Both skeins of yarn turned out gorgeous. I would make him a sweater or his favorite scarf with his yarn. He hm is so adorable and very smart! Great job momma!
Thank you so much! L is now 7 years old! He is still very much a natural. Now with a lot more remote school stuff he loves to contribute when I'm explaining something for a video. ;)
Thank you! I need to do a new recap video with hand dyed yarns. Lucas's turned into a hat that he wears a lot. There are some pictures of it on my Instagram (likely tagged with #chemkids #chemkid or #luckyfromchemknits)
Thank you! I'm so excited that he keeps asking to dye yarn with me. Now I just need to teach him to knit! (I think we're still a few years away from that, though.)
Aww, Lucas is adorable! His Yarn looks so good, very fall like. I agree with you about having a sponge for each color, but you both did a great job! Always enjoy seeing you both together experimenting! Thanks! Happy Knitting, Dyeing, Spinning and all that good stuff!
By the time I realized that, I knew I couldn't leave Lucas alone with the Kool-Aid to run and get more brushes. ;) He is now begging to do more yarn more yarn! :O)
ChemKnits Tutorials That's so cool! Can you imagine him in another 6 months, he'll be out -dyeing you, lol! It's great, the next few years are so important to continue doing everything with him, time flies by, enjoy every minute! All mine are grown now, my baby just turned 18 in June!
Your son is adorable. We are sitting here talking about how beautiful your yarn is. I said, I love the yarn her son made. That is something I would buy.
dude... I am tooooottttttalllllly spinning some white fiber next and dyeing this way- holy crap those came out so vibrant and the control with the foam brush was amazing!!!!
The only thing I do is presoak the yarn in some plain tap water for at least 20 minutes. There are techniques that you can do starting with dry yarn, but it is easier to apply the dye to damp yarn. I will show exactly how I do this in the KnitCrate video that will be out in a few weeks.
Oh my God, Lucas is absolutely Adorable. Quite the helper you got there. I love the results of this dye. I'd like to give it a try. Where do you buy the bare yarn from? Do you have a suggestion as to which yarn I should buy to begin?
He's so big now! I just added a link in the description to the yarn I used. It is bare stroll fingering weight yarn from KnitPicks. (I am a KnitPicks affiliate which means I would earn a commission for purchases made through my links.) I started buying bare yarn from KnitPicks since I was familiar with their bases and you can buy single skeins versus committing to a pack of 10. There are bulk discounts available.
Here is some research I've done on other bare yarn suppliers. www.chemknits.com/2018/01/where-to-buy-bare-yarns-undyed-yarns.html I've used a lot of Dyer Supplier yarn now (they sent it to me for free to try and I like it a lot). I've also purchased some yarn from Wool2Dye4. I order from the different companies for different bases I want to use. :D
Lucas is so cute! I think it is wonderful to include your kids in your dyeing adventures!!! Both skeins are incredibly pretty. I wouldn't mind having either one! i'm thinking about trying some kool aid dyeing with my 10 year old grandson. Any tips?
A 10 year old would be able to have a BLAST dyeing with KoolAid. I just sent a kit to my niece with some 100% wool yarn and a rainbow of KoolAid colors. I think that the foam brushes are a really easy way for kids to dye yarn. However with a 10 year old, you could also try some speckling and kettle dyeing techniques (if you trust them to not make too much of a mess!) It could also be really fun to dye a blank with a 10 year old. They could use the brushes to paint a picture on it. I know that Lucas LOVES that I made a hat for him out of the yarn that he dyed. He's so proud to tell everyone that. If you want a nice variety of colors, I would take the KoolAid colors and then add some drops of liquid food coloring to shift the tones. This will give you the ease of citric acid (fun of playing with koolaid) PLUS custom colors. Here is a sample of some of my color mixing. th-cam.com/video/ED9Jq0I_6LI/w-d-xo.html If I weren't trying to recreate my first handpainted yarn here, then I would have used foam brushes.
He’s so cute! 😁 I know this was couple years back but just saw 🥰 His turned out great.. would of love to see both crocheted into something 😋 May I ask why u blended ombréd only at one end of yarn and left the white spaces on others? 🤓😊
I think I originally intended to do more coverage, but I liked how the white spacing looked! I don't have the rainbow yarn myself anymore, but Lucas's yarn turned into a hat that he has worn for the last 2 winters!
ChemKnits Tutorials darn I would’ve 💜to see that rainbow 🌈 one all crocheted up to something 😁 u should post a pic of his hat in one of ur vids here sometime 😋 if u did on social media’s sites I wouldn’t be able to see cause I don’t do any other social media sites anymore. 🥺
Re watching new questions, have you ever a mixed a pack of cherry with blue raspberry to see what purple you get? Got my black dye today! It rained, got all day errands tomorrow, Thursday I'm dying my first sock yarn. What? Yes!
