    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, yes and no. The miter saw can cut the angled edges for plywood 1/2 inch thick plywood edges. If you use 1/4 inch plywood it is thin enough that you do not need a miter saw to cut the angled edges and just cover up with caulking. I plan to do a video soon showing this method more in-depth soon. Thanks.

    Great video! What’s the best silent generator for powering marquee letters outside without outlets?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. I have never tried that. I try to stick to extension cords. Generators are loud. If I had to do it, I would look into a power inverter. They are like a generator but mainly just a big battery that you charge. The one issue with them is that they are crazy expensive, usually over $700. And I would not leave that unattended, as people would love to just pick it up lol. So its hard but I recommend just and extension cord if possible.

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, thank you so much for watching my video. For measurements I can give you basic measurements because I didn't use a template I just kept drawing using a square and ruler till they looked like I felt would work for what I wanted. They are 3 ft tall, 2ft wide, 8 inch inside diameter. The number one was easier to draw out of those measurements. The number 5 was a little more difficult. But definitely doable with a ruler and a pencil. I would recommend drawing it on a poster board to get a feel for the size and cutting it with scissors. Then you could trace it on the wood. Also, etsy sells some marquee downloads that can be printed and cutout. If you have any other questions please let me know and thanks again.

    Awesome! What did you use to attach the sides? Wood glue? Nails?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi thanks for watching. I used 1 inch Brad nails with a brad nailer and wood glue. The glue when dried really adds to the strength more than the nails, because over time nails will loosen. But the wood glue takes time to adhere properly so the nails hold it tight while allowing the glue to adhere the surfaces together. You can use just nails but I like to use wood glue with these, as with transport and people grabbing the edges to lift up and move. The edges can shift apart. The glue and nails together strengthen the bond.

    What kind of mdf board I need 5ft letters

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for your question. For a 5 ft letter I would think of using plywood. Just because that is a tall structure and plywood is lighter and more sturdier when put together. MDF may be cheaper but with that size you definitely want a solid structure. I have not made a 5ft marquee yet, but I would probably use 1/2 inch plywood if I did. For making marquee letters there are two woods used most often. Plywood or MDF, I have been using MDF most of the time due to cost. With recent events plywood pricing went crazy high, more than double the original cost. So, I used MDF which is good, smooth finish and takes paint well after primer. But can be heavier and absorbs moister more than plywood. I have recently went back to plywood as the pricing has gone done some. Plywood is lighter and creates a more rigid structure. I am planning a video soon to talk about in more detail about marquee builds and the different techniques. Thank you for your question.

    What is thickness of the MDF you are using?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for watching. I have used a couple of sizes to see what works best. For me 1/2 works best. Also, I have began to make most out of plywood as plywood prices has gone done some. When I made this plywood prices had skyrocketed and it was cheaper to use MDF by more than half where I am located. Now its closer in price somewhat. Plywood is lighter and stronger. So I would recommend 1/2 inch plywood for the whole number. Thanks for you question.

    How do you handle the diagonal corners of the outer layer of the 5? Are you cutting the ends at an angle?

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi thanks for watching. Yes cutting the corners is the part that takes some practice. I use my miter saw to help cut each one to the angle needed. I cut the piece close to size just a little bigger. Then put it next to the spot it will be at and trace the corner on the wood. Then I use the miter saw to sneak up on the cut. All the angles need certain angles for them to align right. They don't have to be perfect as the nail gun and sanding can help push the corners together. You can use a circular saw to cut the angles as well. Then any small gaps can be covered in wood putty to clean up. After you do a couple corners it gets easier.👍

      Hi thank you so much for watching. The wood I used was MDF (Medium-density fiberboard). The reason I used this is because it paints real nice and clean. You can use plywood but you would need to make sure to cover the knots in the wood with a good primer because after a while you will be able to see the knots through the paint from the plywood. I just prefer the MDF for projects like these. They sell these smaller MDF pieces at Home depot usually, and that's were I got these sizes.

    • @MakerDecor

      @@dsorajigibson6637 That is a difficult question as everybody's market is vastly different. Where I am located people rent them from around $60 to as low as $45 a letter or number. But in other markets it can be much higher, also can be rented with balloons wrapped around to dramatically increase the price. But it does take much more work and time with balloons. I would recommend checking your local market online seeing what the prices are and how there marquees look. Then price yours accordingly. Your market and the brand you are building for people wanting your work vs somebody else, is what helps with your pricing. Thank you for your question.

      How long do you think the MDF will last with wear and tear? I.e. Outside, wind

    • @MakerDecor
      @MakerDecor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nesamoore24 Hi thanks for commenting. MDF is not meant for rainy weather for sure. To protect the MDF you can make sure you cover completely in paint to decrease the chance of moisture penetrating the MDF. MDF will expand if left out in the rain. The reason I used MDF because the price first and the look when painted is very clean compared to wood. Plywood is not great for rain as it will expand as well but not as much as MDF. But again sealing it with pain completely will give you the greatest protection from rainy weather. Just outdoors in the sun and wind will be fine. In reality the most damage will come from transporting them and setup up. Small nicks and dents may happen with transport, etc. Most can be covered up with caulking or fresh coat of paint. The stuff we rent out like candy cart, baby boxes, backdrop I have just repainted once to cover any nicks from transport and use. In short, the MDF should allow you a good amount of use with minimal upkeep and a good return on investment since its like $20 for MDF, $10 Lights, $10 paint. Plus your time creating the Marquee. The best would no doubt be metal marquees but would increase the startup cost of each marquee letter/ number. I have been thinking of trying to see how I can create a metal marquee that is inexpensive, but that's still working on how to do it. Thank you so much for your question, I hope I was helpful.

      Hi, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Its not a problem, I understand a lot of people who watch these videos are not carpenters and build a lot of decoration projects. So I try my best to break everything down so its easy to understand. I used a circular saw to cut the straight lines first, then a multi-tool to cut out the corners. I used a drill to make the holes for the lights with a paddle bit. The big yellow saw in the back is a miter saw. YOU DO NOT need that, you can just use the circular saw from the beginning to cut those pieces. I just used it to be quicker since I was late. If you have any questions just let me know, thank you.
