so Japanese isn't challenging then?
...just kidding. awesome video like always btw. you did a good job showing off each language here
Great video as usual.
Always love the enthusiasm for Japanese.
Love the language.
But Sweden is not number 1 in the world for quality of life.
That is Finland.
5 years in a row I am afraid my good man.

Japanese people don’t really expect the foreigners to speak their language, so they get extremely excited when you do. It’s a very forgiving language, so even if you make a couple of grammatical mistakes they will probably understand you.
They are extremely sensitive about making mistakes so they look as if they avoid foreigners but it’s actually avoiding making mistakes in English. So when you speak even only limited basic Japanese, they’ll open up and become overjoyed. Good luck!
No joke about the mistakes thing. I was an English teacher briefly in Chiba, and a lot of the kids would hesitate to answer questions just out of fear of embarrassment. Even my hosts would be shy to speak English, even though they were reasonably fluent. But when I would speak Japanese, they would very gently correct me of course, but it seems they were just genuinely happy to hear a foreigner speak their language.
You won’t be be as lucky going to France lol
Wow, I got JLPT N2 5 years ago and go to twitcast, and Japanese are less polite or friendly once your Japanese gets beyond a certain level, they are always finding excuses to belittle you or to not befriend you, they are nice to tourists, it seems like Japanese will befriend you but then they will give excuse after excuse to prevent the relationship from developing. I grew up on anime, manga, J-games, but I found the Japanese people extremely cold and unfriendly, and I find Chinese are much more genuine with foreigners. Especially Japanese women will never respond to messages and have a very narrow way of thinking。The Japanese were much nicer back in 2010 than they are now I believe as well.
I was shopping at my local supermarket where I live in Japan yesterday and this lady just randomly asked me why I didn't pick up the food on sale... she physically took a step back when I responded in Japanese as she didn't expect me to understand what she said. Had an interesting conversation about her using radio to speak English with people in the US and UK (she's in her 80s so this might have been back in the 50s).
I'm Japanese.what you are saying is correct haha
When we Japanese speak English, we don't speak it aggressively because we don't want to make mistakes in grammar or pronunciation.I'm very happy to see foreigners studying Japanese!!It's okay if you're wrong because it sounds cute.I want to be able to speak English.I want to call a foreigners friend
That's a huge surprise to see Romanian on the list. And since this video was uploaded on 1st December-Romania's National Day, I see it as a beautiful present to all the Romanians out there.
Mulțumesc!🇷🇴🎉🤗

Truly something special that we hardly get enough recognition and well deserved to be known by more people. We should never neglect our eastern romance brothers and sisters.
I'm actually learning English🇬🇧
In a future i want learning 3 languages like:
-Japanese🇯🇵 (I want work and live in japan)
-Italian🇮🇹 (For Travel)
-Korean🇰🇷 (For Travel)
-Mandarin🇨🇳 (Probably for search Work in China)
I'm 16yr old and i have many dreams and objetives.
Are you good at languages. You've chosen some very difficult ones, esp. Mandarin. What for?
i´m learning english and i want laern this languages too, and french.
Maybe you should polish your English first. Take one language at a time and become solid in it. Otherwise, it will be a macaroni of language swirling in your head.
@@luaroli Improve your English first. It's learn these languages
Just to correct your mistakes:
In THE future I want TO LEARN...
I want TO work...
Probably TO search FOR work...
Keep up the good work, you're getting there!
Lived in China and Japan 20 years and learnt both languages. Can you PLEASE do a session on how EASY Mandarin grammar is because the writing scares people off. There's only 4 tones which people say are a hassle. But honestly speaking, Mandarin was a walk in the park compared to the mental gymnastics you have to do with Japanese. I do however LOVE the Japanese language so much.
I'm pretty tone deaf, tried to learn Mandarin but sadly never got beyond basic tourist level. Also terrible at karaoke for the same reason.
I’ve spoken it since I was a child and I’ve noticed that people who regurgitate this opinion almost never speak natural sounding Chinese. I’d agree that it’s harder to be technically wrong in a textbook sense but it’s just as easy as any other language to sound wrong to natives used to the way natives say things. Maybe you’re an exception idk but it seems to me that this mindset leads a lot of people to neglect learning the way people actually say things and pat themselves on the back while sounding strange because it isn’t technically wrong grammatically. I get the intention of not wanting to scare people off of the language but I think this talking point being popularized does at least as much damage to learners as it does good.
@@user-fz8fp4nf6t Yeah, while the grammar and tones aren't too hard, there is definitely this "certain" alien feeling when speaking the language. It may be easy to get only the tones, but combining them with the correct pronunciation AND the natural way of speaking, to achieve the flow of the native speakers is VERY hard. It's probably the biggest problem, alongside the endless proverbs and cultural contexts/references. Not to mention how fast your confidence will dissipate after getting into a taxi and trying to talk with the driver 😆.
Nonsense, Mandarin is harder to speak than Japanese
@@belachaneyYes
If you live in the United States learn Spanish.
Maybe even French.
"Jesus didn't speak no Spanish."
@lazstan Any not no! Although Spanish allows double negatives English rarely does.
And American Sign Language. Along with Spanish, you can work as a tri-lingual interpreter. Never be out of work.

