I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour the waves
are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am miserable,
    what shall-
what should I do? And the sea says
    in its lovely voice:
Excuse me, I have work to do.
    - I Go Down To The Shore, Mary Oliver
“In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true. ... Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.”
― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism
“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”
    ― Ursula K. Le Guin

Lies are always part of a broader pattern. And, yet, none of you desert. All of you submit your way into tyranny, begging the Cluster B's in charge to be nice and nicer. And nothing changes. Cui bono? If not this: what? If not now: when? If not you: who?

Arendt's own racist beliefs are one of the best examples of the Banality of Evil that she ever offered. She is one among many figures that are a good lesson against elevating the philosophies which are intuitive to you to be "true," rather than helpful. I find it helpful to think of philosophical directives as a more highfalutin form of giving advice. Much advice isn't helpful, universal, or even asked for. And people are often bad at taking their own advice.
Similarly, the difference between the ideas which occur to philosphers and the ones produced by everyday people are largely aesthetic. Reputation, degrees, academic language, and book publishing can create a false wall of credentials that bely the fact that philosophy and thinking belong to everyone.

I watch these videos exclusively at night in order for them to have their full effect. Everyone else has gone to bed, I have nothing to do, and only my mind can occupy me now. I've been trying to limit how much I watch per night because I want them to last longer. It's like a sweet candy jar that you take small handfuls out of every now and then in order to keep the taste lingering as long as possible. Eventually my interests will turn elsewhere and I won't feel the same way about you or your channel anymore, but it's nice while I'm here. Thanks.

I have put a lot of thought into the idea of the human scope & how much information the human person can comprehend at one time, it almost feels like we have made an inhospitable world for ourselves because we are too well connected, & in shrinking the world out there down into a smartphone, we collectively forgot about the world outside our doorsteps & the communities we live in; I’ve seen advocates for the idea of looking at the cosmos & remembering that we are small, but we weren’t meant to look at things at the scale of the cosmos, we were meant to look at them from the scale of a human, a human who can only maintain close relationships with 120 people, a human who thinks 20 feet is a large drop, a human who can maybe make a 20 mile journey in a day; maybe the secret is to go back to a smaller scale, companies being content to serve a small area & provide for those who live there & let other companies take care of other areas, rulers being willing to rule a small dominion where they can care that much more personally for those under their care; maybe we can make the world better by going back to a human scale

Echos a lot of the same sentiments that I share. The world is indeed a confusing place, but proper perception management can help cut through the noise. It is easy to look at the world and the terrible atrocities that unfold on a daily basis and conclude with great confidence that there is nothing worth living for. Many, myself included, have fallen into the doldrums and must now spend more effort to get themselves out. A dark cynicism covers us like a great fog, preventing visibility of even the brightest light. Despite this collective misery, we are separated from one another by a black veil of our own creation. This problem can be surmounted: an application of mindfulness can go a long way to "correcting" our views on the world, and more importantly, on ourselves, so that we are not held in arrest by our bleak thoughts.
    Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
    Weep, and you weep alone;

Something I like to remind myself is that for 99.99% of human history flying was impossible. But as we'd sit beneath the trees and watch the birds chirping above us there was always hope that we could one day fly with the birds. It started with hot air balloons but little by little humanity began to believe in the reality of flight. Humanity's collective belief is incredibly powerful and can literally change the world around us. I want to believe in a good future and I believe most people do too.

a place to start is curiosity. if someone is refurbishing their house, ask them why? if they want it to look nice, ask them why that? it all leads back to primal human needs. maybe they want their family to have a good life. maybe they want to impress their neighbors and friends. some people aren't interested in deep conversations, but a lot of people are very interested in themselves and you'll never know if you don't ask them. active listening. this works for me at least.

