Absolutely amazing video. I’m not much of a Star Wars guy anymore, but your chill deadpan voice, snappy editing, and well-made scripts make these videos on the SW expanded universe very interesting to watch.
As a dedicated fan of Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) and other sci-fi MMOs of the past, it's disheartening to see the continued trend of MMO companies hyperfocusing on World of Warcraft's mechanics and setting as the sole formula for success. While WoW undeniably set the standard for many aspects of the genre, it's frustrating to see the industry reluctant to explore other rich and diverse settings. There's an overabundance of high fantasy MMOs saturating the market, leaving fans of sci-fi, cyberpunk, modern settings, and other non-high fantasy genres feeling neglected. The appeal of exploring galaxies far, far away, or navigating the gritty streets of a cyberpunk dystopia shouldn't be overshadowed by the familiarity of elves, orcs, and dragons. It's time for MMO developers to branch out and embrace the vast potential of different settings and themes. Whether it's the immersive world of Star Wars, the neon-lit streets of a cyberpunk metropolis, or the intrigue of modern espionage, there's a whole universe of untapped creativity waiting to be explored. As fans, we crave diversity and innovation in our gaming experiences. It's my hope that developers will listen to the voices of their communities and start venturing into new territories, offering fresh and exciting worlds for us to explore together.
Having play TOR Pre and post-Cartel Coin, there's actually two things about the system I genuinely like. 1) Once you've bought something with CCs, it applies to your entire account. If you make another character (or already have other existing characters), they can immediately get a copy of whatever you bought off the CC shop free~ish (I mean, aside from the original cost, obviously). 2) Weapons and Equipment get their actual stats from slotted-in parts you acquire in-game with the regular in-game currency. So, every single character on your account can have one cool gun you really liked, and it will stay useful the whole game, for just the initial cost. I wish more MMOs did that. Also, Alderaan and Tatooine are damn gorgeous in this game. Male Smuggler is the best MC in the game. You can hit on Satele Shan.
Literally one of 2 youtubers I have notifications turned on for and actively remind myself to like their videos. Love your stuff man, its been getting me through college these past 2-3 years. Always good stuff from you :)
"Unfortunately, no one can fathom not being able to swing a light saber in a Star Wars MMO" seriously, what got me hyped about Star Wars galaxies all those years ago was being able to live in the open Star Wars galaxy, I didn't really care about the Jedi stuff. People need to realize Star Wars is more than just lightsabers.
@@Noxx55 don't forget SWG Restoration. I think it could be the best, unfortunately I've experienced some bad client crashes/freezes with it. I used to be a SWGemu fan boi, but honestly, SWG Legends is the best you can get right now. If you still long for the raw pre-CU version of the game, then SWGemu/Finalist is still king. Personally, I play both and a few others. I wish Restoration would get their issues figured out though. I feel like the short lived CU was the best version of the game. Not sure what causes the client issues with Restoration. Doesn't effect everyone, but it does effect enough to result and many complaints about it and it's leadership. I've never had issues like that with Legends or SWGemu's Finalist server.
I return to SWTOR every once in a while, to catch up on the story (I think Chains in the Dark has some great moments for example, and the newest flashpoint on Voss echoes some of the best flashpoints from vanilla) and also retread some of the best class story questlines. I've had some great moments with the game, it has its flaws but its one of the best star wars experiences you can have in gaming, and a lot of it is for free ! Thank you for the video ! Very pleasant and interesting watch
As somebody whose obsessed with swinging the over glorified glowsticks, I do agree that there is a problem with Lightsabers in a multiplayer RPG. While I believe SWTOR did Jedi better than SWG, I still can't help but wonder if there is a solution for making Lightsabers accessable, yet mythical and rare. Maybe not. Maybe Lightsabers are better off in a Jedi Knight game, which I also feel a strong need for personally. Great video by the way.
Ironically, towards the end os SWG, the NGE kind of made Jedi rare again. At least as far as pvp goes. Very few people wanted to play Jedi for pvp, because even fewer people were willing to allow Jedi into their pvp groups. It was all about Medics, Officers, and Bounty Hunters, while Commando and Smugglers were acceptable too.
