  • The fold down counter balance stairs is hinged on one of the top threads, so this is the pivot point. By using 4 pulleys, a counter weight and a wire ripe, the stairs folds up and down effortlessly.

I like it. Most of these that I have been looking at at not well built as far as the stairs themselves. Yours looks rock solid. I liked your simple solution to keeping them down and where the counter weight is placed. Thanks for sharing!

That it moves up so quickly suggests he could maybe slightly adjust the weights a bit. Not to keep it down, just to have it go up slower. This would make it come down easier and feel like it wasn’t running away from him so much.

This is brilliant, thank you, it shortcutted a project I'm working on here in my place to replace an old basement stairs and saved me a lot of time :)
Looks like you sourced this from an old basement stair cutout with a stiffener :)
    Nice work!

maybe have metal on the bottom of the lowest step and an electro magnet embedded in the floor or vice-versa to hold the stairs down and just switch off the magnet for the stairs to rise.

A question the video doesn't resolve:
    1) When the weights are all being used
    2) a person has climbed stairs to the upper level
    3) the stairs have resumed their upper position
HOW does the person get the stairs to descend, again, so they can return to the lower level? I *cannot* figure this out! Can anyone suggest how this would be done? Thanks!

You can see that when he steps on the stairs 0:27 , his weight offsets the counterbalance, which causes the stairs to come back down. I love this idea! I'm planning on something similar for my shop but with a cleaner(hidden) bottom, so it's not noticeable when it's closed.

Doesn’t look like it forms a tight seal while in the up position. Otherwise great concept
