This horse loves it!!! I randomly came across it and he is not a hunter but still a really nice horse who obviously thoroughly loves doing this! Great jump too, looks like a great horse.
Probably because it was the “handy” round… I thought it was unusual too, have never seen this in my decades of riding and watching competitions…. Also not sure why an obvious jumper is being shown as a hunter… yes, he could easily get the spots and clear the course…but zero hunter style, which is a big factor in the optimal derby hunter. Just a bid for the purse, I guess. BTW, I have nothing against jumpers…. They just are a whole different category. Strange to watch when you’re expecting a smooth as silk hunter round and you get tigger instead 😸
@ilovescottymyhorse Why are you posting this on every Thunderbird Hunter Derby video? As rockymtnshow said, out of the 18 horses that competed here, 12 of them where jumpers.
the derby has big purses. it is not uncommon for jumpers to be shown in such classes. but think about it, though this is a polite jumper, imagine a crazed jumper competing agains a nice, fancy hunter. the show hunter will always win :)
I find it interesting when people commenting about "true hunters" and jumpers a such, when the traditional hunter isn't even what we have now. A traditional hunter isn't one that's quite around the course and then explosive over jumps; he's a foxhunter. He might be a little more "up" and he jumps well, but the pace hunters use today would never be a suitable foxhunter, which is what the classes are modeled after.

Does anyone know why the last jump was jumped inhand?

There are things that a jumper can learn in the hunter ring and vice versa. The rider could either be doing this for his benefit or the horse's.
guys he is riding a jumper it doesnt matter in hunter derbies a hunter will ride it like a jumper course, more forward thats why its called a derby..

@ilovescottymyhorse your not aware of this "Hunter derbys" are basicly jumper derbys but more formal. so.. SAHUT UP.
He seems to ride with a really closed hip. Not just this video, because it is a derby, so its more forward.. Idk.. LOL