The day the SWG beta discs arrived at my house is one of the happiest moments of my life. I don't care if that sounds sad. It was a breezy warm afternoon, I was a wee lad, and the future was limitless
Swtor is honestly my favorite StarWars game. TOR has some of the deepest lore in StarWars. To have a game where I can genuinely be a Sith Lord and decide how I effect the galaxy is something new StarWars is incapable of doing.
I still play SWG. Two different versions of it and one in between. SWG Legends (NGE), SWG Evolve (NGE with some elements of CU), and SWG Restoration (CU). To this day, I believe SWG was/is the greatest MMORPG ever created. Certainly the best Star Wars MMORPG ever created. Nothing has come close and SWG did things that haven't been recreated since. Yeah, SWTOR was prettier and the cinematic story line was great, but in the end, it was very lacking compared to SWG. Honestly, even though people got upset, the CU was SWG at it's best and in the end, the NGE was Combat/PvP at it's best. If someone were to create an SWG server with the CU skill based leveling system and with the fluid combat style of the NGE, that would be golden. Something that SWG Evolve is actually trying to do. SWG Restoration would be awesome, but they have issues that need be resolved. Until then, SWG Legends is #1. There's a reason why it is the most populated SWG server. For those that still want the raw pre-CU SWG, SWGemu/Finalizer is still going and is the 2nd most populated SWG server. SWTOR had major issue right out of the gate. Primarily it's default resolution and frame settings that caused "out of range" display errors (on PC) when many people first tried to launch the game. Basically, they ended up with the the black screen of death. I knew a lot of people and multiple guilds from SWG that jumped into (or at least tried) SWTOR right from the start. Most everyone I knew, had issues getting the game going due to the "out of range" error and just simply gave up. They turned to SWGemu (a pre-CU SWG emulator that had been around for a long time) or one of the newer SWG emulators that were popping up like Project SWG and finally SWG Legends. There was a fix for SWTOR's "out of range" display error. It was actually figured out by the players that were intent on getting the game to work. They shared the fix on numerous sites, which involved users getting into the SWTOR game files .ini settings and manually changing the resolution and frame rate settings, just to be able to launch the game. Instead of actually fixing the issue (which would have been a simple fix) EA staff simply pointed users to a player forum thread that explained how to find and change the .ini settings in the game files. People not comfortable with doing such things, just moved on. Once you got into SWTOR, due to the story line, it was fun for a while. One thing that SWG folks liked about it though, was the ability to mix skill points in your class tree. Obviously, EA didn't learn from SOE's mistakes and they revamped the class system into a streamlined cookie cutter progression system. Nearly everyone I knew from the SWG days bounced at that point and started playing on SWG Legends. I stuck it out until they revamped the crafting system. Wasn't hard for me to leave at that point as I was already totally bored with the game and it's rinse and repeat system. The "free to play" model (which really means pay to win) was the final straw for most people I know. It didn't help the game at all from the player perspective. It gave the appearance of a thriving community, but it didn't improve the rate of getting cues for warzones or battle grounds, because the free to play players had very limited access. As a result more subscriber players left, which further increased cue times. I stuck it out until they revamped the crafting system. Wasn't hard for me to leave at that point as I was already totally bored with the game and it's rinse and repeat system. By that time, I was already playing on SWG emulator servers more than I was logging into SWTOR anyway. I never looked back or even reminisced about my time playing SWTOR. It just never had the same allure as SWG did/does. I continue playing SWG to this very day and have never gotten bored with it.
I remember when they added the vehicles to SWG, due to a bug they couldn't be despawned but they could be respawned so every city became clogged with burning exploding vehicles, fun times
(1:59) Fun fact: Ultima Online is where the concept of server shards came from. In the intro, the evil wizard was trying to contain the world in a big gem that was then shattered. Each shard containing a copy of the original world. 😎
I've been playing SWTOR for a long time, since the days when F2P players were stuck on the first two planets and had a lvl 15 level-cap. While I agree that it is very stagnant, I still have a lot of fun playing the game, mostly by creating individual personalities for each character I create and then making choices based on said personality, thus making each playthrough a nigh-unique experience. Also, I love the music, the design of the world and characters and most of the companion characters. Also also the sass. Sassy Sith ftw!
