! and then breaks, confirms, and the drama just continues when Nishikori now has 3 match points man, in the tie break!!!!!!!!!!! no mistake, just 3 insane shots again.. he was something else that day
Lack of strenght due to the lack of hard training due to lack of envy and rage due to lack of champion state of mind. Lack of mental capacities to be able to keep his mind clear while he's tearing his body apart in the physical fight for the game. He should have trained with special forces to learn how to give everything and still keep his mind clear... now it's too late and it's super sad since I love his style....
@@atxsnf658 Training with special forces might be really good for his mental strength, but missing out on practise and tournaments in ones prime years could be devastating to a sportsmans career. It's a high-risk, high-reward solution imo. Might work. might just miss out on crucial practise.
@@ililcookie_ My statement was a bit cliché, I must admit :) To me the main issue comes from the mindset. All french tennis players thinks they reached their goal an don't feel the need to perform more. A true champion never thinks like that, "always a beginner" mindset is the way to always try to get better and, to me, the best path to became a champion :)
stefan Ghinescu that’s not true Monfils was outplaying Nadal. It’s just like in the USO Medvedev was outplaying him at the end. It’s just that beast mode in itself is very inconsistent for 4-5 shots in a row you won’t be able to put those shots that you put before and then you will start to doubt yourself and hold back.
Yeah Monfils was absolutely brilliant in Monte-Carlo for two sets but Nadal was able to sustain his level better. Underrated talent of the big 3 is hardly ever dropping their level after winning a close set
monfils is extremely atletic and energetic however, you can clearly see that djokovic controls the game and tires monfils to death. Although he has some spectacular points its impossible maintaining that endurance till the end of the match
The common point of this matchs is that after all of them he did not continue to play tennis, in 2009 it was the end of the season, in 2016 played great in Monte carlo but was injured after and did not play the rest of the clay court season including the French open. After the match against nishikori in Montreal 2017 he did not play cincinnati and had to quit at the US open 3rd round due to injury. In 2019 he beats Kholshreiber in what is for me the match of his life in terms of tennis and then he did not play the next match and even the next month due to injury and dropped the dynamic. 2020 ? I have no words for it... Match points against Djokovic for a 13th win in a row and potential back to back to back titles + being ranked number two in the race before IW, did not convert and the coronavirus came... This is the story of Monfils
6:29 freeze it guys. take a good look at the position of the two players n the ball and look at the scoreboard. yes, monfils won the match from there !!!
The second match against nadal at monte carlo just goes to show that you can be one of the best players in the world playing some of the best tennis of your life and still loose to nadal on clay
These were great matches indeed but one is missing here (maybe his best match ever): 2014 davis cup final versus Federer. He was absolutely unbeatable, hitting everything 100%. I guess it's not in this video because of broadcasting rights but to me this performance tops them all.
That forehand against Nadal in Monte-Carlo (1-1, 40-15) is so geometrically implausible, I’ve never seen someone hit a forehand that low and hard and still have it go in. Unbelievable