after finishing this video, i have so many things i wanna talk about but don't know what to say.. I'll just stick to one thing, what you said at the end about art resonated with me a lot. I've been thinking about this very link throughout the video. The world might be getting worse, driven by the egotistical and evil side of Man (which one has to let loose and embrace if you wanna get to these positions, right..), but there's this thing that's greater than all of us here. But not greater in the sense of, we feel intimidated by it, on the contrary, something that allows us to realize that the world of Man holds a parallel feeling of beauty found in the works of nature. This thing, some sort of a butterfly that one cannot properly catch but only watch and feel on one's skin if you let it approach you (and that's all that one needs), is thus felt through nature and art. The simple and timeless beauty of Nature, which does not care about this side of Man that creates all the suffering to his fellow Man, and the beauty felt through art. The thing about the latter is that, it was created by a fellow Man. A breathing soul that was able to grasp this filament, this thread of pure lace, and share it to humanity. This act of sharing, inherently Human. The artist might create works that will go unnoticed, but it is interesting to notice thatthe artist is driven by this sense of sharing. Allowing humanity to have a chance of grasping the lace filament and reaching this higher state of beauty. Monet paintings, Gothic churches, the Sixtine Chapel ceiling, and, of course, music. Don't we say that works of art are timeless ? Doesn't it hold that very characteristic of the Universe's beauty ? So, art enables us to get closer to this thing greater than us. And i say thing because, i can't even describe what it is, but as Human beings we feel it. Art enables us Humans to take that very moment that makes us notice the butterfly flying nearby us, it is the thing that makes us pause an look around, It allows us to see what we cannot, or are disracted from. And if we fully open ourselves to it, if we genuinely allow ourselves to dive into these pure waters, be embraced by these perfumed clouds, the butterfy might even land on our body. Feelings are Art and Art is Feeling. I know that someone who lives in a warzone, or hasn't eaten in four days, or sleeps outside will naturally want his basic needs to be met first before experiencing an artistic experience. How can you take time to listen to Mozart when your daily background noise is the one of bombs ? How would you want to take an hour to dive into Monet paintings, when hunger has been eating you from the inside for 5 days ? It it is infinitely saddening. I am just trying to say that, there's always gonna be this one thing that this very same World has given birth to, that it might be getting worse, but it is not to throw out completely.
You know there's this story of this jewish pianist named Władysław Szpilman, during WW2 who, after being discovered by a german officer, he played for him a nocturne from composer Chopin, and the officer, struck in his deepest human string, decided to spare him and protect him until the end of the war. There's something always waiting to be looked at, held, and felt out there.
Anyway sorry this is all over the place, i just let my thoughts flow.
Before leaving you, i want to share 3 pieces of piano music from the composer i mentionned earlier: Frederic Chopin. I invite you to listen to his "Andante Spianato", his "Ballade no 4", and his "Mazurka op. 17 no.4". Beauty might be subjective, but i believe such works of art hold this universal feeling that touches the soul of Man, this greater soul that binds us all. Make us pause and realize that even if the world might be getting worse through the lense of our mortal existence, this same World holds this beauty that has reached our fellow Man, an artist, which decided to make the ultimate human act of sharing and help us feel what's inside of us, help us listen to what's constantly silenced by the modern world noise, and see the stars that are clouded by the darkness of lost individuals. Listen to those pieces of music and allow yourself to feel, dear people.

Saying shit like this, trying to make someone feel bad or embarrassed for taking a break in a life claimed to be in survival mode, is a sign that you need to really examine how you want to make other people feel in your day to day. So what if they’re lying? What if they’re not? Popping out of the woodwork to invalidate someone sucks. Being snarky isn’t cute, and you won’t feel any less alone or lacking when you do it. i think the biggest problem we face as a species is the understanding of our own emotions. we only recently had this industrial and information era, and now the overproduction and saturation of information is making us all depressed. and it's very bad now but maybe, just maybe, Gen Z is so wonderfully depressed a a whole that when we are the generation that's in power, we start prioritize mental health like never before (it's already happening, therapy is like way cooler than 10 years ago) and then once we fix our emotions within ourselves, we start being kinder to people around us because we start to see ourselves in them. they're not evil, they are broken. don't assume malice when you can assume ignorance or incompetence. the people that heal first start to create better resources for other with less accessibility and after some years/decades, we will collectively heal so much generational trauma. i know my grandparents didn't talk to their neighbors about their deep personal hardships - it was all more about keeping up appearances back then, and then at home you beat your wife. the internet is giving us a viewpoint we as humanity never saw before - real peoples real emotions across the whole world and seeing all that, over time it becomes more normalized. and we can start to learn about our emotions. i think the world is truly healing in the long run, but right now it's one of the "bad" waves that pushes the next huge "good change" waves

Small note in the grand scheme, but it's deeply questionable whether or not global poverty has actually decreased - most measures of global poverty are suspect at best (from what I remember, the World Bank did not adjust the lower limit for literal decades to account for inflation), and the institutions which purport to gives those measures have a clear and powerful bias to skew the data (it should surprise no one that the World Bank wants you to believe global capitalism decreases global poverty, despite clear evidence that capitalism increases income inequality in every individual country which gives it the old college try)

one of their metrics for being out of poverty - making 10 bucks a day. means you arent poor anymore. even if you had most of your necessities covered, that wouldnt even pay for the nutrition of a single child, let alone an adult. i have yet to meet a well off human who's mind is fully ready to take in the effects of our way of life on our species. i have met many who's heads are so far in the sand that they truly believe half of the american population can afford to travel outside of the country, when 85% of us cant afford more than one meal a day and 99% of those who are financially stable are there because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars invested into them.

