Thanks for this ! So helpful and easy to understand. Would be great if you can do one on current, tides and wind and how that effects kitesurfing.

I'm amazed this humble video is managed to properly explain some aerodynamic principles that wrongly explained in other "proffesional" aviation videos.
That venture part at the beginning is top notch!

As always an excellent and informative video with really useful tips to help keep us safe on the water but I would like to add a little bit about an accident that I had that I hope others might find a useful safety lesson:
I was recently kiting on a beach on Tresco on the Isles of Scilly. All looked good with a good forecast consistent with the steady 23knots of directly onshore breeze and plenty of open water offshore clear of Bryher. The only downside I could see was that the tide was high so not much beach downwind but a quick reconnaissance showed nothing hard - just big soft sand dunes.
I had a great time until a minor fall that resulted in the kite looping low and me being pulled onto the shore. This is when it got interesting. I can’t remember much about it but my wife reports that the kite suddenly shot up into (what I am pretty sure now after much research) was 30 plus knots of steep upwards ‘slope lift’. Apparently this took me a good 20 to 30 feet above the top of the dune. This wasn’t the end of it though. Once the kite passed the top of the dune it ended up in the down draught and I was dropped like a stone. Luckily the sand was soft and sinky (knee deep to walk in) but I was still knocked unconscious for a few seconds, waking to find myself baffled as to where I was, and why I was there with my kite in a place with no wind whatsoever.
Lesson to learn: taking into account downwind wind conditions can sometimes be extremely important.

Great last part, but the effect of thermal under a White cloud on wind strength and direction is not explained correctly. Thermal single cloud sucks air up under the cloud. This means air at ground level goes toward the cloud from all directions. So for a White cloud passimg overhead wind will drop before cloud reaches you, will get to average Speed under the cloud and then Increased after cloud passes overhead. Every glider pilot knows that. Obviously this is only for a single cloud in blue sky with other clouds May be 1 km away. It probably means that a significant drop of wind before a vertical cloud is a bad early sign of coming thermal lift lofting conditions and a wind Increase after cloud passes over.

Congratulations for such a comprehensive video. 😎 I better realize why it is so tricky to practice kite on a small lake far from sea, surrounded by country side, hills, canyons and forests 🥴
Just one question : you highlighted the influence of obstacle’s height for turbulences. Do you know the ratio of influence for the width of these obstacles : e.g on the rear side of a tree of 10m versus on the rear side of a 100m group of trees?

Hello Nicolas. I don't think there's a formula for that, and I can't find any research done on it. I just know from experience. I've kited around a lone tree on a small sand bank and found almost no wind shadow (the wind was fine within 1x the tree's height). But I've also kited downwind of a larger island full of trees and found the wind affected almost kilometer downwind (about 100x the height of the trees). So it's quite a contrast.

@@kitesurfcollege Theoretically there exist equations: the Navier-Stokes equations. However, they are very complicated and cant be solved easily. In most cases they also cannot be solved exactly but only approximately by using numerics. And even in that case the solution only holds for the specific problem setting.
I specialized in fluid dynamics in my studies and also don't know about an instant formula for the influence of the width to the flow field.
