Work Experience is a routine part of every child’s schooling in the UK. You usually do it in your last year of school, before sixth form. Most people end up doing nothing the whole day as no one trust kids to run their business. Most people find it pointless but some people get genuine opportunities for their future.

The thing with the tie is one of those details that really brings back memories of how crazy some of the unofficial school rules where, for us in the 90's we had the thin end at the front and the thick end tucked into the shirt. Also, you had to carry your backpack with one strap, being a "two strapper" was grounds for merciless bullying. I have friends now in their 40's that where so well conditioned to do this that they still carry backpacks with a single strap!

I think most people in England do work experience when they're about 14 years old. I went to my old primary school. I wanted a sleep in and it's just 5 minutes from me. I had to be there at 8.45 (in comparison to my school, which was 7.45) and got a full hour for lunch and left at 3.15.

Work experience, is just that, a little bit of experience in a job. You choose what things you are interested in and they try and get you a placement at some company that does that. it's usually only a 1-2 weeks thing and they are not obligated to pay you. Although a lot of places will either give you a bit of cash, or treat you in other ways.
Like this garage they said they are going to the pub at lunchtime, they would almost certainly cover his lunch.

Most kids leave school at 16 and start work over here. Further education is simply too expensive. Germany has an excellent scheme. A school leaver gets a job, then once a week they have to go to arbeits schule (work school). The must attend and the employer has to allow them. They get to learn the ins and outs of the job, things you might not learn while working because the employer hasn't the time or skill to thoroughly educate the worker.
It means that every German worker is trained properly to be efficient and knowledgeable. European countries invest in the education of their youth. Unlike UK and America, which seeks to educate *just* enough to understand basic instructions in order to do the work without injuring or killing themselves or a colleague or customer. A trainee baker in the UK will be shown how to bake a loaf of bread and what temperature the oven must be. That's all.
In Germany, the German baker will be taught about the properties of different flour, to make different breads, what effect longer or shorter rising times have, how to use different ingredients, like olive oil instead of fat, how to bake different types of bread, nutritional values, how to bake gluten free and why it's important for some people.

Fun fact, the guys in the garage calling Will “Cholmondley-Warner” is a Harry Enfield reference as he’s posh. Two worlds collide.

Used to tie it the wrong way in my school so we had the skinny end instead of fat end (also only about 4inch long too)

14:46 ... I loved work experience - but I learned - that I liked bouncing from one job to another ...
Learning everything i was interersted in ( jumping from many expertises ), instead of learning ONLY 1 thing that particular job had an expertise in.

Everybody when I was at school used to wear their tie like Jay! I guess it was just cool? haha
The Inbetweeners has to be the most accurate show of what school in the UK is actually like.

If you like the headteacher you should see if the show Task Master is available in the US, he (Greg Davies) hosts a this with fellow comedians where the winner wins a bust of his head by doing stupid tasks.

Work experience never used to be 6th form- I did mine when I was in 4th or 5th year if I remember right- you got to source your own workplace to spend a week at hence why some chose theirs with family in their jobs or through them at the place they worked, if you didn’t source your own workplace before the deadline then the school had a list of placements to hand out so it paid to find your own or be stuck working a shit job for week!

The short tie thing is something that is/was common in schools where they made you wear ties In the UK. Was kinda a rebellion against the norm while following the letter of the school uniform code.

I always felt like work experience was furnished to be more enticed by college and the education route as the government makes more back from student loans than they do in your taxes on a minimum wage job.

I did Work Experience 4 times (for 2 weeks each time) once in School at 14-15 and 3 times during College. You have to do it and you don't get a choice or you didn't once upon a time.
