The Lessons of the Loess Plateau shows how an ancient civilization failed because they degraded their ecosystem functions. This parallels many if not all of the original cradles of civilization. But recently the Chinese People are showing that it is possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems.
Why haven't I ever seen this before?! This is literally awe inspiring.
We do the same things 30 years ago.
This is awesome, our gran gran grankids will receive a better planet that we have neglected and abused.

If China tries to go further west and develop more arable land, since there is less pollution there, it is possible that heavy metal pollution can be avoided in the future. But there is a problem. The land in the west are not so arable as it seems because of short water supply. Although there has been an effort to transport large amount of water from Tibetan plateau to Northeast China, irrigation along the way is not as easy, as you need a network of canals to make it happen.
Heavy metal contamination is a deadly serious problem in the Eastern China, that makes 80% of the underground water non-potable. Some even has a bad taste.
The natural detoxification process takes about a millennium.... And within a century the size population of China will shrink to less than a half. Thank to Chairman Mao Zedong
