This message should be heard everywhere in schools. I couldn't agree more. The number of pupils that can't read properly, write properly and have troubles with basic numeracy (I am a maths teacher) - is beyond disbelief... the saddest picture ever... In my time of being a pupil we literally had calligraphy lessons where we would be taught how to write neatly with respect to every element of letters... nowadays - I am happy I am a maths teacher as there are mostly numbers.. I have no idea how language teachers are able to read and understand any of the handwritten work... bring in devices and pupils will even forget how to write at all.. I read how handwriting is connected to brain, how crucially important it is to hand-write and not type.. I heard that Ancient Chinese leaders had to pass a calligraphy exam! there is so much wrong with these devices everywhere, and I am so happy that scientists like you are talking about it!
One note about the final conclusion and call for return to basics. I recommend caution with a call for a return to basics. This gets seized by hard right conservatives as a return to very teacher centered didactic call and response pedagogy dominated by simple rote learned instruction. I’d hope the call might be to basics in term of analog, but keep moving forward on the encouragement of inquiry, student centered learning where students are at the center of action in the classroom and not a return to students passively listening to a teacher and sending memorized information back and then moving on without taking the next step of deeper application and use of that information.
I have worked in many schools that have 1:1 laptop policies. Bring your own device out of the blue is an absolute disaster.. they need to be introduced carefully at a young age, preferably a student will get their first device in school and it will be part of the curriculum to show them how to use it. The best school I worked in for this did this and had a digital literacies coordinator who worked across both the primary and secondary section. The school had the least problems with inappropriate device use than any other school I have worked in.. it wasn't perfect but it was better than the alternatives.
I love the way this video pulls together this fragmented debate. I sense so much uncritical sleepwalking related to technology and AI at the moment and this is a great counterbalance to it.
So does it mean that from using anki if i switch full time to learning from my book and ditching my smartphone while studying I'll be better off? I am quite confused about the issue honestly , if i do do it, is there a way to manage scheduling like anki and other spaced repetition stuff manages for me? Also thanks for the great insights!