The languages I've been focusing on have been Swedish 🇸🇪, Scottish Gaelic 🏴, Georgian 🇬🇪, Bulgarian 🇧🇬, Russian 🇷🇺, and Turkish 🇹🇷. I dabble in many others and will probably add some Kazakh 🇰🇿 to that list since I plan on moving to Kazakhstan for some time. So many languages, so much time, and so much overwhelm. ❤️😂
Very interesting!Especially that some are not that common on foreign language courses.I grew up speaking Spanish and English.Iam interested in French,Portuguese, and German.I could see myself speaking else though.Especially,If it is the native language of my future wife.
How do you learn georgian i want to learn it aswell
why are you moving to Kazakhstan lol 😂

I think Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin are the ones that will get you around in the world. Personally Korean and Swahili are languages that I find beautiful and fascinating
I think Russian is more international than Mandarin, because Mandarin is only used in China
Agreed, also it uses cyrilic alphabet which is used in a lot of languages@@mirae9163
@@mirae9163 Unfortunately, Russian is mostly used only in post Soviet countries (and there are big diasporas in Germany and Israel). But yeah, it's still more than the only China, but as I know some countries around China also speak Chinese, for example Malaysia or Singapore
@@kokomi228 Unfortunately? There are 15 post Soviet countries in the world. And Mandarin is used only 3 countries (plus Malaysia and Singapore), so Russian is 5 times more international than Mandarin.
It depends on what you're looking for. Singapore + China has more economic power than all these 15 countries all together, but when it comes to exploring new cultures, then yes, Russian is more useful@@mirae9163
As Korean, I’m so glad that Korean is on your list! We will be very happy if the traveler who is visiting Korea speaks our language!!! Also I think Korean is easy to learn if you love to watch K-drama
Now Korean is a necessity because you guys are making mind-blowing dramas 😹 there are plenty of Korean language academies in my city and now I'm going to join one next month.
why are koreans so shy when it comes to making foreign friends. i wanna practice my korean with you ahahah
Hey I am learning Korean and ya it's pretty fun and easy I thought of visiting Korea with my friends after my studies

