In Taiwan, we also wear surgical masks when we are sick. It felt so liberating the first time I did it; I didn't have to worry about how ugly I looked with mucus running down my nose and onto my lips. I didn't have to keep wiping my nose every few seconds; I just let my nose drip. I wish America will adapt this practice, because I hate sneezing all over the place, wiping my nose every few seconds, and have strangers give me totally disgusted looks.

I'm British and wore a mask from time to time when working in Japan to see if it made any difference to my pollen allergies. I can't honestly say it helped or didn't help, I don't really know. I didn't like the idea of exhaling onto the mask and inhale the damp air either, it actually felt unclean after an hour or so. Anyway in England, people would wonder what's wrong with you if you wore a mask, you'd be easy to see.

It probably has some small effect in not infecting other people with your germs (Hospital staff wear them to protect the patient not themselves), but there's little or no evidence that the mask benefits the person wearing it in any way. A properly fitted (cone shaped) dust mask may be efficient against pollen, but the flat looped over the ear surgical ones certainly aren't. But if you talk to anyone who has ever worn a proper dust mask they will tell you they're tight, hot and make breathing hard.

Why do we need the "atte" why dont we just use nanika iitaikoto toka arimasu ka? and the answer too, sono shinpai ni nachau "tte" koto nan desu kedo....etc

I wear a mask when riding my bicycle here, in the USA (Virginia Beach, VA) but also, when I am at work. I do maintenance in a restaurant and throughout my shift, I have to take out trash, work with chemicals (cleaning products mostly with the citrus ingredient), walk into a freezer with air that is hazardous enough to choke from if inhaled and customers sneeze. They'll even cough in the lobby where others eat their food... I was informed once however, by my production manager that a customer questioned him about me wearing a mask but, clearly I have a reason for doing so, especially when I cough, sneeze and have a runny nose.

I usually only wear a surgical mask when I'm sick and don't want to infect others but I can't avoid going out. Here in Canada, people look at me weird when they see that, for sure. Lol But if some of them ask why I'm wearing it and they know the reason is out of love for others, then they usually relax and even commend me for doing such a thing. So they will understand if you explain it (although some still think you're weird, but I am so that's okay).
I have really bad pollen allergies but I never wear the mask for that. So I'm sure that's when it would be considered more odd, but again, I still think people would accept it if you explained it. At least here in Toronto, we're used to all kinds of things. Plus we have sections of the city where large amounts of Asians are (China town, Korea Town, and I've heard talk of a Little Tokyo). So around there, I don't think anyone would think twice about it.

That was a great video. Here in australia we never really wear a mask... unless you were perhaps very sick in hospital or working in a dusty environment. I've always wondered if people wearing the masks in japan were sick and not wanting to spread germs or just not wanting to get sick... I wonder how well they work...??... anyway thankyou for the video I understand a little more now 👍
