  • WALK IN RAVELLO, ITALY (Villa Rufolo): This walk starts in the heart of Ravello. Here you can see a complete walking tour of Villa Rufolo showing the wonderful scenery with the Amalfi Coast from above.
Villa Rufolo, Ravello - Amalfi Coast, Italy
The historical and cultural hub of Ravello is the Villa Rufolo, which has a view of Piazza Vescovado.
The villa has a long and colorful history. It was constructed in the 13th century by a wealthy merchant family. In his Decameron, which was released in 1353, Boccaccio, one of the early writers of the Italian Renaissance, included a tale about the villa and its owner.
It was once one of the biggest and priciest mansions on the Amalfi Coast, and rumors of buried treasure there spread.
King Robert II of Naples and other Norman aristocracy attended banquets held by the Rufolo family in the fourteenth century.
    Francis Neville Reid, Sr.
Age and neglect had taken their toll on the villa by the time Scottish botanist Sir Francis Neville Reid visited it in 1851, and many of the rooms were in a state of disrepair. Reid, though, was enamored with the sweeping views and the Moorish buildings. After acquiring the villa, he started a thorough repair of the grounds and the remaining rooms.
    Richard Wagner
The renowned German composer Richard Wagner visited the home in 1880 and was so moved by what he saw that he is credited with saying, "I have discovered Klingsor's garden."
Wagner, who was 67 at the time of his visit, was so moved by his time at Ravello that he wrote the opera Parsifal's second act, which he had been working on for more than 20 years.
He might never have finished the opera if he had not gone to the Villa Rufolo because he passed away three years later.
City of Music Ravello is still home to Wagner's soul today.
The area has earned the moniker "la città della musica," or "the city of music," and for the past several decades, the Villa Rufolo has served as the focal point of an annual summer concert series that includes piano recitals, chamber ensemble performances, and a grand orchestral performance on a stage built over the rugged Amalfi Coast and Mediterranean Sea below.
    Gardens at Villa Rufolo
Visitors from all over the world come to the Villa Rufolo's year-round open gardens and grounds.
The gardens, with their abundance of flowers, have a magical effect to them when set against the sea, the sky, umbrella trees, and the Church of the Annunziata below.
It makes sense why Wagner found them to be so motivating. The house itself has two substantial towers, the largest of which, known as Torre Maggiore, is situated close to a splendid cloister in the Moorish style.
The Villa Rufolo is frequently compared to a scaled-down replica of Spain's iconic Alhambra because of its stunning gardens, Moorish architecture, and inspiring views.
Visit the Villa Rufolo to see for yourself why it is so magical.
