I can remember hearing this for the first time 'live' when the Bluecoats were sharing a practice area with us, and being jealous of their sound. It went right through you~
I've always felt some of the kids didn't realize it at the time. One of the guys in the snareline even looks ticked when he hears what sounds like booing. Maybe not.
That crowd gave a 30+ second standing ovation after Autumn Leaves. Also notable is the creation of the standard "bloo" chant! What an iconic performance. And that guy totally NAILED the second sop solo!
This was my only year in but an awesome year, I left for the Navy almost as soon as I got home after Madison...But we worked so hard but some great memories I remember the crowd cheering so loud it was like a tidal wave of sound hit us on the field, there was some great shows that year Phantom did the "Nutcracker", Blue Devils had an amazing show too they closed with Spanish Dreams
In all the years marched and followed Drum Corps this, in my mind, was always the longest mid-show Ovation that I can remember. Autumn Leaves was always a huge hit with the fans and the interesting variations that followed in the late 80's receive this same adoration and approval from the crowds.
difference between a marching band and drum core , that fist bump would never happen so to counting out loud and talking ,always found that stuff to be sloppy on the field watching DCI at the local bowl
That's the corps I was in (1987 Sky Ryders). I played contra-bass. The audio of the show is available for download on DCI(dot)org. I don't think they have the 'Over the Rainbow' from when we left the field, but it might be on the DVD of the entire finals performances. I like how the Bluecoats continue to use 'Autumn Leaves' as their signature song~
The first soloist in Autumn Leaves was Frank Pasquerella(not in this video). The first soloist in this video is Jeff Wilt, who is joined by Steve Wyclaw.
The part at the start where they transition to a louder more out there melody to "Autumn Leaves", and addition of the color guard it's truly just dope lol gives me goosebumps
it's true, but also, autumn leaves (and the intent to entertain) is still very much part of the corps' fabric. the corps still sings it and plays the ballad portion of the tune every year.
Loved this show. In fact I just downloaded the audio to listen to on the way to Atlanta next week. Too bad the guy couldn't hang on to the double g in the beginning of the song. He was usually a rock that year. Adding snares was a cool design. After this piece the closer was a bit anti-climactic. Thus, the following year they brought Autumn Leaves back as the closer.
@draeke8080 Reading some comments and ya I wish drum corps were still this way... Drum corps was awesome in the 80's and '90's and pretty much everything after 2000; I don't even pay attn anymore 3 valves was cool but electrified instruments etc... Like, what ever happened to your Opener, Concert, Drum solo, Closer, etc now its just garbage to get people to march go EMO!
I admire your intimidation, truly, but the "little wimpy kid" thing just got me. I think the adjectives in order go description then stature. No offense intended. Also, his sounds is like that because this was before the switch to Bb instruments. They were using G bugles at the time, which probably sound different than what you're used to.
but tobifan,.... correct spelling, grammar is a virtue to be learned... when you speak of how "legendary" our family is in coats.... it would really help if you would spell guard, barritone, and maybe even uncle- correctly ;)
I am so lucky that my dad was a part of the bluecoats in this year. I have a video of the entire show from finals. It's absolutely breathtaking.
Blonde ASMR same my dad was there too can you ask him if he remembers Cedric Rogers?
This was my drum instructor from my old school's last year with the Bluecoats, Allen Marshall?
What did your dad play?
So was mine!!
@@faithschanks4997 what did he play?!
"They're not booing!, They're Blooing!" Steve Rondanaro every year since 1987!
Had him say it for me as a joke during band practice :)
29 years later, world champions.
@Micah Lall-Trail Its only at 68
And today they are all between 45 and 51 years of age. And “Autumn Leaves,” is a solidly good memory every time it comes to each one of their minds.
the trumpet soloist fist pumping when he nailed the solo is my favorite thing ever
I can remember hearing this for the first time 'live' when the Bluecoats were sharing a practice area with us, and being jealous of their sound. It went right through you~
And thus began the legendary chant of "Bloooo"
I've always felt some of the kids didn't realize it at the time. One of the guys in the snareline even looks ticked when he hears what sounds like booing. Maybe not.

Considering the poor video quality in later popular years, this is a fantastic video!