YAY OH YAY, you'll be great! Cherry is a LOT more vibrant than the blue raspberry, I think it would overwhelm the blue and you wouldn't see much of a difference. You need a LOT of dye to get a red versus a pink. I mix blue raspberry with pink lemonade sometimes and the resulting color is fairly greyish purple.
Lol 'I decided to go a little more controlled... and lucas went more exuberant ' aka i decided to dye like an adult with a plan and lucas.... is 3 (almost 4). Love the unicorn yarn! I hope I get it as a champagne reward! I'm sitting here getting all jealous of your Kool-Aid in the packets thing and resentful that Kool-Aid doesn't sell them in canada anymore and I'm going to have to import it and I realized duh my mom's in Florida right now so I messaged her 'mom go get me some packets of Kool-Aid every color!' The purple is a little sad and dark for me but i love your results.
In the past I think I've mixed some of the grape with ice blue raspberry lemonade and that has brightened it up a lot. Dyeing rainbows is one of my favorite things. I'm not a sock knitter but I really want to turn this in to socks. I have a feeling I might repeat this colorway someday. ;)
I kept wondering what one does in a KoolAid free world. I did not realize Kool-Aid was still being sold in the USA. Now to get my hands on some for crafting ASAP
Awe, thanks so much! This was a really fun video to do. I can't wait to do this type of colorway again, and Lucas is beyond excited to dye some more, too.
I really enjoy your videos. I have a question about dyeing synthetic yarns and blended yarns with Rit Dyemore colors which are specifically made for acrylic and synthetic blends. When using these dyes I have noted that the dye bath never exhausts itself and becomes clear. Do you know why this occurs? Is it because synthetic fibers are plastic and the dye simply coats the fibers. I have been able to obtain beautiful colors on acrylic which I use to knit hats to donate. Again your son is precious.
Thank you Linda! I haven't played with the DyeMore synthetic dye too much. The one time I did I used WAY too much dye so there was a lot of rinsing to do. It is possible that it might clear if you use less dye, but then you would get a less saturated color on your yarn. The rit for natural fibers does clear if I don't overload the dye too much in the pot. Then the rinsing is SUPER DUPER easy and I love it. :D
You can steam set the yarn in the oven or in a steamer basket. If you were to place the yarn in a pot of water the colors would spread out a lot more and would likely bleed into one another.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials that's exactly what happened! I did try using the steamer and it did work a lot better thanks. I will continue following you until I learned a lot more
This is a great suggestion, thanks! I know that people want to see what the yarns look like knit up, so maybe reskeining would be a way to show the colors mixing together. I have some before and after reskeined yarns on the instagram account. I'll try to do some more!
Hi Hira, I'm not quote sure what posain color is, unfortunately, so I cannot speak to that. If you don't have a microwave you can heat set the yarn a few different ways. Solar dyeing in the sun is one way that can work really nicely (just make sure you wait long enough!) Another thing that works well is a steamer basket on the stovetop or crock pot. Unfortunately you cannot dye cotton fabric with food coloring. You need a protein based yarn for food coloring dyeing (wool, silk, etc).
I'm going to ask a silly question here, what would you do if you didn't have a microwave? Would you avoid this method all together or is there another way to fix the colors permanently?
You could wrap up the yarn in plastic wrap and then put it in a steamer basket on the stove top. (I haven't tried it with plastic wrap yet myself, but I know lots of people use it.) I would steam the yarn for about 20 minutes or so to set the color. You can also set the color in the oven. 180 degrees F is sufficient, but you would want to make sure that you wouldn't let the yarn dry out.
I'm just so happy you replied to me personally! You made my day! I discovered your channel just last week and I love it! I so fascinated by all the experiments you do. Anywho, you just gained yourself another subscriber. Just keep been awesome!
I have a feeling I'm more likely to end up with a yarn skein wall by Lucas since he doesn't want to give them up. ;) I hope he doesn't get sad when I turn his yarns into a hat got him to wear!
KoolAid is an artificially colored fruity flavored beverage in the united states. The type I'm using comes in little packets that have the color and flavor and allow people to add as much sugar as they would like.
ChemKnits Tutorials ,ah,that makes sense when you said you loved the smell of them 😊 I thought it was a brand of dye , I believe the uk no longer sells them due to the high levels of the artificial colouring used but I do remember the raspberry powder smells divine ,thanks for your swift reply.

My niece and nephew like helping this will be fun to do with them thanks
It is so much fun! Now L just has to decide which of his yarns he wants me to knit for his winter hat.
I think anyone can do this. Lucus did great! 😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's why I show him dyeing yarn! This yarn turned into a hat that L wears ever day this winter. If a 4 year old can do it then anyone can!