SWTOR is a next to perfection MMO. The class stories are awesome, the dialogue options are great, 70% of its lore is amazing even for legends standards, the character customization is pretty decent (i'd even say its amazing if you consider the thousands of cloth pieces and dyes combinations you can make). The leveling is well paced, the gearing is perfectly balanced between being challenging and not being an endless grind. The PVP is the best and funniest of every MMO i've ever played, the PVE raid mechanics feels more like vanilla wow's than wow itself. It's the last bastion of true Star Wars and they're doing a great job all things considered. And the only two problems i can think about SWTOR are: 1- KOTET/KOTFE makes no sense to non-force classes midway throughout its history (and that avengers-style power of friendship ending is unecessary like why bring the same villain back to life for the 3rd time?) 2- I really disliked the double class system allowing Jedis to have Sith powers because it doesn't make sense story-wise like imagine a padawan on Tython shooting lightnings all around lol. Besides that, i've got no complains whatsoever. People are so used to MMO's that make you feel like you're working on a part time job that they start whining whenever there's an MMO that makes you feel like you're part of something bigger by focusing more on being an enjoyable storytelling expierence than a painful and boring grind.
I was a paying (well my friend's parents paid) sub/player for 7 8 years. That last night was one of the best gaming experiences i will ever have. Truly an amazing night of community and shenanigans. I do not know why my friend's mom paid for my SWG sub for literally the entire life cycle of Galaxies.I love them for that though.
i still love this game and i returned a couple of days ago! your video is brilliant and i thank very much for that! May the force be with you...or so 😁
Honestly if they do make a new SW MMO after SWTOR, I hope it's set post Rise of Skywalker. It would be the perfect opportunity to explore the whole of Star Wars, traversing planets, fighting creatures across all eras and beyond.
I remember the days actually buying the disc for these “online” games. SWTOR I preordered and I was constantly watching the website to watch trailers and holovids from the Jedi master guy. I was obsessed, and then when i got the email to say I could play it early because of preorder, I rinsed the game out as a Sith Marauder and Jedi Knight, my Jedi knight was a skank, utilising tank stance and hybridisation in skill trees. But yeah got to the end game nothing much there and with burn out I legit left the game and forgot about it until SOR exp but It looked awful and I didn’t like the story, and when I actually returned was KOTFE, which I actually loved and DVL event was so engaging and made me want to play the other content I hadn’t played at that point. Fun times, don’t worry SWTOR will be back full strength, once DX12 becomes live and the port to Xbox, the focus will be back on content.
Honestly, I would still be playing if they kept the 6.0 gearing system. It was at a sweet spot right before 7.0. Yes, I know raiders complain about everyone having the best gear, but what's it matter? I raided on hard content, and good gear was necessary, but ultimately, it was who was behind the gear. In short, my time was limited, and the 6.0 system allowed me to gear without necessarily having to run with my group all the time.
@@TyphoonBlastYou think Disney is going to let people do whatever they feel like with their IP? No they’re going to have corpo overlords making devs do their song and dance.

Good video but I wished you would’ve talked more about NGE SWG. There was plenty of content that was added and watering it down to “SoE is out of touch so the game died” doesn’t do it justice. There’s a reason why the private Legends (NGE) server is the most popular SWG server.
It’s not, swgemu is. Vanilla Galaxies was king and really anything past JTL was shit and ruined the game. They never got good support which is why wow is still alive and galaxies isn’t
lol swgemu definitely doesn't have near the recurring population count of swglegends, and that's coming from someone who's played both since basilisk launch and when swglegends was "reborn" in 2016. I think even the CU swg restoration server probably has a higher pop count than swgemu at this point. @@FlyingKlutchKick
@@FlyingKlutchKick That's just an opinion. Personally, the short lived CU was SWG at it's best to me. With that said, the fluid combat of the NGE made PvP the best in the end. I actually enjoy playing on both SWGemu/Finalizer and SWG Legends. I would really enjoy playing on SWG Restoration if they could get their shit together, but client crashes keep turning me away. Never have any client issues with Finalizer or Legends.
