How to Cool a Room without AC (Effective & Affordable)

  • Cool your room without air conditioning (AC) using a floor fan. Floor fans blow the heat out of your room. Additionally, they reduce the perceived temperature by blowing away layers of hot air from your skin.
I recommend this floor fan: amzn.to/3wnNjFj (click to view it on amazon)
To cool a room without an AC, you still need to remove heat energy from your room. The only way to do this is to blow the heat out the window.
Check out my full post on the 20 cheapest ways to cool your rooms and entire house: heatertips.com/cool-room-hous...

I did some work and compiled the 20 most affordable ways to cool a room: heatertips.com/cool-room-house-cheap/
My focus is on strategies that actually work. And to be honest: You probably already know most of them. Cooling a room is no magic! Some will require fans or ACs, but there are some other methods that are completely free and don't need electricity or any devices.
    Hope that's helpful!

It's great that you know that, but how is that important. Just replace "cold" with "less warm" and tadaa, no meaning changed. It is just a less easy synonym.
What is more important that blowing heat away works only if you want to cool down a local heat source by distributing the heat to the surrounding. But you cant keep a room cool by setting up fans, if the heat source is the surrounding.

The way I survive is I take a hand towel (unfolded about the size of your back) and I saturate it in cold water and hang it around my neck. When it gets warm I rinse it in more cold water. When I go to bed I mist my hair with water, and I put a cold towel on my back while the fan blows at my head. It cools my core temperature down enough to let me fall asleep.

I live in the deep South US - growing up very few had air conditioning that was in the 50s and 60s for me -
I'm 68 now and use little to no air-conditioning even when it's 100° to 105°F daily like it was last summer -
My dad was born in 1912 and only 20% could afford electricity down here -
Most slept on the porch during summer in the deep South US before they had electric fans -
I live in the rural deep south of the US - for those who had electricity from about 1900 they had what was termed a farm home light plant in rural America -
It consisted of 16 large two volt cells - and a 32 volt generator to charge the battery bank all day once a week -
The battery's lasted 40 to 50 yrs the acid strength was 1.220 so they don't sulphate and the plates don't swell and rot like when an acid strength is 1.275 with lead acid batterys so they last much longer -
You can look up farm light plants in the US on the net - there is a lot of information from the 1920s and 30s on the subject -
In rural towns there were entire lines of appliances sold that were 32 volts DC instead of 110 or 220 AC as used in city's -
Down here ceiling fans and window fans were a high priority also refrigerator and freezers -- in the city's and in rural homes -
Those fans made back then had what we in the electrical field call X or U frame motors - there expected life of service is 300 yrs. - they also use quite a bit less power than modern fan motors in most cases -
To live were I live at and not be uncomfortable when your in your home - you do have to have an understanding of ventilation and moving the air around in a home -
I use the old type fans one was made. In 1913 I think - I use ceiling old ceiling fans and window fans during summer -
the ones I have today are all 110 or115 volts but have polyphase motors -
Most of the Chinese fans sold here now use R frame shaded pole motors - they burn far more power than my old fans do and often burn up each summer if there not used in an air-conditioned home -
My grandfather was a early 1900s mechanic/generator man - I'm 3rd generation and worked on generators, & solidstate motor drives in the offshore and remote mountain oilfields -
In the end we had to understand ventilation and kw's burned to move volumes of air among many other things - we were. Know as SCR electricians or systems techs -

This is why all the houses before home AC were made have attic fans/central fans that blow air throughout and all around the house. I used to have them in my last 2 houses, they're pretty nice but don't compare to AC. There is also a method used on poultry and livestock farm buildings called "cooling cells/cool cells" and use cold water that drop through the "cool cell pads" that maintain the moisture, there a really stiff cardboard rectangle shaped box with holes, the edges are so sharp they can cut you. The holes allow air to flow through the pads and into the building to get it to just the right temperature for the animals. I imagine if you used this method for a house it would work pretty good and maybe even save money. who knows

I have this idea which I haven't seen anyone implement yet, not on youtube at least.
It's to use 2 radiators, a larger one and a smaller one. The larger stays outdoors where in front of it is placed a wet rug (or any thick porous material). A separate small pump is used to continously pump water over the material so that it stays damp. Then a fan pulls air thru that material and the radiator, thus increasing the cooling of the water that's running thru the radiator. On the other side, in the room the smaller radiator (which is connected thru piping to the bigger radiator+evaporative cooling unit outside) uses another fan to blow air which would be cooler.
The heat in the room would be absorbed by the radiator into the water, where it's being cooled in the outdoor radiator, where the heat is removed into the outside air. I'm not sure how efficient or how much it could help cool a room & if the money & effort spent to build such a contraption would be worth it, tho I'm sure theoretically it should definitely help cool at a lower cost than running an air conditioner.
I cannot afford to build it at the moment, would be cool if someone could try this idea. If & when I build it, I'll definitely be making a video about it.

