@@blahdelablah woke does mean being aware of inequalities. However, it is used in a derogatory way to discredit those being aware of inequalities and progressive ideas. 'political correctness' is used in the same way to discredit being aware/taking action of inequalities and for progressive ideas. Both are used intentionally this way to stigmatise the word and thus, stigmatise being associated with anything that is apart of progressive ideas, activism, movements etc. It's simply to discredit so they can be ignored from the beginning. So because of that, the definition is changing because of how it is being used. A replacement for the original use of the word 'woke' would probably be progressive, 'being progressive'. There's maybe another word out there which is better suited though (can't think off the top of my head)
@@ringo1888 Thanks for your comment. To be clear, I understand that the word "woke" before it was twisted by its critics had a different meaning, my point with drawing parallels with political correctness is to point out that it's used by critics as an alternative for "political correctness". In other words, the criticism of "wokeness" existed before "woke" was a term, it's not a new phenomenon just a rebranding.
6:42 "... to me it implies a level of intolerance to people who have different views from you. And I think we've reached a stage now where we can't have any form of debate without people piling on to people who might have a different opinion than them." So woke came as a response to the original wokeness of conservatism generally which regarded and still regards, especially LGBTQIA+ as non existent, and invalid of rights or respect in society. Which also extends to religious and ethnic minorities, and anyone of the political opposition which might not share conservative views. In other words, conservatives have always piled onto these people and they still are today and nothing has changed, and the (mis) appropriation of the term woke is really just a continuation of that dynamic, of the established social hierarchical status quo and elite socially and politically subjugating these underclass forces. Ya don't say...
"wokeism is a distortion of historical reality" no it's just people who aren't English say how they feel about English colonialism. The Irish with persecution and famine, the Scottish with the Highland clearances and invasions, the Welsh with cultural repression and exploitation of their resources.
Isn't that a good thing? You don't want people with exactly the same opinions. Not in the conservatives, not in labour etc. That's called an echo chamber.
The word "woke" is African-American vernacular for being awake to racial prejudice and discrimination. It's quite clear that the people in this video haven't a clue what it means, because they're too lazy to find out. Right-wingers have now turned the original meaning of the word on its head. They don't know what it means, but they'll repeat it parrot fashion, and apply it to anything they see as left-wing. British right-wingers use it because it's just another trendy American right-wing term they've picked up from the media or a colleague, a prime example being Piers Morgan! If you use the word as a slur against another person or a certain group of people, then you're being a racist, such as, calling the Black Lives Matter movement woke, or being discriminatory when applied to something like the many LGBT movements. Another word that the right-wing has taken completely out of context is the American term, "snowflake"!
None of my children use the word "woke", they have never even heard of it. They are all in their late twenties. Then again, they are mature adults. You can't say that about the Tories or readers of the DM/DT.
That’s strange because I heard the word woke the past 15 years from black American tv shows, film, and mostly American rap music. I’ll never forget the day when I went to visit my mother, she had radio 4 on, and they were discussing ‘wokeness’. By the time your parents find out the slang, it’s lost its cool. The word went mainstream in the worst possible way. 😅
@@nameisamine A valid point, the word has now become a term for small-minded people to sneer at. Twenty years ago, it was "political correctness". Some things never change.
The Conservative conference looks a lot like those larping conventions (whatever they're called?) Where people dress up as Wizards and orcs and all that crac. Except they're dressed as 1800s cotton mill owners, and things like that.
Woke as I understad it refers to being aware of social injustice, its causes and its impacts - It is IMO a positive term. The issue is that it requires conservatives to address systemic issues. Conservativism seeks to maintain the illusion of meritocracy and so anything that challenges that view is in their eyes a negative - hence a disdain for woke. They use it as a pejorative when in fact it is a badge of honour.
The Central Dogma of Woke-ology is that only ‘oppression’ can cause inequalities of outcome. Corollary: all but the most unfortunate groups are oppressors. It is this logic to which critics of ‘woke’ typically object. To insist that any inequality of outcome necessarily implies inequality of opportunity is equivalent to insisting on equality of outcome: since success is a sure sign of sin. But meritocracy simply cannot guarantee equality of outcome.
You know I have asked this question of people before only to watch them flounder. It’s simple just treat other people with the respect you want them to treat you. It’s not difficult, nor should it cause anyone to feel uncomfortable or scared. Basically for them it’s about being not being allowed to treat people with disrespect and to being allowed to think of other people as lesser. Simple example in the Conservative party , Sunak despite being a sane person, not much of a qualification for PM, did not stand a hope in hell of being elected by the Conservative party members. Personally I am delighted as Truss has imploded the Conservative party wonderfully well , I just wish she could have done it without causing such hardship for so many people. Sunak would have taken longer. However 13 years of Tory leadership would have lead to the parties inevitable collapse. It’s a lot more difficult to say what the opposite of being woke is because it’s so omnipresent and prevalent amongst a certain section of society. However given how the Conservatives have so royally screwed themselves we have the perfect example of what happens when you don’t treat others with that respect that you yourself would wish.
It really annoys me when people flip between using "woke" as an adjective and a noun. In fact, it just shows how badly understood and inappropriately used it is.
7.25 tells you everything you need to know. Can you give an example? "I don't want to get into that debate, because I don't want to go down that track." Woke is a word for ideas you don't like that would make you look like a bigot if you actually explicitly came out against them. So they just say "woke" because they're too ashamed to specify any further.
This reminds me of those wonderful vox pops in "The Day Today" with Chris Morris when he was asking folk about "the letter of the law", people just rambled on and he would try to pin them down to such an extent that one guy defined the letter of the law as "L" 🤣
I agree that this is what the interviews reminded me of too, but the unrepentant pedant that I am is compelled to point out that the letter of the law response that vox pop came up with was "J", which is even funnier because it doesn't even make as much sense as "L" does. th-cam.com/video/yWWzFwDTVz4/w-d-xo.html
If, “It doesn’t mean anything to,” you, how can you know that you disagree with it? You cannot disagree with something unless you know what it is! 🤷♂️
The guy at 2.15 Conservatism is "pride in ones country." When did the Conservatives gain the monopoly on national pride?? Just like most Tories, they have no idea what they stand for.
It is a strawman used by the right to slur something with a progressive edge which may offend their ideology. This reminds me of the term "cultural Marxism", which was incredibly frustrating. I remember googling it, expecting to see a wikipedia page that offered some kind of "definition", possibly based on the work of some right wing thinker, like Jordan Peterson. In fact, this was a few years ago and Jordan Peterson got intellectually battered by Zizek around this time (great fun - even if you don't like Zizek, there are some great moments and Peterson is exposed as the fraud that he is). As far as I know, he was one of those right wing "intellectuals" that used the term, but of course, it had no meaning. It was frustrating because, as a student of Marxism, it didn't make any sense to me, even in mere semantic terms (is there a current of Marxism that is somehow "un-cultural"?). Eventually, it did get a Wikipedia page and it rightfully calls the term what it is: a conspiracy theory. Not saying that Wikipedia is the bastion of correct ideology - far from it. It was satisfying to see it called for what it is though. "Woke" reminds me of that, in that it can be used to slur anything that a right wing chud may not like, without requiring any kind of analysis or explanation.
The only thing weaker than vox pop journalism is partisan vox pop journalism. All it ever proves is how inarticulate the average person is, and how widespread is stupidity.

