    This is a fine moment in his long career. John Cale is a genius. Just downloaded 'Black Acetate." Even his newer albums have such merit. His discography is erratic but if an Artist stays stagnant creatively they just fade away. John Cale always surprises, much like Mark Lanegan, he never settles for the status quo. If you only own Paris 1919 and nothing else you may not be a fan.

      @@hans-jurgenromhild863 Sabotage was the first John Cale album that I bought, and it is still one of my favorites. Unlike most of his other albums (at least in the NYC area) Sabotage actually received some commercial radio airplay. Sabotage was recorded live at CBGB, and in a way, it captured a moment of John Cale being recognized by the punk and new wave scene that he had inspired and helped to create. Some of the songs sound paranoid and confrontational, but others are melodic and even gentle. Sabotage has been out of print for some time, but I hope that it gets re-released digitally.

    Who is your favorite Velvet - Lou Reed otr John Cale? Kind of like asking you to pick between John and Paul in the Beatles. I think Lou clearly had the bigger long tern impact, but there's someting about Joh Cale that I always loved. Maybe because I think like a gun.

    • @ForARide
      @ForARide ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Tom Wolfe, though Reed became far more popular, Cale was far more influential. As for the Velvets it was his Classical and Avantgarde background, that made Cale the dominant force in creating their then revolutionary sound. Should have been co-credited for the music, but selfish Reed would have none of that.
      After WL/WH he went on to produce (the latter two) and arrange all three of Nico's lp triology "The Marble Index" (1968), "Desertshore"(1970) and "The End" (1974, with Brian Eno). Nico and Cale laid the foundations of what was later to become Postpunk and Goth, influencing acts such as Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Dead Can Dance or Swans to name a few.
      Furthermore he produced those milestone debut albums by The Stooges (1969), Patti Smith (1975) and The Modern Lovers (1976) which would have a huge impact of what was to follow. He also produced The Happy Mondays, Squeeze, Sham 69, The Jesus Lizard and many more.
      Then Nick Cave must have given Cale a close watch (and listen), Cale's song Sabotage from 1979 sounds like the blueprint to Nick Cave's band The Birthday Party.
      Also The Talking Heads must have listened carefully to Cale's "Leaving It Up To You" from his 1975 lp "Helen Of Troy", surpasses their debut by two years.
      So from a musical perspective Cale was the far more influential musician. His story and status within the history of Rock music still has to be told, John Cale is possibly the greatest unsung hero in Modern music.

      Definitely John Cale is my favourite out of the two of them. Even though Lou Reed was more commercially successful, John was always more talented and creative than Lou and much more diverse. Lou knew this and was always very jealous of him. This is why they were always at loggerheads with each other and couldn't stand each other but that was mainly Lou's attitude towards John. And of course John was better looking than Lou!

    • @ForARide
      @ForARide 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too versatile for most people. Look at AC/DC, their success is based on always providing very similar songs with the same sound. John Csle is the total opposite to that, always rearranging his songs and changing his sounds. That's the genius of John Cale, never to rest on his laurels, always reinventing himself, which is a permanent creative process.