What question.... Dan M is that you?
Goosebumps on trumpet duet.
FYI, they’re soprano bugles, not trumpets. Trumpets weren’t allowed on the field until 2003 or so.
@@fl1606Okay NERD
Just messing with you lol
I love the tenor solo. It's so simple but it has a nice groove to it.
2:45 aw poor cymbal XD
and this is the tune that made me join the drum and bugle corps....'87... yup, that's the year....will always be in my mind and my heart.
3:15 better than the wink.
"The wink" before the wink happened
One of the greatest DCI soloist
Kind of ashame there no video of the actual Autumn Leaves, which was preformed right before this part of the show.
A few years late but if you look up Bluecoats 1987 there's a video that plays through Autumn leaves though it doesn't have the video just the audio
Solos are still perfectly audible on top of the already existent screaming. Who needs mics? Definitely not Bloo 87.
Thank you for sharing this historical moment.

The ovation following "Requiem" from Suncoast Sound in 84 was long as well.
God bless Mr. P
this is actually a pretty cool show
I played baritone in the '99 version. always gave me goosebumps.. i tear up every time i listen to it now. GO BLOOOOOO!!!!
I enjoy the "98 season version as well.
Wow! That's a really good recording for that time! like 25 years ago.
And so Bloooo began!!!
Great horn line,
I love the fist pump at 3:09! It has become iconic in a way.
difference between a marching band and drum core , that fist bump would never happen so to counting out loud and talking ,always found that stuff to be sloppy on the field watching DCI at the local bowl

God I'd love to be a percussion caption head in the 80s'.
i performed this(a severely watered down version) with a jazz group in our school talent school and won first place
Ah just delicious Drum & Bugle corps purity!
that snare is soo cool hahahaha
Still the boss Coats piece...
The first soloist in Autumn Leaves was Frank Pasquerella(not in this video). The first soloist in this video is Jeff Wilt, who is joined by Steve Wyclaw.
I'd have to say this is real drum corps. I wish drum corps go back to this way.
God I hope the bluecoats recreate this or at least play this tidbit as an encore
They still to this day always play Autumn leaves in their Encore.
hey bro guess what
Imagine performing infont of that many people
absolutely, it was an odd year; but Suncoast the next year just got hammered and was one of the best shows out there; i still hum my part sometimes
The part at the start where they transition to a louder more out there melody to "Autumn Leaves", and addition of the color guard it's truly just dope lol gives me goosebumps
There's Frank! @3:37
@tobifan3 and @officersheriff, F yeah our dad did! Big Wallyyyy!
And that wasn't even the closer.
😊
they've come such a long waym
it's true, but also, autumn leaves (and the intent to entertain) is still very much part of the corps' fabric. the corps still sings it and plays the ballad portion of the tune every year.
i wish someone would post the 1997 version. man that was awesome. or maybe 99 bluecoats:)
2:30 did someone drop a stick?
Go Blooo 93 Euph awesome
Top 7? More like Top 5 loved your show PR Org '88-90 Suncoast/Magic '91
Im surprisingly kinda diggin that snare sound
Is that the West Side Story Mambo in the beginning?

That's my band director...NBD.

Even in 87 the basses kick ass lol
@JessOnTheRun ... you're kidding right?
That's my band director!!!!
Whoa, I can't believe your dad played barraton on this hornline.
3:47 I swear I saw this guy in SCV 1989.
was the allumi soloist the same guy?!?!?
Bloo-oo-oo
Did anyone notice a snare drop his stick during the drum break right at the end?
I did when I was on the end of the snare line and saw out of the corrner of my eye and said OMG... I can't believe this dude.!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
That's my band director!
Rest in peace cymbal player
@MaximumTrollingAvail ha ha ha, I noticed after I posted, I feel a little dumb now. lol
I admire your intimidation, truly, but the "little wimpy kid" thing just got me. I think the adjectives in order go description then stature. No offense intended.

My former band director...
Was the first soloist Frank Pasquerella, by chance?
Walt Omiecinski rules!
Do you think that miles davis saw this show?
Were the bluecoats all male back then?
@MaximumTrollingAvail oaky I'm trying to avoid stupid questions, but is the person your pointing out a man or a woman?
but tobifan,.... correct spelling, grammar is a virtue to be learned... when you speak of how "legendary" our family is in coats.... it would really help if you would spell guard, barritone, and maybe even uncle- correctly ;)
ANyone know where the snare member yells out "Bloo?"
The origin of BLOOOO
ummm...what? Holy crap...
Ugh. 60's and 70's drum corp please!
Kimberly Bags getting footage from then is almost impossible. the camera quality and sound quality would sound so bad.