Thats what it should be. But its morphed into exaggeration of issues, without real facts, to use as a political tool to generate hatred.
I'm not saying all Tories are bigots, but why are many bigots Tories?
5:30 I wouldn't care what Tories SAY, it's what they DO, that's the problem.
Hypocrisy is a conservative cornerstone. It's everpresent in everything they say and do. It's their nature. The mark of the beast.
Its this kind of political hatred which history has told us is the real danger.
Calling other political ideas evil.
One thing I will never put up with is intolerance.
@J did you recognise the joke?
@J i am trying to ascertain whether you believe in any form of social responsibility at all other than your concept of your rights. Out of curiosity.
"culturally aware" which is how I think of it.
In my view the term "woke" may have had different origins, but now it's just a rebranding of "political correctness".
And I think we've reached a stage now where we can't have any form of debate without people piling on to people who might have a different opinion than them."
So woke came as a response to the original wokeness of conservatism generally which regarded and still regards, especially LGBTQIA+ as non existent, and invalid of rights or respect in society.
According to the dictionary it means being aware of social issues, seems sensible to me
"wokeism is a distortion of historical reality" no it's just people who aren't English say how they feel about English colonialism. The Irish with persecution and famine, the Scottish with the Highland clearances and invasions, the Welsh with cultural repression and exploitation of their resources.
They agree about as much as flat earthers agree on what the world actually looks like
Isn't that a good thing? You don't want people with exactly the same opinions. Not in the conservatives, not in labour etc. That's called an echo chamber.
@@mr_slidey echo Chambers are bad, but delusion and denial are worse.I have yet to see a flat earther set up a satellite network, as a quick example!
@jgtemperton
Why do you say that they’re uneducated, some of these answers were fairly well thought out ?
Good to see they're all enraged by something they are all clueless about.
These people have never complained about disabled people having mixed loos for an awful long time.
All these people freely speaking about being “unable” to speak freely
They've got it all; different heights, colours, styles... But not socio-economic backgrounds! That's the key takeaway.
conservatives believe woke doesn't mean anything, and yet one of their most powerful members Suella Braverman won't stop harping on about it...
Whenever someone brings up gender neutral bathrooms in a debate, simply inform them that they have locks on the doors.
You should ask Tories to describe somnambulism, not wokeness, in your next video. It seems to be more their terrain.
I’d urge people to look up the definition of the word before misusing it in the way they do.
So many different people saying absolutely nothing!
Should the gentleman in the blue striped shirt who's worried people might kill him perhaps be in a care home and not out alone roaming the streets?
They say "woke" because it sounds much more insulting than "enlightened".
Besides that, they can't spell enlightened.
"So LGBDQ right...." Good grief
Why would anyone have a problem with ‘mixed loos’?
We’ve had unisex toilets for 50+ years
We are in safe hands.

Tolerance, which they don’t have
You know I have asked this question of people before only to watch them flounder.
2:25 Omg, this chap🤦♂️
7.25 tells you everything you need to know. Can you give an example? "I don't want to get into that debate, because I don't want to go down that track."
Woke is a word for ideas you don't like that would make you look like a bigot if you actually explicitly came out against them. So they just say "woke" because they're too ashamed to specify any further.
"I don't know what it is or what it means or who it describes, but I know that it's BAD!"
I mean this just confirms what was already known.
This is absolutely pitiful. They should all be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
The guy at 2.15 Conservatism is "pride in ones country."
When did the Conservatives gain the monopoly on national pride??
All it ever proves is how inarticulate the average person is, and how widespread is stupidity.

to be woke is to be sensitive to social and political injustice, however what is up for opinion is what each individual would consider a social and political injustice its quite a broad term
Justice is just another social construct what one would consider justice may not be the same as another. having a democracy tries to figure out what MOST people consider the correct cause of action and agian this becomes a problem when the democratic system is taken advantage of by people who wish to transfer wealth and power to a select few while gaslighting everybody else