Thank you so much for the video! I have been studying Japanese for a few months now but keep losing motivation from people online saying it's pretty useless and difficult. I know it will take me years but in the end, im pretty sure I'll be glad I started pretty young!♥︎♡
My daughter and I spent 2 weeks this past summer traveling around Romania. We liked it so much we plan to go back next year. It's a beautiful country!
I’m learning Russian, hope to move there in the future. Spent two months there last year and loved it
Поддерживаю вас )
where are you from ? Hello from Russia !
My goal for ending of 2024. Master these five languages or atleast become intermediate: 🇩🇪🇪🇸🇳🇱🇮🇹🇫🇷
Maybe even Russian🇷🇺 and Polish🇵🇱 too!!!
In one year??? Please set a realistic goal so that you do not disappoint yourself.
@@phoenixknight8837 I’m learning German and already reaching intermediate level. I have 8 hrs of free time😏
Better get started!! 😄
Mastering a language as in becoming fluent takes years. Becoming intermediate doesn’t take nearly as long imo
7 different languages in one year isn’t possible unless you really dedicate yourself.
You don’t want to become burnt out.
Find a language you REALLY *really* like and focus on that one or maybe one or two more if you have a whole bunch of time. Just trust me on this one.
You also will have way better results in the languages that you do learn! If you try doing what you claim to do you will just have very basic skills in a bunch of languages which you would most likely forget
ohh,as a native speaker of russian,i can only wish you good luck, our language is over hard, even all russians don't know his language in a good level...(sorry for my English,in the future i am trying to up my English level knowledge)
Im already learning korean, since 2022, i have only 3/6 level. 한국어를 배운지 일년이 됬는데 한국말로 잘 못 해요 💔 앗, 한국말로 잘 하는 것이 제 꿈이에요!!
I'm learning Japanese right now and it *is* a lot of fun! Like learning any new language, you get such a cool look/glimpse into another culture & way of seeing the world around you!
Yeah Japanese is really fun! Have you had a chance to visit Japan yet? I don't know if this interests you, but I developed a website with AI chatbots with dictionary integration and furigana. I basically just want to give access to my product to some people for free in exchange for a review or feedback if you don't find it helpful in any way. Would you be interested in trying it? Please let me know if so, otherwise best of luck with your Japanese learning journey!
@@shugyosha7924I'd be interested in trying it out if you don't mind!
My grandmother’s first language was Swedish! She spoke it in her own sing song way. She taught me how to count. The number 8 is a killer😊😂
Swedish 🔥😎
It's my main focus at the moment! What a beautiful language 🤩
Same, I've been studying it for a couple of years (alongside several others) and planning on moving to Sweden within the next couple of years. It's such a gorgeous language. 💙🇸🇪
Same here. I do have some basics but had to take a break from Sweidsh to make room for other languages but it's time to seriously dust off Swedish grammar books and to get my Swedish to a decent advanced level. So next year will be devoted to working on Swedish.
Cool video as always! I really like how you describe languages, makes me want to learn all of them😁I already have one of your books, Short Stories in German for beginners, and I love it! Can't wait for one in mandarin chinese. Thanks a lot for making these videos
Me too :)
I actually might listen to you and start learning Romanian AGAIN. 😅 I used to study Romanian at university and since I'm a Bulgarian I can confirm there are a lot of Slavic words in Romanian. It's definitely so interesting and original. You could feel the Roman/Latin vibe, the Slavic influence and some Romanian vibe that doesn't resemble anything else at once. In my opinion the grammar isn't too difficult but of course there are some specific grammar rules that don't exist in the other Roman languages. I spent about 3-4 years learning it at university and I stopped learning it about 2 years ago. After I graduated I focused on my Greek and Turkish but in fact I had a goal to come back to Romanian before the end of this year. I don't know if I'll do it this month or in January but I guess it's time for me to reconnect with Romanian. 🇷🇴
I think listening to your intuition is a great thing to do! Good luck!
Yay, from a Romanian I hope you do return to the language 😊
Have fun with it! Especially since it's close, it'll make other romance languages easier!
@@alexandace9550 Thanks a lot! 😊 Actually I don't speak any other Roman languages. I'm learning Turkish and Greek. Also I used to study Albanian at university (together with Greek and Romanian). But Romanian is the most interesting Roman language to me. It's worth learning it. Maybe if I decide to learn Portuguese someday, it will help me a little. 😁
@@loraivanova8635 Romance languages
I DID NOT expect Romanian to be part of the list 💀 Thanks for putting it up there! It's a pretty easy language, at least when it comes to writing and reading
Really? Is it that easy?.. Should i start? 🙂😀
The grammar IS ABSOLUTE HELL. And I say this as a native Romanian speaker.
@@ur_fav_julie the grammar is very hard, but the language does have a lot of words similar to romance/slavic languages. if you feel ready, go for it!
Haha, thank you Ollie for including Romanian from all us Romanians! 😊😊😊 Its a fun and very easy language that more people would enjoy if they tried. Also there is a thriving Romanian community online with lots of content to enjoy 😉
I'm studying other languages now but it's on my list of languages I want to learn, as an Italian I find it very similar whenever I read or hear it so it shouldn't be as difficult to learn as other languages!
Hi Carmen ... I started romanian about 6 months ago ... I love it . I live in UK and there are a lot of romanians here ..I'd love to be able to chat to them not in english !!
Do you know of any romanian internet meeting places for learners ?
As a Portuguese I understand Romanian pronounciation better than French,
Cumprimentos aos meus irmãos latinos!!!
@@danstobbart4406 sorry i don't k ow, but good luck with language learning!
I started learning it a few weeks ago at university (I study Spanish and we had to pick a second romance language to take language classes in, and I chose Romanian), and I love it! It sounds beautiful and I find the influences from other languages super interesting. Plus, I get to learn about Romanian culture!
Hi ! I'm so glad with your 5 languages list choice, this is original. And indeed for me, Romanian is so fascinating. And I'd like to go deeper in the Korean culture as well, because it's often just seen by foreigners as "Seoul-country with pop modern culture" and that's it, which is not, of course, the case !
💟
And here I am! Knowing damn well that I'm going to stick to my Italian and Norwegian, but watching the video mesmerized. At least I'm subscribing now. So see you all around!
im so glad i committed to learning japanese a long time ago, its been a fantastic journey and ive met many wonderful people because of it, i still have a long way to go before i can live there and hold a good job but i have friends and a girlfriend maybe someday wife because of it, the hardest part is the first 2-3 months when nothing makes sense but as soon as you get past that its much more enjoyable😁
This year I am mastering my English and Russian and additionally I am studying three launguages :) German, Italian and Japanese but with more focus on German language.
Loved the vid Olly and glad to see Hindi get a mention. Next stop is you making a StoryLearning course and learning it!
Hindi is great language to learn. Only issue is still the scarcity of learning materials for English speakers who are complete beginners. I do believe that people from India could produce more of them to make others learn their language more easily. What given the demographic of India would benefit the future of the country. In my country we already have huge immigration of people from India but both immigrants and our own native citizens stumble upon a language barrier. With more materials for learners of Hindi available online communication in our local communities with immigrants from India would work much easier. What would benefit our business and cultural contacts.
I am currently learning Mandarin Chinese 🇹🇼
I am planning to learn:
- Japanese 🇯🇵 (it's on your list)
- Korean 🇰🇷 (it's on your list)
- Malay 🇲🇾 (After I finish with the first three)

