The "game" of wine is so fun. Finding inexpensive real wines that drink way above their price point. Sure, opening a big money bottle is great every now and again, but finding everyday drinkers that rival the big boys is pure joy.
Fantastic selections with reasonable prices worldwide. Your description of each wine was extremely enlightening and helpful, John! Thanks for the recommendations and sharing your wine knowledge! Cheers!
Thank you for this informative video, John. I appreciate you’re featuring wines from various regions of the world, I feel there’s a wine for everyone. Well done! Happy Sunday!
Excellent video which really highlights why a visit to a wine store, rather than buying everything online, can pay dividends. I have to say, however, that you have to be based in a major city to find a wine store with quality picks. In the U.K we are talking about a handful of cities with maybe just one of those shops. It's supermarket stuff and the internet for connoisseur's for the majority. There are great independent shops in the U.K but you wont find bargains but they stock quality value. Some bargains do slip through in to the supermarket but tend to be on the expensive side for the average consumer but those in the know will snap them up. As, per usual, I expect Spanish wine to blow all others out of the water for value. Nevertheless, we don't just want to drink Spanish but it is incredible value. It regularly scores 90-94 for less than £30 and that never happens elsewhere. I have some Alion in the bunker along with many other amazing Spanish gems and they don't require too much age to reach peak performance. Like I say, visiting shops is always a good thing because you buy stuff out of your comfort zone and even things that could be good bang for buck. In the U.K it's the realm of family owned businesses or very old importers, usually based in London. I think wine aficionados are a rare breed even in the place of origin. When I visit wineries and bodegas I'm usually spoken to like a child. Great picks. WT. 🍷
Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to prepare such thorough and comprehensive feedback. I very much agree with you about Spanish wines. Very pleased you enjoyed the video! It means a lot.
Excellent video John ! Funny, I just returned from a trip to McAllen Texas to an HEB and bought 6 bottles for everyday consumption. I chose 3 reds from WA , a couple of Napa in the $25 range and a merlot from Oregon ( very curious to taste this one) . All wines from $15 to $35, so let´s see how it goes. There is a topic that I want you to do someday and it is how to plan a trip to Bordeaux or Tuscany to taste wines. It seems it is very complex and not as easy as a trip to Napa and I would like to go to St. Emilion, Pomerol, etc but have no clue on where to look. Maybe someday you can make a video on wine trips and give good tips specifically for Bordeaux
Thanks very much! Sounds like a nice haul! Appreciate the suggestions! I’ve been to Bordeaux once about 10 years ago, so probably need to visit again before doing that one (which I hope to do within a year). 👍🍷
Thank you Attorney Somm. I always enjoy your recommendations. I have had several of the Calera pinots but from other vinyards like Jensen and Ryan and so far haven't tasted a bad wine among the bunch. Great stuff. I am eager to try the Rioja in this review. You should try to get a hold of some Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva. I had a case of the 2004 which is now kaput but oh so enjoyable! At the time I paid around $45/bottle. They cost much more now.
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy the recommendations! That is another excellent suggestion! I may need to do a wine cellar defender - Rioja video soon. Just visited and it was very impressive! Cheers!
You do like i do sometimes. Buy everything of 2016 top wines. Only few left. Top vintage in allmost all of europe.Fortunately most havent got a clue. Where i buy anyway.
Prices in CA seem to be higher all around. At Total Wine near me, Sequoia Grove Napa cab 2018 is available for $48 (no potential discount). However, this morning I found it (2019) at Trader Joe's for $43!
Red Zinfandel generally pairs well with meat because it has spicy flavors, sweet fruit and a full body that make it an ideal pairing for meat and BBQ in particular.
I often hear that merlot became more affordable due to the "Sideways effect". Do you believe Merlot is undervalued or used to be? Is pinot noir overvalued (at least in the US)?
Hello, I'm curious if you've tried M. Chapoutier La Petite Ruche Crozes Hermitage? I just had it at a wine tasting class today..wondering if it's possible for my nose to pick up a totally different smell/nose than the description? The class teacher didn't say yes/no when I said I immediately smelled smoked meat/sausages, etc (within 2-3 seconds after swirling the glass and smelled the wine). Another guy confirmed he smelled like smoked cheese..but the bottle (or online) didn't mention anything close! Made me feel a bit like I've said a wrong thing!
Well done! That is outstanding! Yes, many Northern Rhone reds (and other cool weather Syrah) have smoked meat descriptors. They don't typically advertise those features as it may be confusing to some customers.
Considering that I work for this company, it's nice that I can get your selections quite easily. Most people I follow select wines I can't find close by.
We appreciate a qualified opinion in the value isle! Yes, sadly, Sideways still ripples through the Merlot vineyards.
Thanks very much! Glad it was helpful. Appreciate the kind feedback.
I Love all these videos you have been posting. Keep going strong. As a young man getting into wine, your formality really helps me
Thank you for watching and the kind feedback. Greatly appreciate it. Very glad the videos are useful! 👍🍷
Always exciting to see a new value video by Attorney Somm!
Thanks very much! Cheers!
Loved the selections of wines. Lots of valuable information in this video. Thank you for sharing your wealth of your wine knowledge, John! Cheers!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and the thoughtful feedback!

Completely agree with you! With some effort, it’s definitely possible to find some real gems! 👍🍷

I just went and found all of these except the Merlot. It was gone. Excellent tips.
Thanks very much! Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. 👍🍷

Definitely taking notes on the rioja! Thanks for another helpful and informative video
Rioja is the old war horse of Spanish wine but continues to deliver the goods. Look outside Rioja though for some really excellent value wines.
Thank you! Very glad to hear it. Rioja is a great place for value. I’ll be there in person next month so more to follow! Cheers!
Thanks my friend 🙏
My pleasure! Thanks very much.

Yes! That approach has worked very well and allowed me to skip most of the 2017s.
Thanks for the recommendations. All of these are new to me🍷
So glad it was useful! Thanks for watching and the thoughtful feedback.

Helpful video. Thank you 🍷
Thanks! Glad to hear! 👍🍷
top guy
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind feedback!
what is it about Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel that pairs well w/ BBQ? Is it that BBQ pairs well w/ wines that have spice and oakiness?
Red Zinfandel generally pairs well with meat because it has spicy flavors, sweet fruit and a full body that make it an ideal pairing for meat and BBQ in particular.

Yes to both! I actually did a video about that topic. th-cam.com/video/KQJXC8BZwus/w-d-xo.html