I was in my early 20's when this came out. It remains the most ambitious and most social persistent world multiplayer game I've ever played. It was a little janky, but the dependencies on other players from healing to crafting (slicing, mining, manufacturing...), the way the player housing worked - even player cities, with voting and taxes and shuttles - and the opt-in Rebel vs Imperial PvP system (which included player created and run facilities, staffed by combat-capable NPCs and with missions you could run from them...) all really brought people together and created an enduring community despite the lack of narrative content. I cancelled my subscription very soon after the "Combat Upgrade" came out, @saintmillion is right on the money that they killed the game by trying to make it more like World of Warcraft (right down to the little quest marker icons above NPC's heads!). The "New Game Experience" inexplicably doubled down on this clear misstep and was utterly bizarre. The core audience of 300,000 people didn't leave for WoW, which was a very different game, they left after the CU and NGE changes. What ended my time with the game was the "Combat Upgrade" hugely downgraded my character and I could suddenly no longer wear my equipped armor or weapons (they were now arbitrarily gated behind a new skill tree) and my abilities were removed or reduced to the point my character was ineffectual in combat. The original, more flexible, skill tree system was very much part of the games appeal to the core audience and it helped to make it a more social experience, with players taking up different roles with complimentary abilities, giving people a reason to interact. While it's true most games use a much more linear system and force you to pick classes, the sorts of character levelling is still seen in games like EVE Online or RPGs (e.g. Elder Scrolls games) and provides a lot more player agency. The class system is easier for developers balance and is certainly staple of a lot of games today (as well as classic RPGs), but a lot of players are not a fan of it and prefer more flexible skill tree systems that reward creativity and appeal to styles that don't fit one of a tiny number of archetypes. Without the CU and the NGE the game probably could have been a going concern for years, as it was filling a niche that still hasn't really been filled by other games (the features in ever-impressive and ever-expanding No Man's Sky comes close, but remains a much less social experience, although they seem to be strongly pivoting that way). I missed SWG when it went away, and even 20 years later (now in my mid 40's) I still hope we see the like of it again. Maybe we can get a reboot in another couple of decades, just in time for my retirement when I'll have enough time for the grind.
I can honsestly listen to you talk about SWG For hours, that game does something weird to my brain. it's one of my most replayed games ever, it has and had so much potential. Lucasfilm, remake the game
Fantastic video. Sorta unrelated, but I wish game devs would stop parading SWG's corpse around, claiming they designed their game with SWG as an inspiration. Nothing has come close to SWG, not even the other MMOs in the same IP.
Having played Star Wars Galaxies and SWTOR, I generally see SWTOR's problems of practically being a Star Wars skin for generic mmo classes. This is really what gave Star Wars Galaxies the finishing blow with NGE (The removal of individual player classes and addition of standard starting classes) ; SWTOR limits the feel of those special classes by making it class based. You are not really a Jedi or Sith. You are a warrior/knight with a Star Wars skin, your lightsaber is not a lightsaber, but just a glowing hot stick never dealing the damage a lightsaber would. Instead of having really an open world, most planets feel like levels. It's not a bad game, but you won't find the real star wars experience in the gameplay. Star Wars Galaxies had a good open world, at least for it's time. It gave you options to be who you want to be. But also had a problematic start, with pressure from above and ideas that couldn't be fully implemented. You know that WoW Hardcore experience. SWG thought about making Jedi a hardcore class with permadeath. Many say Jedi was the thing that killed Galaxies, but I don't think it was the way the devs added hints for people, that started this destruction. The devs being under constant pressure, not having enough time, while members left for other companies, led to the devs implementing a bad system of how to aquire Jedi. Which generally was the worst design option. Having to master specific professions in a specific order, that is both completely randomized for every character is just bad design. Of course now one really just happened to become a Jedi, because it would be a complete coincidence that a person would have the exact idea of what professions to master in the exact order that is required to unlock Jedi for this specific character. It's not better than giving everyone an individual password to guess at a random location. Only that their way meant for people to grind professions they didn't like. So what can we expect in the future? A better SWG, giving people freedom again? Or SWTOR revamped to mix with Disney canon? I guess the big era of MMOs has ended. It costs too much and people rather play games with normal coop or multiplayer features, that are easier to implement than full good implemented MMO mechanics. Even though SWTOR still holds up, MMOs like WoW have a hard time to really stay alive, just being one big failed expansion or update away to really lose and MMOs like FFXIV making a change with more interesting gameplay. I just don't see devs being able to pull off another big MMO that really changes the market and it's very unlikely to be a Star Wars MMO with Emperor Mickey in control.