As I learn more about my interests, I feel more depressed and hopeless about how to fix the problems. As I get buried in work and school, I feel lost in the relationships that I don't have the time to properly keep going. All of this has been exacerbated by an anxoous train kf thought about my future, about the future, and I didnt know how to distance myself from the ever growing feeling that the world is going to burn and there is nothing I fan do about it. Then I woke up this morning. The weather was the warmest it has been in months, the flowers outside my dorm are starting to peak through the dirt, and I was able to take a short walk between my hours kf classes and homework. Today I realized that I have put too much concern about whether the world is ending. I realized that the world is still here, the sky hasnt fallen, and I'll do my best ti be a sheperd of the earth during my time here. That is all I need to worry about, and having thay perspective, then seeing this upload has eased my anxiety a bit.

At the age of 41, I have observed how society has been declining in values and illusions. Social media, created to bring us together, has fostered individualism and dependence on the judgment of others. Governments have influenced young people, shaping their habits, aspirations and motivations.
Sex, once hidden, has now been normalized and commercialized, reducing men to slaves to their impulses, unable to handle the stress that sometimes comes with living in society and contribute positively. Video games have captured the attention of young people, diminishing respect for adults.
Those who should be adults often lack the ability to form their own judgment and define themselves in the world. Despite the changes, there are still intelligent people who reflect on life and find their own way in this chaotic world, full of criticism, manipulation and falsehoods

    - I think your videos, especially "life cheated us all", have been formative to my philosophy-the idea that we can focus on the good in the world, the simple joys of being alive, and build those for ourselves. i have this image in my head of my ideal life, with routine and community and no Big Lofty Goals but simply wanting to enjoy a life. and, you know, I could be doing more to work towards that-it doesn't feel Real, it feels out of reach for the person I am right now, but part of that, I think, is the need to become more like the person I want to be.
and part of that is, I think, vague fear about The State Of The World (tm). I don't know, blissful ignorance doesn't sound like something I want, but it doesn't feel sustainable to remain attached to the memetic firehose of ideas like "the world is going to burn" and "resource exhaustion" and &c &c &c. nor does the idea of simply wishing technological progress away seem realistic or particularly desirable. i guess what i'm saying is, I don't know how to Fix The World. but we can still work to improve it in the small ways we can impact, like helping our neighbors with the groceries, and take joy in the moments we can.
i mean, in the long run, as far as we know, entropy comes for us all sooner or later. none of us individually can stop this absolute nonsense train journey towards oblivion. but we can make it better for our fellow passengers and enjoy the sights along the way.

Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.

I wish they were readily available in my place.
Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac.
He's constantly talking about killing someone.
      He's violent. Anyone reading this
Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

most positive change is made by small consistent steps,
most horrible change is made by a single catastrophic step,
our minds suck at keeping statistics,
instead of counting instances correctly, we count emotionally charged ones more,
combine that with the media unconsciously discovering this through conversion rates,
and suddenly the word has going to shit.
p.s. I love what you said about a possible responsibility to point towards these illusions to make sure we don't 'manifest' a worse world.

Numbers on "progress" are not indicators on whether the world is getting "better", because, contrary to popular belief, you can't reduce reality to numbers. These numbers also tend to measure material "progress", not what _really_ matters to human beings. We're in the middle of what some call a meaning crisis. A lot of people are deeply miserable, if not straight up nihilistic. That's not the hallmark of a healthy society. It's the sign of a civilization coming to an end. Whether that's getting better or worse depends on what you think of that civilization.

Great comment, well put. Although we can see empirical evidence of social decline. Loneliness, depression and social anxiety seem to be on the rise among young Americans. The meaning crisis plays a huge role no doubt but there's also a pretty apparent decline in social skills among the younger generation and that lack of social skills is going to cripple their prospective confidence, assertiveness and ability to enter relationships.

@@miraclesage8622 Thats all part of the end stage "civilization" as well. Anxiety, depression, lack of social skills all that crap goes away once things get real. The crisis was always artificial

I would add that, statistics and indicators can easily reflect manipulation of data for an outcome that supports a specific narrative. Always ask for the raw data before putting all your belief into a statistic.

Never did I think a TH-cam video would change my worldview. Ever since quarantine started Nietzsche's words became my thoughts and beliefs and while some of his views I can still agree with, most of them are too negative of a view on the world. We live in a world where within milliseconds you can talk to someone across the globe and through a pretty low level of tech knowledge you can watch and read whatever's been put out there. Yet we still stick to the same comforts and beliefs as if all we had were the people in our town. I'm gonna start challenging my own beliefs and try my best to listen instead of instantly denying any opposing ones.
    Great video :)
