    What a great time to be into analogue synthesis. So many companies nowadays, Korg being perhaps the frontrunner (depending on your tastes of course), producing affordable but great sounding analogue synthesisers with plenty of controls. One can have the warmth and character of analogue with the reliability and convenience of digital.

    This thing sounds shockingly good. I think my only problem with the minilogue was it kind of lacked any particular...character I guess. This right from the get go seems to have a very clear emphasis on dirty, crunchy sounds with a lot of bite and I love that. Excellent demo too! Loved the stuff you were doing at around 5:06

      @@ramonmagallan6194 Even with the Minilogue XD, which I have, the Monologue would be a great complement since it's so cheap. Being able to run two logues, one for mono and one for poly is pretty sick

  • @rars0n
    @rars0n 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This thing seems so freaking cool. I played with a Minilogue the other day and was fairly impressed with the build quality and sound, but I think I like this better. I tend to go more for monophonic synths anyway, but it seems like filter is better on the Monologue, and I kind of like the full step sequencer for fooling around without a DAW or other controller.
    I really liked the OLED display, too. For something so small and simple, it's very clean and easy to read, and I think being able to view the waveform is rather useful, probably an underrated aspect of both the Mini and Mono. I think I'm determined to get Monologue, $299 is a pretty ridiculous price for something this good.

    just because something new came out doesn't mean that MB is not working good anymore.

    • @7drone7

      I very-much agree - the Monologue has a totally complimentary sound. I would have liked to see a few VC inputs/outputs on the Monologue, and we'll see if someone will take a go at a DIY solution in time... but for me, that makes the Microbrute a tool that goes beyond just tone generating.

    Great demo! I have some questions:
    1. Besides programming the notes manually in the sequencer, is there any arpeggiator function?
    2. Release date?
    3. How does it fare when syncing to Ableton? How about syncing to a KP3+?

      Hi Donald, the Monologue has a Sequencer and Motion Sequencer, but does not have an Arpeggiator. We're told it's arriving soon! I didn't have it long enough to try syncing to other things but Korg's pretty good with that. Thanks for watching!

    I know there isn't a manual yet but can you tell us if it sends MIDI out via its knobs? Do those knobs respond when played back into it? Since it has presets, I'm hopeful on this one.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi syrupcore, I didn't have a full MIDI setup handy when I was playing with the Monologue, but I *did* run USB to my Mac and confirmed that the sound parameter knobs each sent unique CC#s. Although I couldn't confirm that it also received these CC#s, it's hard to imagine that they'd send them but then not listen to them ;-)

    My Minilogue comes in way more colours than just 5 ;-)
    Must admit, despite no PSU included, which is a joke, I'm actually impressed. A lot of the things people have been missing in the Minilogue is included here. I seriously hope the software-based ones are introduced with an update, which should be fully possible.
    Great video of an excellent little mono synth. If you were in the market already, choosing just got both easier and harder.

    • @BobsBand
      @BobsBand 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What have people been missing in the Minilogue?

    • @MarctheDarc
      @MarctheDarc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Steed A drive circuit, and the option to play/gate/transpose the sequencer from the keys - probably the 2 most missed features. Non-realtime programming of the motion sequencing - currently only realtime recording on the Minilogue. And several of the other workflow tweaks have been mentioned.
      Obviously they can't add a drive circuit, but the rest could be added to the Minilogue with a software update, same as they added latch for the arpeggiator.

      Patrick Donaldson I'd go with the Minilogue. I own one and love it. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get one of these guys, but you get a bit more with the Minilogue. If you rather have polyphonic with the choice of monophonic and others. With this, it's just monophonic.

    • @BargainBinkey

      NEOREVmusic I am leaning that way, even through the clicking issues. simply for the polyphony.

    • @NEOREV_MUSIC
      @NEOREV_MUSIC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patrick Donaldson i think the clicking was blown way out if proportion. I have absolutely zero issues with clicking. If you want to push settings to cause a click, then you can. But it's not something I've personally come across when creating sounds. Plus I read ways to get around that if you come across it. I have a blast with mine. Hey, Moderat (Modeselektor & Apparat) use a Minilogue live.

