Music of Salil Chaudhary is catchy. Every song is hummable. Overall a great movie.
Madhumati is a great movie but it was not ahead of its times. It was superhit. When something is ahead of its times people often fail to appreciate it. Jaagte Raho, Mera Naam Joker, Kaagaz ke Phool, etc were ahead of their time.
What a movie🙏 Dilip Kumar was way ahead of his time... He just made the characters so strong with his presence that we are convinced to go with his flow... First he was curious traveller, then an honest manager, then a brave man (fights for poor, saves the boy from pran and confronts him), then a lover (killed the role❤️😍), then a sad man who mourns for his love and then a man who seeks revenge from the killer. So many shades in just one movie, it's more than wow... This movie held the record of highest grossing movie for 37 years❤️❤️❤️
I dont know why people say madhuabala ji was the most beautiful. It was also vyjayanthimala ji. She had a perfect round face with a classic indian look. Madhubala had a Hollywood look. I have a scary theory about Madhumati (spoilers) 5:02 - The palace exudes an eerie atmosphere - might just be the rain and the storm 8:41 - You distinctly hear the scream of a woman and again at 9:45 9:12 - You hear ghostly anklets...as if someone is gently treading around 9:59 - You hear the sobbing of a lady 10:30 - The storm or some other force, drops the antagonist's portrait There is completely a supernatural element to all these scenes - you could further argue that the storm and the shutdown of the road might have been engineered to bring Devinder to the palace. My take: If Madhumati had reincarnated as Radha, then there shouldn't be a ghostly presence in the castle anymore. Anand and Madhu have reincarnated as Devinder and Radha...and there the story should end. So, here is the horrifying plot twist. Madhu's spirit was never reborn. She was cursed eternally to be a wandering, evil spirit BECAUSE she lured an innocent man (Anand) to his death in the climax. She is stuck in eternal limbo, never to be united with her lover again for this crime. She is therefore DETERMINED to get Devinder to be with her. And the screaming and the sobbing of the unseen woman in the beginning scenes...guess who it was? The train accident which could have resulted in Radha and their son's death? What if it wasn't quite an 'accident' after all. Imagine if Radha and the son had been killed, where would Devinder spend the rest of his life, a broken man? What do you folks think? (Maybe I just need to get a drink...) :p
Interesting theory, Dennis, but I think you're quite off the mark here. The train accident, the rainy and stormy night did make Devinder come to that old mansion, but there was no Madhu's ghost/spirit anymore there. (Because Madhu had already been reincarnated as Radha.) You are overlooking the fact that it is only Devinder who hears the scream of the woman (both times), the sound of the anklets, the sobbing of the woman. Whereas his doctor friend never hears any of those things. So we can surmise that once Devinder is inside the mansion, the tragic events that took place in the mansion in his previous birth are coming back only into his consciousness, in snatches, in flashes. That's why only he hears those sounds, not his friend or the old caretaker.
I really don't know what the writer was trying to do but it would have been good if Anand and Madhavi have been together and story would've been told from Anand's perspective....
So much natural acting by Dilip Kumar..just compelling to watch him. RIP. Will always be remembered as such. Vyjantimala was another stellar actor and amazing as his co-star in so many incredible movies.

Salient features: 1. Team work of maestros such as Bimal Roy, Ritwik Ghatak , Sail Choudhary, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Pran,Vyjayanthimala is surely a noteworthy. 2. Songs, music and chereography along with voice of Mukesh, Lata ji and scenery are soothing to ears and eyes. 3. Interesting to see even Director such as Raj Kapoor(who used to produce movies larger than life) is also influenced by Madhumati. 4. Combined mind power of Ritwik ji and Bimal ji have surely have produced intriguing social scenes; as the character of Pran has played the role of autocratic capitalist , character of Dilip Kumar has played an egalitarian manager and locals have played subdued roles; as that is the unfortunate norms in capitalistic society. An egalitarian manager is not a norm though. 5. The character of villian is played so well by Pran; that he became trailblazer for next generation of actors; who thrived on villian roles. 6. The concept of reincarnation has been beautifully protrayed in movie. Souls with unfulfilled desires have been shown to get reincarnated to fulfill their desires and that may be true. 7. All later on movies with reincarnation theme surely was inspired by Madhumati; eventhough later producers fail to provide acknowledgement. 8. The phenomena of cause and effect & the concept of justice have been shown succinctly in the movie. When the spirit confronts to character played by Pran for justice; what could be said more? 9. The movie was produced more than 60 yrs ago. Factoring the time; the movie could correctly be said to be one of the best attempt to justify one's 3 hours and ticket fee. 10. The ingredient of masala in the movie is so properly managed. Dance, song, comedy, tragedy, suspense, villianous nature, rightly nature, human propensity of justice, revenge , after life, reincarnation , effect of Karma ( cause and effect) have been shown beautifully. After box office flop of Devdas; Bimal Roy may have restored to produce a masala movie to get maximum benefit from box office to pay his outstanding debt. As, true artists do not surrender to formula movie; the last resort of Bimal Roy may be seen as neccesity stuff to live in this capitalistic society. Therefore, finally we may end up as Raja Ugra Narain; if we wanna survive and succeed in current eco-political climate. There has also been some estimation that Bimal ji needed fund to produce arts movies in later days ; such as Sujata and Bandini. 11. The propensity of revenge from Raja Ugra Narain and propensity of justice from Madhumati as spirit is quite interesting to observe. A life is about getting justice (assertive); not about getting revenge(aggresive). At times; better to retreat and forgive as per situations. 12.self harms by Madhumati and Devinder are not warranted; as need to take life challenges assertively. Not every day is sun shining and duality is nature of life. Better learn to fight constructively than indulge on self harm. However, that may mean to have a formula film. When a leading actor pass away at the end of the movie along with his heroine; that is the first step of arousing sympathy towards actors and common people love these kind of dramas. Apprently, Madhumati commenced the era of formula movie as well along with commencing era of reincarnation movie and role model for later on villainous roles unwittingly.

