    One of the worst experiences of my life was when I was in military service and we had this 200km 5day ski march in complete wilderness. We didn't have tents so we had to build these igloo like snow structures called "lumikammi" to sleep in. Some nights we stopped only for couple of hours to sleep so we didn't have time to build those so we just built "rakovalkea" and slept in our sleeping bags next to those. It was something like -35c to -42c during the whole trip

    I was in the Canadian military, we slept in -40, no clothes on, just a military sleeping bag and nothing else, no heat, our clothes and boots inside the bag with us and we never got cold except our faces, this is how you are supposed to sleep in freezing weather!!!!!!

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      In -40, you had the bivvy, the hood and the two down filled bags. I have that sleep system myself. On that trip I only uhad the outer bag with me, as both the bags are rather bulky and it was "only" -27c/-30c. I had another thinner inner bag. I was not cold. I had a good fire close by, so not a problem. If I had to sleep without a fire, I might just had stripped my clothes off, as the body heat of course heat up the bags better.
      Anyway, I was wearing old-school wool trousers and a heavy wool coat, which provides good warmth. Overnight, the wind changed direction and I got smoked pretty bad. The reason I mentioned that "I have slept better." The Canadian bags are good. The only sleep system I have tried, which actually performs as rated. One bag and a bivvy will do for -20c.

      @@MetalAriel I grew up in Nebraska. Our first winter there my parents didn't know they needed to watch the news before sending us to school each morning. My brother and I walked almost a mile to school, only to find all the doors locked. It was -35 F (including wind chill), and the schools closed once it got below about -5 or -10.
      The news there also reminds you of the importance of covering up. They would announce the temperature, then tell you how long it will take for exposed skin to freeze solid at that temperature. I don't miss it.

    I once tried a scenario where I would experience being lost or injured in the forest at sunset at -30 C. I did not have fancy equipment, My tarp shelter sucked, my fire would not catch and by midnight I was really cold. Would it have been real life I would have had to stay awake and exercise lightly all night to stay alive. This is harder than it looks!

    • @fanta4897
      @fanta4897 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You staying awake and exercising made me realize something. If you get into situation when you don't have enough protection from cold during night and when you have to survive multiple days or longer, would it be feasible to stay awake during night and sleep during the day (that is if the area isn't one of those when night lasts for several months)?

      To be honest it was only an exercise, I just got out of the woods and went back inside.
      Theoretically, If there is sun, it would be feasible but that would leave very little time to gather food, water, firewood or improve camp. Plus it would be quite exhausting at night to jog around in the dark.

    In the 1960s I tried sleeping fully clothed in the German snow in a sleeping bag and air mattress and no fire. I got very cold. In the middle of the night I took off my outer layer of shirt and pants and surprise I got very warm. I think the cloths was soaking in the heat and leaving the bag cold after I went to only under cloths and soxs the feather filled sleeping bag was able to warm up and let me sleep very warm. Best to keep cloths in the bag with you so they will be warm in the morning and you can also put on your cloths before unzipping the bag. I don't know about modern sleeping bags.
