I can't articulate how much I enjoy this podcast. Always learning so much, always covering everything from the poetic to the profane. What more can you ask for?
Ed went to the most prestigious prep school in America as a legacy admit, the most prestigious college in America, and got his first job working for a guy on a short list of the people in the world he wanted to work for most. That is a wildly successful upbringing without any struggle, at least on paper. Truly, a charmed life.
Ed is impressive. But he also was born on first base, educated to second base, and had family/connection put him on third base. He thinks he hit a home run. For the rest of us - and our kids - who don't get these advantages, its not the same. A lot of very bright folks could do the job of CEO for a Fortune 500 successfully, but never get the door opened for them (actually don't even know the door exists). Let's think about this a bit.
@@IV9000 I think he’s smart enough to realize that he didn’t hit a home run. He alluded to it with his family friend getting him the job off a personal rather than professional reference (lol). Also, work hard enough so your kids have the advantages you never did - AFAIK, Ed isn’t aristocracy - he comes from an academic family who did the same. (Edit: Never mind, his family donated a building at the prep school ahahaha we are no better than Europe)

Scott is heroic and his origin story relatable and inspiring. Gives hope to all those that come from humble beginnings. Ed is great and together a stellar team. Loads of comments about Ed’s privileged background and they remind me of an answer that Roxanne Gay gave at a book signing. Someone asked her what she attributed her success to having overcome racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. to achieve her lofty status. Roxanne’s answer was that she was supposed to be a success as her parents were wealthy, she went to Phillip’s Exeter, Yale and other universities. “Why aren’t you more successful?” would be a better question was her response.
This is hands down the best of all ProfG segments, and I watch religiously. Ed is a fantastic role model for young people, and the young and (comparatively) old viewpoints expressed here complement each other very much. My wife, however, is extremely disappointed given Ed's new news toward the end there, and since we have a 16 year old daughter and she repeatedly refers to Ed as her son-in-law to-be....seriously. I was really interested in the discussion about influential books. Glad to hear that Scott, who's only two months younger than I am, was equally moved by Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War" as a young man.
Watching Scott listen to Ed was a bit cathartic for me. My oldest is 15 and what he is saying is what i want and what i fear. It was great insight and i really appreciate it.
Thank you for saying the quip about falling in love with your kids. As a young father, I felt awful not having the immediate lovey dovey Hollywood feelings for my newborns. Rationally, I loved them but the life changing stress and, frankly, lack of sleep made these types of feelings difficult to achieve. It was only made worse by being in the bubble with a wife who just instinctively oozed those feelings. I only recently heard about the "catch up" men have to do to get there. Women have an intense biological 9 month head start. I now have young kids with personalities and i would quite literally die for them if necessary. It took time but for me watching them form into unique people made me love them at a depth i never thought i could love anything. My wife recently had an ah-ha moment when we tossed around the possibity of adopting a child. She was concerned about not having that inmediate intense love. It was only after I made the comparison to my POV with our kids that it registered for her. I think scott talking about this would be a great service to new dads who wrongly feel alone and guilty.
Ed, I am more like Scott and I am his age (and a lot less successful) but you are in a weird way, the anchor of the show with your great analysis, comments and general demeanor. This is a great show ultimately because of the symbiosis between you two.
I always enjoy your podcasts, the fun ribbing you do on Ed, such a young man of good character, he plays the "straight man role" really well! I'm the same age as Scott, didn't end up the same success, by far, he always has great nuggets of wisdom in all his talks!
I just listened to Prof G about the discussion on the developments with noncompetes. As a practicing business lawyer, I think it would be awesome for you to comment on non-solicitations and elaborate a little bit more on confidentiality agreements, and how this move to make noncompete illegal, does not open up the wild wild west of employees being able to pillage a prior employers business. it would be awesome. Also to hear an explanation to distinguish how all this applies to employees versus independent contractors. in my experience in working with people day today - your average person doesn’t understand the difference between a noncompete and a non-solicit or confidentiality agreements and how those concepts often overlap. For example, I had a conversation with someone the other day who has a contract to agreement with a non-solicit and no noncompete - and she asked if the agreement was no longer enforceable. so until I explained to her the difference and how it applied to her, she was operating under a big misunderstanding
Love the pod, and love Ed! But I’d love to hear if Ed has had any actual struggles (if any…?) - sounds very privileged but has worked hard to get where he is, but I get the feeling he’s had 50% of the work done for him. Love Scott so much, he’s so open particularly about his “privileges” (white man born in the 60s USA). His commitment to democratising wealth creation is great for people like me who didn’t have a lot growing up.
Love the humdrum way he normalizes atheism as a positive view of life. 100% support & embrace this perspective. Saying this many places invokes negative responses, so he’s walking the walk. Appreciate the bravery!
Scott really couldn't tell Ed he was proud of him. If Scott wants others to be able to come to him if they are vulnerable, he should begin by reciprocating that he can do the same.
Ed was very tactful in not pulling out ("signalling") his Coutts Silk Card. The wealthiest man I know (congenital billions accumulated over centuries) uses an ordinary Visa card that does not show his full name. I've seen him use it only once. The bank that issued it exists largely to serve his family as a custodial company. As he well knows, Ed has the one thing in abundance that virtually guarantees his financial future. That, of course, is time. I hope he doesn't squander that irreplaceable asset by not maximizing its benefit now. Oh, and one word of advice: Prenup.
Is that really what you took from that? His family friend got him a job off a personal reference alone. I took: work hard so your kids can be born to rich and well-connected parents and hope they don’t screw it up.

Well, yes, I too realised, he did not take that well that a 26 year old plans for his next step somehow, and that this is just an episode. It seemed, Prof.G found it a bit disappointing, so he would not say how proud he is on Ed , which he actually is, and very much so.
Agree. Wonder if he feels Ed ought to show a bit more loyalty to someone who (regardless of what he says) hired him entirely on the say-so of someone else rather than any perception of his merits, maybe.
Ed, if you liked Homers Odyssey, you should definitely read The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. He examines the heroes story across many cultures.
I listened to the Elon interview with with Jordan Peterson and he didn’t not say “my son is dead to me.” He said that when you transition gender your old identity is considered dead (hence the term “dead naming”) so therefore his son is technically dead. The Odyssey is very good. I don't think it's profound to read (the Iliad has some profoundness and relevance to it - war, loss, pride, grief, revenge) but it's incredibly important in Greek and Roman history - like you will understand the stories of a lot of Greek or Greek inspired art. It's quite a fun book, Odysseus is a bit of a dick - he's a chad for sure, but not a role model. Listen to it oas an audio book - it's very long, and it's very repetitive. You probably won't find the 20 hours time to read a pretty challenging and repetitive book, but if you listen to it whilst doing your daily exercise you'll get through it in 2-8 weeks. Strongly recommending reading the Iliad too, especially to Ed - the Iliad was basically the Bible of ancient Greece - Alexander the Great always carried a copy with it.