In my view, the best indian movie ever. The last bit is very spooky. VJ, DK, Pran and all casts at their very best.

My take: If Madhumati had reincarnated as Radha, then there shouldn't be a ghostly presence in the castle anymore. Anand and Madhu have reincarnated as Devinder and Radha...and there the story should end.
So, here is the horrifying plot twist. Madhu's spirit was never reborn. She was cursed eternally to be a wandering, evil spirit BECAUSE she lured an innocent man (Anand) to his death in the climax. She is stuck in eternal limbo, never to be united with her lover again for this crime. She is therefore DETERMINED to get Devinder to be with her.
And the screaming and the sobbing of the unseen woman in the beginning scenes...guess who it was? The train accident which could have resulted in Radha and their son's death? What if it wasn't quite an 'accident' after all. Imagine if Radha and the son had been killed, where would Devinder spend the rest of his life, a broken man?
What do you folks think? (Maybe I just need to get a drink...) :p
Interesting theory, Dennis, but I think you're quite off the mark here. The train accident, the rainy and stormy night did make Devinder come to that old mansion, but there was no Madhu's ghost/spirit anymore there. (Because Madhu had already been reincarnated as Radha.) You are overlooking the fact that it is only Devinder who hears the scream of the woman (both times), the sound of the anklets, the sobbing of the woman. Whereas his doctor friend never hears any of those things. So we can surmise that once Devinder is inside the mansion, the tragic events that took place in the mansion in his previous birth are coming back only into his consciousness, in snatches, in flashes. That's why only he hears those sounds, not his friend or the old caretaker.

Salient features:
1. Team work of maestros such as Bimal Roy, Ritwik Ghatak , Sail Choudhary, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Pran,Vyjayanthimala is surely a noteworthy.
2. Songs, music and chereography along with voice of Mukesh, Lata ji and scenery are soothing to ears and eyes.
3. Interesting to see even Director such as Raj Kapoor(who used to produce movies larger than life) is also influenced by Madhumati.
4. Combined mind power of Ritwik ji and Bimal ji have surely have produced intriguing social scenes; as the character of Pran has played the role of autocratic capitalist , character of Dilip Kumar has played an egalitarian manager and locals have played subdued roles; as that is the unfortunate norms in capitalistic society. An egalitarian manager is not a norm though.
5. The character of villian is played so well by Pran; that he became trailblazer for next generation of actors; who thrived on villian roles.
6. The concept of reincarnation has been beautifully protrayed in movie. Souls with unfulfilled desires have been shown to get reincarnated to fulfill their desires and that may be true.
7. All later on movies with reincarnation theme surely was inspired by Madhumati; eventhough later producers fail to provide acknowledgement.
8. The phenomena of cause and effect & the concept of justice have been shown succinctly in the movie. When the spirit confronts to character played by Pran for justice; what could be said more?
9. The movie was produced more than 60 yrs ago. Factoring the time; the movie could correctly be said to be one of the best attempt to justify one's 3 hours and ticket fee.
10. The ingredient of masala in the movie is so properly managed. Dance, song, comedy, tragedy, suspense, villianous nature, rightly nature, human propensity of justice, revenge , after life, reincarnation , effect of Karma ( cause and effect) have been shown beautifully. After box office flop of Devdas; Bimal Roy may have restored to produce a masala movie to get maximum benefit from box office to pay his outstanding debt. As, true artists do not surrender to formula movie; the last resort of Bimal Roy may be seen as neccesity stuff to live in this capitalistic society. Therefore, finally we may end up as Raja Ugra Narain; if we wanna survive and succeed in current eco-political climate. There has also been some estimation that Bimal ji needed fund to produce arts movies in later days ; such as Sujata and Bandini.
11. The propensity of revenge from Raja Ugra Narain and propensity of justice from Madhumati as spirit is quite interesting to observe. A life is about getting justice (assertive); not about getting revenge(aggresive). At times; better to retreat and forgive as per situations.
12.self harms by Madhumati and Devinder are not warranted; as need to take life challenges assertively. Not every day is sun shining and duality is nature of life. Better learn to fight constructively than indulge on self harm.
However, that may mean to have a formula film. When a leading actor pass away at the end of the movie along with his heroine; that is the first step of arousing sympathy towards actors and common people love these kind of dramas.
Apprently, Madhumati commenced the era of formula movie as well along with commencing era of reincarnation movie and role model for later on villainous roles unwittingly.