    • @yasirsaheed
      @yasirsaheed ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@shnay-nay2162 No, a swamp cooler adds humidity to the room as it directly forces air thru moving water and relies on the evaporation of the water to cool the air. My idea is more complicated, tho 1 part of it is technically a swamp cooler, but it stays outside the room, thus not adding the humidity, it acts to cool the water in tubes, which is pumped back into the room and hot air moving across the cold tubes is what cools the air.

Question: I am in a very, very (unbearably) hot, old, concrete apartment. I face southwest, have 2 rooms, a window in each, both facing the same way (ie no cross-ventilation). Even in the winter in Canada, I cannot cool my bedroom below 75 degrees. In the summer, with a portable AC, it's still hotter. I don't know where to put a fan to blow the air outside as you suggest - my portable AC in my bedroom blocks the window opening. The only option is the window in the living room, which faces the same direction. Where would you put the fan? From you video it seems that the living room is the best option, so that air from the bedroom gets pulled out? (I realize I can experiment but I thought you may have a suggestion!) Thanks so much for this video!

    • @justinluc2572
      @justinluc2572 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As long as there are two windows in an apartment, putting a fan in front of one of them will force air in through the other, even if they are facing the same direction. Unfortunately, that means you will have to remove your portable AC in order for this effect to happen.
For your situation, it's up to you to decide how effective your AC is compared to a fan at cooling your apartment down and choose which needs to go.
I'm sorry for your situation with your hot home. You can blame poorly planned architecture for that. Good luck.

I have to say, I've spent a fair bit of time splashing my face with water and then fanning it either with a book etc, or just putting my face directly in front of the fan, this summer. How does this work? Does the water take heat away from your face as it evaporates, and because you also fan it, it evaporates the water quicker so that you cool down/feel cooler quicker? That's my guess but I don't tend to "do science" very well lol.

    • @heatertips

You are right! Water evaporates and absorbs heat. The fan blows the absorbed heat away. Therefore the temperature of the air layer on your face is lower than room temperature.

With your situation, it seems as if a window aircon or a window fan might be your only options if your goal is to cool your space.
If you live in a dry climate, a swamp cooler is an excellent alternative to aircon. If not, then you might just have to cough up the money for air con.
      Good luck.

Does a floor fan need to be placed out the window with the fan blowing outside?

    • @able880
      @able880 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@lesliegray3395Leslie to be comfortable if it's a bit warm or hot you generally need one fan blowing air out the window or you can use it to to draw out side air into the room - at times sucking air from out side works a lot better -
To sleep if it's hot and your sweating you need a second fan circulating air in the room - I live in a hot region and rarely use AC - I use a good ceiling fan when I sleep so I don't sweat as I sleep -
It's almost imposable to sleep when your sweating -

@@NuEs365 I put it on the ground right beneath my window, pointing towards my window, so air was blowing outside.
Although I'm not even sure if it was really working and if so, it might have cooled down my room by like 0.15 degrees Celsius (not calculated). So honestly just save up and get an A/C. I still have to buy one for next summer.
Don't waste your money on fans of any type. And especially not on "Personal Air Conditioners" that you put water in and leave on your desk. How ever much you spend on one of those pieces of garbage, it won't work. The whole idea of a Personal Air Conditioner is a scam.

Exchange... Blowing air from indoors to outdoors means air will be drawn in from outdoors elsewhere. This is not a solution when the outdoor temperature exceedes that of the indoor. Evaporative Cooling... A fan blowing room temperature air on you causing a cooling effect is due to your body's evaporative cooling and is less effective the higher the relative humidity. Not an engineer, just grew up and live in a desert where temperatures in the summer months regularly hit triple digits.

You don't understand physics, you're wrong. Putting frozen stuff in a closed room cools it down because it takes heat energy out of the air for it to melt. thus cooling down the room. The energy to melt frozen stuff comes from SOMEWHERE, right? Putting a fan in front of ice causes it to melt faster. Here's how I do it:
Put ice cream tubs, milk jugs and 1.25L - 2L plastic disposable bottles in your freezer full of water instead of throwing them out. Fill up your freezer with them, it's actually more efficient to fill your freezer with stuff anyway.
Then, fill the freezer to the brim as full as you can in any empty space with these liters and liters of water containers.
Once frozen, take them out and put them around your room, in front of a small desktop fan on a piece of cardboard on the ground.
DO NOT OPEN WINDOWS this lets outside heat in!
While these are melting with the air from the fan, put more stuff in the freezer so once your bottles have melted you can swap them out with the other batch in the freezer, and repeat the process. It actually cools your room significantly.
