I feel like they really could’ve done something with the whole “dressing like Aubrey Hepburn in a French movie” thing. Like, they could’ve made it into a metaphor for how Emily is interested in French culture, but only knows it thru an American lens? Idk I feel like there’s something there they can expand on...

Camille had so much potential as a character, but then they made her turn nasty this season to make Emily seem better by comparison. I can understand her wanting revenge on Emily for cheating with Gabriel, but it takes TWO people to commit adultery, not one. And ultimately, she looked weak for taking Gabriel back after all that!

Mina, thank you for mentioning Petra. It's so triggering seeing everyone else ignoring the issue. I think many westerners do not understand the discrimination that eastern Europeans face: we are seen as inferior, it's much deeper than just "a stereotype".
We are denied jobs, we get told that we are whores, that we're thieves constantly. These portrayals in media, as subtle as they may seem, pay a HUGE role in how people will then treat us in real life.
I think it's hard for Americans to understand it, because we're white-- but the truth is that racism and xenophobia are much different in Europe. Being pale doesn't save you from being called subhuman, and people will make sure to tell you that your culture is wrong, or that you shouldn't speak your language in public.
We're tired of being shown this way in media, because it's not only American TV doing this.

As a European, I’d just like to say that their portrayal of the only eastern European character, Ukrainian Petra, is as bad as if they made a show in America, had one black character and made her the bad guy. In Europe, sadly, there’s a lot of stigma towards ex-soviet countries.
Imagine if France made ‘Émilie aux etats unis’. In the first season they portray all the Americans as stupid, fat, uneducated and impolite. In the second season they introduce the only black character, and she steals from a store.

But, unlike Emily, the layering of Tokyo (generally, Japanese) street fashion articles are actually based around personality or story-just highly exaggerated and pronounced. They’re kind of like art pieces. Meanwhile, Emily’s choices are just like “I saw these pieces layered on a Pinterest post, I think it’s chic.”

For me, if the clothing is too unrealistic it takes me out of the story. Clothes are an essential part of the story telling, and of course you want it to look good, but you want the clothes to support the story you are telling, not contradict it. I'm also sick of the word "aspirational" is euphemism for "disconnected from reality" as if that justifies betraying the whole story you're trying to tell. The story we're being told is that Emily doesn't have a background in fashion, isn't very knowledable or passionate about it, isn't a primary interest of hers. But the story we're seeing onscreen is the story of a person wearing runway clothing and highly editorial looks that don't make sense in real life, who spends a lot of time getting dressed every day, who spends a disproportionate amount of her income in clothes such that she ought to be starving and having her phone cut off, and spends a large amount of time shopping even though we're told that Emily works nonstop. These are two completely different stories, a giant clash between what we're being told vs. what we are shown.
Personally, I think Emily's clothes are eye-bleedingly ugly. The individual pieces are very chic, but the way they're put together is, as the character notes, silly, and as you note, unprofessional. They don't make sense for her setting, her background, or her personality, and they also DON'T LOOK GOOD. She reminds me of Edina Monsoon from Absolutely Fabulous (or Bubble at her worst moments). But Edina looked that way on purpose to communicate that Eddie is a ridiculous person, and Emily is not supposed to be ridiculous.

Not only did she sleep with Camilles long term boyfriend but she slept with her underage brother and took his virginity and is the reason why her father lost the tip of his finger. She then runs after Camille and apologises but honestly if Camille never wanted to speak to her again, I’d understand. Also, she leads Gabriel on for half the season and then gets with Alfie for the other half in front of Gabriel. If Gabriel moves on and gives Camille another shot, I understand because Emily shut him down multiple times. I just hated how the show made it seem like Emily made “quirky mistakes” and did “acts of passion and love”. She trampled all over Camille and then was offended that Camille was mad.

Which is really weird considering how it's the exact same team who OK-ed all the racism, xenophobia, and stereotyping from season 1 in the first place. You shouldn't be praising people for changing stuff that shouldn't have been there at all. It really says a lot about the producers of this show that they needed to have it spelled out for them by the entire audience and industry that it's not okay to be racist.
I get that if someone is a fan of the show (even in a guilty pleasure/ escapism kind of way) then they have to be ok with shallowness to some degree (cos... the entire show is shallow as hell), but Jesus Christ. When are we gonna stop romanticising doing the bare minimum?