I think the jedi problem is overrated. They are essentially a pure dps class that can sacrifice their dps to tank or heal. Furthermore so long as jedi are overpowered vs common ai enemies it doesn't really matter if the other players Jango Fett cosplay is able to fight on equally terms albeit asymmetrically. Increase firing ranges and give non jedi enemies enemies slow or snare attacks and the ability to use energy shields. Or force the Jedi to slow down in order to deflect incoming fire. (they should still tear you apart once they reach melee range but. Another strategy is simply to put a couple of high level jedi in PVP with lower level non force users (or scale the non force users down).
There will never be another Star Wars MMO, and frankly there shouldn't be. Disney will most likely want to set it in the sequel trilogy era because they still are unable to wrap their heads around the fact that nearly the entire fan base hated those movies so much that it just about permanently ruined Star Wars for them.
Played like 2500hours really liked the game, but i never learned how to get involved in raids, boss fights, "communities", ¿Discord servers? Any recommendations? I was planning on getting back at the game but feels lonely i guess

for me Knights of the Fallen Empire and eternal throne has been the absolute peak of star wars media...ever, I loved every single moment of it
I'm not afraid to admit that i loved clone wars adventures and that it was a huge part of my childhood.
I don’t see a future ngl. The SW universe is too clean now. Everything has to be “canon” now. Devs have to focus on canon before fun.
Unless it's Fortnite.
@@scarlet_phonavis6734what's ESG
Ironically, most of SWTOR is non-canon from the Expanded or Legends universes. Even much of SWG was non-canon. Granted the Expanded universe and Legends universe is acceptable content by Disney's standards.
What do you mean by "too clean"?
We literally got a scene in the Kenobi show where Vader force snaps a child's neck infront of his parents.
@@theobell2002 he's talking about games, not Disney+ shows. Hence "Devs". Devs is short for game develpers.
Swg was my childhood. The friends I made on that game I still have today. I miss it
There are several emulations running with active communities, SWG EMU and SWG Legends being the biggest two.
Grew up playing a ton of clone wars adventures, really loved it back in the day. It definitely leaned into social aspects heavier than gameplay
LOL this video is making me hyped to jump into SWTOR again! O.O
Everquest Is a legendary game that needs more love.

Five years since your Jedi video….. great work as always
Hearing Kyne's Peace at the end triggered something deep within me
Swtor is honestly my favorite StarWars game. TOR has some of the deepest lore in StarWars. To have a game where I can genuinely be a Sith Lord and decide how I effect the galaxy is something new StarWars is incapable of doing.
may algorithm bless this
Very fun, insightful, nostalgic and, optimistic presentation. Thank you! - Wife of the 1st Jedi on the server Chilastra

Love your channel so much
I remember when they added the vehicles to SWG, due to a bug they couldn't be despawned but they could be respawned so every city became clogged with burning exploding vehicles, fun times
An amazing stir-fry and a saintmillion video. Good day.
I needed this video so much
I still actively play the nge SWG emulator. Best game ever made, full stop, in my opinion
I have been playing SWToR for several years, only through this video I found out that you can buy additional slots for characters
And the only two problems i can think about SWTOR are: 1- KOTET/KOTFE makes no sense to non-force classes midway throughout its history (and that avengers-style power of friendship ending is unecessary like why bring the same villain back to life for the 3rd time?)
