    [Algae in CUET-PG 2023]
    ________________________________________
    Topics Covered:
    a. Economic Importance of Algae: Red rust disease of tea leaves, Chlorellin.
    b. Life cycle of Cladophora, Oedogonium, Vaucheria, General character of Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Phaeophyceae.
    c. Types of chloroplasts in Algae.
    ________________________________________
    Explanation:
    1. Red rust disease of tea leaves is caused by ‘Cephaleuros’, interestingly which is a member of green algae.
    2. Chlorellin, contained in Chlorella, acts like a natural antibiotic.
    3. In unfavorable condition, in the thallus of Vaucheria several cysts form. Sometimes cysts also divide into many uninucleate segments; at this stage the thallus looks like another alga called 'Gongrosira'; therefore, this stage is called as 'Gongrosira stage'.
    4. Postelsia palmaeformis, also known as the sea palm or palm seaweed, is a species of kelp and classified within brown algae.
    _____
Explanation: Chloroplasts in algae can vary in shape. Some shapes include:
Cup-shaped: Volvox and Chlamydomonas; H-shaped: Chlamydomonas biciliata; Girdle-shaped: Ulothrix; Spiral: Spirogyra; Reticulate: Oedogonium; Stellate: Zygnema; Discoid: Most other groups
    ______
Explanation: Thallus in Vaucheria is branched, coenocytic and siphonaceous.
    ________
    Explanation:
    1. A heterocyst is a nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial cell that has undergone differentiation.
    2. Oedogonium is easily identifiable distinctive rings present at the apical ends of certain cells that are known as the cap cells.
    3. A frustule is the hard and porous cell wall or external layer of diatoms.
    4. Aegagropilous forms: occurrence of unattached spherical (aegagropilous) populations of the green alga (e.g. Cladophora).