Mina, I'm glad you brought up the Slavophobic portrayal of the Ukrainian woman. It honestly feels to me like Slavo-/Russophobia (since Ukraine and Russia are the same to Americans) is considered acceptable among a lot of people who otherwise claim to care about bigotry & making media more progressive. Like I've seen whole videos pointing out seemingly every criticism they can make of this season in terms of representation and not bring up the Ukrainian character at all. I think this is because Americans tend to see absolutely everything about ethnicity through the lens of skin color (which is not the paradigm in many places), so they see Slavic peoples as "white" and therefore the entire effing Cold War never happened and it's acceptable to use them as a punching bag...or rather, the Cold War did happen and that's *why* it's ok to use them as a punching bag. And with that attitude, the writers thought, as they tried to make the show more sensitive, that it wouldn't get any backlash to show a stereotypical Eastern European woman as a "joke." But there's a long, long history of the US and Western Europe as seeing people from Eastern Europe/Eurasia as extremely "othered," and Americans are so used to this that many don't even notice that it's offensive.
The US ruling class has been propagating offensive stereotypes about Russians and other Slavic people, especially women, since the mid 20th century at least - for example, after WWII, when they wanted American women to leave the factories and go home and have babies, they created this image of Soviet women as burly and mannish, to try to make it seem like a bad thing that they worked in factories or even had highly educated jobs like being doctors and scientists. The stereotypes have changed over time, but they always have political reasons behind them.

Oh my good thank you! That isn’t too asked enough! Where I live there are a lot of Slavic people like Polish, Ukrainian, Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian, etc. And a lot of people don’t treat them well. As well we don’t talk about the genocides that Slavs faced like the Holodomor, the Katyń Massacre, and the Canadian Internment Camps of Ukrainians, to name a few.

I'm confused as to why most people view Camille's actions as revenge against Emily instead of her allowing herself to work through her feelings for Gabriel, which is how I viewed it. Sis had invested five years into this relationship and admitted to her mother that she still loved him. The pact seemed more like Camille taking Emily out of the game so that she could focus on mending her relationship with Gabriel rather than revenge against Emily.
Was Camille appearing in Gabriel's apartment at the end meant to be a twist?

I don't think the bar for "better" was very high. Like I'd give season 1 a 1/10 and season 2 a 2/10. Season 2 addressed a lot of stuff, but I felt it did so in a surface-level way. Alfie felt like a token character meant as a direct writer's response to season 1 complaints (although, I will give the writer this, the scene of Gabriel deliberately overfeeding him to cockblock Emily did actually make me laugh a bit). Also ... the Ukrainian women stereotype was painful.

      @rhythmicelegance4670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That’s true. Even when I wore sneakers there, the fashion sort without much support, my feet felt nearly fractured by the end of the day after so much walking! I couldn’t begin to imagine the suffering that would occur as a result of wearing heels for as long. On the Metro I saw an older man of about 60, who wore a super stylish outfit including a pristine hat and sneakers. Many residents wore sneakers, but he stood out for me the most.

One of the best reviews of this show and season I've seen. Thanks for expressing your thoughts which I think a lot of us wholeheartedly agree with. Glad you touched on the negative stereotype for the Ukrainian character and that "fashion" show at the end! In no way believable or interesting (and thanks for mentioning that all the "looks" were basically the same). They used Versailles as a background for this "merde"! Oh la la, no way! So many things wrong and thanks for your insightful and sweet review! Love your videos.
p.s. and yes if Emily loved fashion, why on earth would she have Alfie rip it off? They really didn't build any chemistry, passion, urgency in this pairing and, for me, there was a lack of any kind of buy in to the relationship.

One thing that bothered me about the fashion show ending was the models’ clothes. It kind of reminded me of that Moschino collection and Savage x Fenty because of the Rococo dresses and dancing models of various body types. But like you said the designer was better dressed than the models! Like leagues better. Not to mention Pierre’s rivalry outfit was also better than anything the models wore as well. Also some of the shape wear didn’t match the models’ skin tones! Like that beige is supposed to be nude right? So why put it on a dark skinned model? Also give more room for the models to dance than that tiny runway if you’re showing the clothes’ mobility. I’m sure there were budget reasons for these decisions but maybe cut Emily’s hat budget to make it make sense?
(I’d cut out the gloves but since Patricia Fields is making money off the biker gloves I know that’s not gonna happen.)