    Does anyone know how linking this to my computer would work? Would the music making software I need require some special tool to get the sequences made with the korg into my piece?
    (I use bandlab because I'm a total nob)

    ZSo much better than the microbrute, it took a while for korg to catch up to Arturia, but this is a really good little synth.

      setphaser unfair comparison, MB came out quite a few years ago. Both quite different beats.

    • @setphaser
      @setphaser 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      disarmsox yeah I did acknowledge that Arturia beat them to it. But I'm not sure it's an unfair comparison... while the industry has developed a lot, there is no new technology here. I've been wanting synths to have sequencers in built for years, it's only recently that it's almost become standard, and Arturia started that in a way with their note sequence arp. The matrix kicks anything korg has come up with so. All is fair in love and synths right?

      MegaCrasherMusic which has the more immediate feature set? It's an interesting observation.

    MIDI OUT QUERY - Is the MIDI Out port for note data only or can the other physical controls send MIDI CC data also?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jesse, I'm happy to say that all of the switches and knobs on the Monologue that are directly related to a sound parameter send specific CC#s. Thanks for watching!

    • @jessetaldotcom
      @jessetaldotcom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL -- I was afraid of that! I'm trying to find reasons NOT to get this thing but it really is almost too good to be true at that price! I think that Korg definitely have an instant classic with this one -- perhaps more so than with the Minilogue (a great synth in its own right).
      So, two more related questions:
      1) are tweaks of all of those knobs you mentioned able to be recorded as motion sequence data;
      2) if so, can those motion-sequenced knob tweaks also be outputted as MIDI CC information; and,
      3) is the Monologue bus-powered when used with a computer?
      I'm trying to figure out whether the Monologue can be used as a MIDI CC sequencer for other hardware MIDI gear or software.

      Hi Scvmbxg Otvxv, the Monologue, like any keyboard, can be used in place of a guitar on any external Talk Box or Vocoder. Simply connect it the same way you would have connected the guitar. Thanks for watching!

    • @sweetwater

      Hi Evert, that's the byproduct of one audio-frequency oscillator modulating another audio frequency oscillator. Everything you're hearing in the intro was created that way. Thanks for watching!

    I like watching Daniel Fisher show us synths. If only we could get more of them! For example, would love to see Tip Top Audio's drum modules, or Studio Electronic's filter modules, or any of the more obscure stuff. Also, I'm kinda disappointed at the envelope. Anything short of a 4 stage will always be disappointing ESPECIALLY on a keyboard synth.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, although there are only the ATTACK and DECAY knobs for the envelope, there is a TYPE switch with three variations that helps to expand your envelope possibilities (No Sustain, Full Sustain, and Inverted). Using the LFO in 1-SHOT mode also gives you another envelope tool.

      Is it hardwired to the amp?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dan, the best I can tell, without a manual, is that the EG seems to be hardwired to the Amp, with a three-position TARGET switch that also sends the EG to OSC 1+2, OSC 2 only, or Filter Cutoff. There's a INT (Intensity) knob that controls how much the EG goes to wherever the TARGET switch is set to.

    • @AdamJayTechnoElectro
      @AdamJayTechnoElectro 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great explanation. So this is kinda like the Sh-101/Atlantis EG but with more mod destinations/capabilities. The single EG is both Amp+Mod EG.

    • @Zinfidel1
      @Zinfidel1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Jay Yeah but the envelope is still mediocre. This is a fantastic synth for people new to analog or someone that wants a mono synth to be sequenced and doesn't care about dialing in Sustain and Release. However, the envelopes on the Bass Station 2 and Minibrute (and even the Microbrute) still surpass this. I suppose the reasoning is "Hey! You want a proper env? Then pick up a brand new Minilogue! In stores now!"

      Will Banks I bet part of their rational is guitars and bass guitars start on an E.
      So this keyboard layout would get the most out of a 2 octave keybed in a band setting.