2- I really disliked the double class system allowing Jedis to have Sith powers because it doesn't make sense story-wise like imagine a padawan on Tython shooting lightnings all around lol.
Never got into Galaxies but played CWA a ton when I was younger and still play SWTOR to this day.
epic meal man spotted @ 44:06
I thought I saw an announcement a year or so ago about a new Star Wars mmo in the works, maybe I dreamt it.
i still love this game and i returned a couple of days ago! your video is brilliant and i thank very much for that! May the force be with you...or so 😁
Welp, I made it to 25 seconds which was about the time you said "it all began with Everquest".
Who is this strange person that has appeared in my sub feed?
do i miss swtor because it was good, or do i miss swtor because i was 11
Honestly if they do make a new SW MMO after SWTOR, I hope it's set post Rise of Skywalker.
Man, so many fond memories from SWG back in the day. Bloodfin ftw.
My brother, so long as Star Wars falls under Disney's dark shadow... there can be no hope in our time.
What does this have to do with the video?
Dude Disney dosent do shit with games it’s game companies that make the games suck shit
@@TyphoonBlastYou think Disney is going to let people do whatever they feel like with their IP? No they’re going to have corpo overlords making devs do their song and dance.
@@TyphoonBlast Disney, as the owners of the Star Wars IP, are the ones who grant studios licenses to make games/movies/shows in the Star Wars universe. If the studios are making bad games it's because Disney is intentionally granting their licenses to poor quality studios and green lighting their mediocre projects.
My man. Lucasarts was just as bad. They'll make a MMORPG if it makes them money. Which it will.
This video deserves more views!!!
It's pretty nuts that Lucasarts pulled a Disney kind of move with Galaxies. "We NEED to have marketable Jedi"
Was this video reuploaded? I swear I saw this video months ago.
Not really an mmo, but if you're wanting another unique Star Wars game, may I suggest you look into the Star Wars Combine?
Great work as usual
Really interesting video and SWTOR is one of the only MMOs I really like, is Galaxies worth checking out?
Good video but I wished you would’ve talked more about NGE SWG. There was plenty of content that was added and watering it down to “SoE is out of touch so the game died” doesn’t do it justice. There’s a reason why the private Legends (NGE) server is the most popular SWG server.
It’s not, swgemu is. Vanilla Galaxies was king and really anything past JTL was shit and ruined the game. They never got good support which is why wow is still alive and galaxies isn’t
Not to mention how stupidly buggy it is
lol swgemu definitely doesn't have near the recurring population count of swglegends, and that's coming from someone who's played both since basilisk launch and when swglegends was "reborn" in 2016.
Maybe we can get a reboot in another couple of decades, just in time for my retirement when I'll have enough time for the grind.
man clone wars adventures was my childhood
till I got locked out of my account because I got my password wrong too many times lol
Dude, you need to make a vid on Drew Karpyshyn and his role in the KOTOR, Old republic novels, and SWTOR
I just don't see devs being able to pull off another big MMO that really changes the market and it's very unlikely to be a Star Wars MMO with Emperor Mickey in control.
ahh Galaxies… now that is a name i have not heard in a very long time…. (did betas for game and played at release until Jedi broke game).
i just love your voice man.
unrelated topic but nice video
No honorable mention of the first mmos Meridian 59 or Lineage 1 (pre EQ1/UO)?
amazing video 🙌
That ending was such a funny cop-out: What's the future of SW MMOs?! Who knows? Who cares? Probably nothing =))))))
The old republic mentioned :D
There will never be another Star Wars MMO, and frankly there shouldn't be. Disney will most likely want to set it in the sequel trilogy era because they still are unable to wrap their heads around the fact that nearly the entire fan base hated those movies so much that it just about permanently ruined Star Wars for them.
Played like 2500hours really liked the game, but i never learned how to get involved in raids, boss fights, "communities", ¿Discord servers? Any recommendations? I was planning on getting back at the game but feels lonely i guess
