Thank you for your video Zoe. I'm so glad your husband is recovering well. As a Fashion designer whose first degree was in Computer Science. I can relate to both aspects of this conversation and it's nice to hear about the ways the fashion industry can learn from the tech industry. Thank you 🎉
As a woman in tech with a deep interest in the fashion industry, this video caught my attention! Recruiting a business oriented co founder, having an optimistic vision, sticking to a roadmap, hiring based on skill set rather than pedigree and sharing IP via open source are all great applications for fashion, but I think you missed a core aspect. Tech incentivizes innovation, fashion disincentivizes it. Fashion should learn to actually value innovation rather than chasing cyclical trends. The fashion industry reminds me of medieval fiefdoms where the CD is the monarch and every other creative within the company is unquestionably in service of their vision. Only the business people can challenge them and even then, they’re usually the main drivers of sticking to what’s worked before, encouraging the trend cycle. Tech isn’t perfect but it emphasizes disruption on the micro and macro level. In smaller companies, the product and eng teams are encouraged to come up with new ideas that achieve product market fit. In larger companies, product and eng come up with new features that lead to incremental revenue gain. I don’t see this same drive for innovation to achieve product market fit (actually fixing consumer problems / meeting consumer desire) in fashion. For example, why can’t everyone who wants it find a well fitting pair of jeans easily? Why is it so hard to find quality special occasion wear at a reasonable price? Why is bra shopping so miserable? These are real consumer pain points that niche companies have tried to solve but nothing has worked at scale. The fashion industry has trade offs that tech doesn’t need to think about as much (e.g. sustainability vs production, body image expectation vs reality etc) so the problems are more complex but I do think fashion could use more innovative thinking to solve these problems.
Hm, definitely interested in this conversation. Thank you for sharing from your experience! Do you hope to improve the function of fashion companies - optimizing consumer outcomes - with your tech perspective? I'm curious what you're curious about in fashion 😊
Every industry has an Establishment set and Disrupter set. You are comparing Establishment Fashion with Disrupter Tech. Establishment Tech very much is comprised of set-in-their-ways dinosaurs who are slow to change. Disrupter Fashion exists and is growing every day. The number of new intimates brands astonishes, as they break the norms of their categories, expanding fits, embracing sustainability in various ways, breaking out of the mold of the male gaze, redefining the feminine and the female, accommodating different disabilities.. Compare apples to apples.
Very good topic Zoe Hong, yes The Fashion Industry does need something like GITHUB! Actually thinking on it maybe THE FASHION GROUP INTERNATIONAL should turn into that. Thank you so much for your generosity and sharing so much with us all!
Github could also be Github for fashion people, to be fair! It’s geared towards software projects, but there is no stipulation about what kind of projects you can host there. It would be great to develop a git-compatible project structure for fashion, to track progress and document changes during product development. However, it would be neat to have some software communicating with Github, which would make it easy to manage the project without needing to learn much about how git or anything technical like that works.
You're awesome. Thanks for more good stuff to ponder over. It's especially lovely and inspiring to watch you admire your husband's accomplishments and skills and link them to fashion! So Glad y'all are Thriving ❤ I'm already excited to support this new Github for fashion 🎉😄
Ran to this video and tripped on the way when I saw "fashion and tech" in the same sentence LOL🤣. You always provide really insightful conversations that go beyond fashion which is really refreshing! Github for fashion would be life changing, fashion needs fresh talent all the time and a platform like that would give graduates and people who find it hard to break into the industry, a chance to kickstart their careers. I'm also really happy to hear your husband is recovering well and you guys are thriving 🥰
i thoroughly enjoyed this video, however i’m curious, from a merchandising view, how can fashion brands and retailers use big data and digital technology to advance their assortment goals?
Perhaps the fact that fashion is uncopyrightable that fashion people won't feel comfortable sharing some novel fashion idea for someone who has the resources to make it their own. We are selfish with our ideas. We wanna claim to be the first to make a specific fashion creation.

Hi Zoe! I'm really glad that your husband is recovering well!
Oh my God! It's true we need a Fashion Hub!
How can I help you to develop it?
We need software engineers and funding.
