  • Bremen, officially called the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, is a city on the Vezera River. They have the third highest population density in Germany. Together with the port of Bremerhaven, 60 km away, it is the smallest of the sixteen German federal states.
Thanks to its location on the Vezer River, Bremen is all about water - its successes as well as its downfalls. The wealth from trade flowing downstream made Bremen one of the richest cities and enabled them to become one of the leading members of the Hanseatic League. Development came to a standstill in the 16th century when the riverbed silted up and large ships carrying goods could no longer reach the port. This depression lasted until the 19th century, when construction of the new port of Bremenhaven began north of Bremen.
The oldest mention of Bremen comes from the year 782, when Charlemagne founded a diocese here, which was elevated to an archbishopric in 845. From here, missionaries went to the Nordic countries to convert the Vikings to the “true faith”.
It achieved the status of an imperial city under Frederick I Barbarossa. His statue, like the statue of Charlemagne, can be seen in the facade of the Gothic town hall, which is over six hundred years old. The building, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is an unmistakable landmark of the city.
Bremen's landmarks also include a ten-meter-high statue of a knight with a sword, which symbolizes the city's rights as well as the city's autonomy and freedom. The so-called Rolland's statue, which used to be common in many German villages, was originally made of wood, but was replaced by a new one made of granite three hundred years ago.
None of the tourists will miss the famous bronze sculpture depicting four Bremen musicians. According to legend, the donkey, dog, cat and rooster from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale can bring good luck to anyone who touches them.
The square with the guild houses, the cathedral and the entire city center are also worth a visit, where twelve hundred years of history breathe in on the visitor at every turn. And this despite the fact that Bremen was one of the most heavily bombed cities in the Second World War - it survived 173 air raids.
