    So you can create stop motion animated films with so many different types of materials. I think one of the most effective materials to use, of course, would be clay. And clay is a great great material for stop motion animation because it's so easy to change the form of clay. When animating with clay, you would apply the same rules you apply when you are animating with found objects. You would do things in small increments.
    So we have a ball of green clay here, set up with our camera pointing down to it. We're lighting with this little clip light. We have our computer, with which we'll take pictures of the clay by hitting the space bar. And we'll move our clay a little bit. We could also, not just move it, we can change it. I'm moving the clay a little and I'm taking my thumbs and pressing it a little bit flat. Taking a picture. Move it. Flatten it. Take a picture.
    It's great to take your time with your animation. Don't rush through. There's that sound. I'm going to flatten it out a bit more. Take a picture. Maybe we'll start to flatten it and split it as well. We're going to go in here.
    I'm just using my fingers to press into the clay and make these changes. I'm going to go ahead and start to really separate it. Take a picture. This is something that you want to happen gradually, in small increments, not necessarily all at once. A little more. Picture. Move it a little more. I'm pinching and breaking the clay in the middle just a bit. And there's a moment right before it's going to snap.
    And now these separate pieces will fly out of the frame.
    Something you will notice is that the clay will leave behind a little bit of clay sometimes, or a little bit of oil. And that's OK. If you prefer not to have that oil left behind, you can animate on a wipeable surface, a dry erase board, a piece of plexiglass. In this case, you will see a little of that oil because we are animating on paper.
    Now that those pieces have gone completely out of the frame, I'll take a few more pictures, and we'll play our film.
    And that's just a very very basic approach to animating with clay. There's a lot you can do with the clay.
    That's just a start.

    Claymation or stop animation still blows my mind. Every single little move made is multiple frames. Extremely tedious! My hat goes off to anyone who does this

      +Smeexs Seus He used iStopMotion, and you should generally work around the 20-24 frame rate. This lets it be smoother.

      +Smeexs Seus Europe used to be on 24/25 frames per second and the US on 30 frames per second. It had to do with the video systems used, and with digital, it no longer matters much, so you can use 25, but because I'm not very good in maths I prefer 24: you need to make the difference between pictures taken and frames taken, as animators tend to cheat on that by filming in "twos" - we take one picture for every two frames. It means we only need to do half the poses needed than if we were shooting in "ones" (one picture for every frame). Only big productions like Disney are likely to shoot everything on ones. Half of 24 is 12, it's a round number, half of 25 is 12,5. So you will also see software suggesting you to use this frame-per-second speed. That's because if you shoot two pictures per frame and play it at 24 fps, you'll see the movement at the same speed as if you were shooting in "ones" and playing it at 12fps. So why not choose the later? Because though in stop-motion, we tend to stick to "twos" we might use "ones" according to the speed of the movement intended and if we were shooting all at 12fps we wouldn't have that flexibility of juggling between ones and twos. Stick to a frame-rate and don't change it much because as you practice, you will get used to figure out how many frames you need for this or that movement, without having to use a timewatch all the time. If you keep changing frames per second, it will be difficult to acquire that.

    I have a questions about general production of claymation films. Specifically referencing the nightmare before Christmas, would you record voices from voice actors and then do the filming, or vice versa? Google didnt provide any definite answers

    • @beaniebaby13
      @beaniebaby13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late to the party, but the reason you probably didn't find a definite answer is because it's likely a mix of both. If you are making an animated film with dialogue, I think it's best to plan your script ahead of time and then get your voice actors to send in their submissions and adjust both accordingly, depending on how high of a quality you want your end product to be. You'll probably have to redo multiple scenes and have them submit multiple samples of dialogue before you have something you're happy with, but having a script in mind will help because if your characters have mouths, you will have to form the mouth shapes to correspond with the word sounds being made. Animation of any kind is an extremely tedious process so I totally commend anyone willing to try, just know that it will be frustrating. And hey, since I'm late, maybe you've made several thing already! Excited to see and good luck to you, Elizabeth. ❤

      you can do it with any video editing program by how many frames per second each picture you take plays cyberlink 12 , stopmotion, fcp, imovie. Besides that all you need is a camera tripod and light. Make sure you use a tripod. Enter your photos into a video editing platform and let each one 7 to 10 frames. Double the frames to slow down movement on some of the action shots.
