Lubomyr Melnyk | Backlight Sessions 015 | Resident Studios, London
Lubomyr Melnyk is a Ukrainian composer and virtuoso pianist, dubbed '‘the prophet of the piano’', and globally renowned for his lifelong dedication to the instrument, and as the creator of "continuous music" - a piano technique based on extremely rapid notes and complex note-series.
Born in Munich (Germany) in 1948, Lubomyr emigrated to Canada with his family at a young age, where he studied classical piano and graduated with a degree in Latin and Philosophy from St Paul’s College in Winnipeg. While living in Paris in the 1970s, he supporting himself by playing accompaniment for dance classes, most notably in conjunction with Carolyn Carlson at the Paris Opera, and presented many works in conjunction with modern dance. It was in Paris that he drew inspiration from the spontaneous and improvisational nature of the choreography he witnessed to develop his new style: ‘continuous music’, which he uses to this day. In 1985, after relocating to Sweden, Lubomyr set two world records, documented on film and with full audio, at the Sigtuna Stiftelsen - sustaining speeds of over 19.5 notes per second in each hand, and playing 13-14 notes per second for a full hour.
As would be expected from an artist with a lifetime dedicated to an instrument, Lubomyr had a crystal-clear vision of how the final piece should sound and a meticulous attention to detail in order to achieve it. Lubomyr added a microphone to capture the full image of the piano as he intended, tweaked mic placements for the perfect balance, and nudged hardware reverb settings himself. But everything was achieved with wonderful sense of togetherness and teamwork, Lubomyr involving everyone in the control room in collaboration to achieve the best possible sound we could - to capture a priceless moment as pristinely as possible.
For the Backlight Sessions, Lubomyr presents an incredible 21-minute performance of "Butterfly", from his album: "Evertina" (Erased Tapes, 2014). A true gem from a composition catalogue which spans over 120 works for piano, double piano, as well as piano and ensemble. "Butterfly" beautifully showcases the full dynamic range of Lubomyr’s capabilities, from it’s delicate, playful opening to the breathless, lightning-fast close. An astounding performance from an outstanding, one-of-a-kind performer.
