  • Table Settings on Private Jet
In this episode, we discuss place settings onboard a private/business jet. Standard placements on nesting tables for one or two people, and conference tables for four people, including salt and pepper, flatware, napkin, and various beverage placements.
Setting a table seems basic however, many of the etiquette standards do not work onboard a business jet and yet, there are some rules that rule. Besides dealing with limited tabletop space, another challenge is we can only access our clients from one side in the cabin, preventing a synchronized service. Therefore, this hurdle often tricks our brains, resulting in place settings being set inconsistently or completely backwards. Unfortunately, we see this all too often on CFA posted reels and photos and if we are noticing the errors, most likely, so are your clients.
Learning how to set a proper table onboard, is one of the first steps of inflight service standards.
    PLACEMENTS TIMELINE MENU:
    04:26 | Salt and Pepper
    06:09 | Silverware Placement
    012:50 | Napkin Placement
    15:17 | Glassware Placement
    16:40 | Coffee/Tea Placement
** The “How To…” Tutorials are designed as cabin service standards ("the basics”) onboard business and private jets however, many of these standards can certainly be elevated, as well as implemented at home.

A very helpful video. I notice that you mention attendants getting the side for the forks wrong by mirroring - this is quite amusing to me as a British person, because (unless perhaps for pasta) forks are only ever used left-handed, so obviously always placed on the left - even young children know this. It’s interesting to see how cultural differences can potentially cause mistakes.

It’s not necessarily because the left hand/fork usage and cultures. It’s because on a business jet, we only have access to one side of the table instead of walking around it to place the flatware. So our brains want to mirror the placement for the opposite side place setting, by mistake - not intentionally.

What is the protocol for a bread plate if there are no butter knives or an insufficient number of butter knives?

You can absolutely use the bread plates without any bread and butter knives. They’ll just use the salad or dinner knife for their butter, which is fine.

Great presentation Scott! Where did you purchase the silver tray you used in the video that had your set ups on? It is the perfect size.

Thank you so much! It is the perfect sized tray. We have a set of 4 - this one, a smaller narrower version, and two square. Unfortunately, I have no idea as these were already outfitted when I took over the account. They are a hammered stainless steel but don't know the brand. I'll see if I can find out for you!

They're from Target and from over a decade ago. I kept my set, thankfully. They are the best!