I also already know Lebanese Arabic however I am looking forward to get better at Modern Standard Arabic
Try Turkish as well, you'll find it very similar after those :)

@@Magyarosivatuvaluk I haven't started the lessons yet. I never thought I'd ever learn Arabic, but Lebanese Arabic is one of the most beautiful languages I've ever heard! Thank you so much for your offer. I'm certain I'm going to need it! Thanks so much! 🙏😇
Yes Romanian!! I was so happy to see it listed as your number 1 pick! Now I just have to study harder. 😆
So glad you mentioned Romanian....we lived there off and on for several years, and I was able to learn it fairly quickly. If you know any Latin, Spanish or Italian, it's not that difficult!
With my basic latin and spanish skills plus having french as a first language I once accidently found out that I could actually understand the gist of a romanian text without having ever see or heard the language before so pretty accessible for people who already speak a latin language (or a few of them).
In the same vein sweden is close to norwegian (that is a little simpler to learn for english/french speaker) both nice languages to learn
Would love to learn korean cuz it's the new asian-cool (been watching a few very good korean drama on Netflix).
I'm currently studying abroad in Japan and minoring in Japanese. Definitely was happy to see it on the list!
im from india if you learn hindi you can also communicate with bordering countries like pakistan.most of the peoples of bangladesh can also understand hindi but i dont even know hindi yet im from south side of india and now learning hindi

Olly, I've been checking your site for well over a year hoping you would offer a Romanian course. I'd love to increase my French and German some day , but I have a real vocational need now for Romanian as my next language,.
Well, I liked how you started with Japanese and even though I've been to Japan 7 times (hoping to make it 8 in April 2024) there's no way my Japanese is anywhere near your level from 10 years ago. I will say I'm a step above knowing just enough to get around so I figured I'd start with your Intermediate level. After diving right in, so far it looks like I've made the right choice. Listened to the story the first time, got about 50% of it, listened to it again, got 60% overall and a third to 4th time got me to about 75%, admittedly with the help of Google Translate with the words I don't know. All this before even looking at the transcript (my reading is rather rusty, but I know I need to look at it!) and will probably NOT look at the English Translation unless I truly get lost. I'm hoping that won't happen.
Easy. The best language to learn is the one you want to learn. Reasons, culture, travel, connecting to your heritage. Connecting to native speakers that you work with. Engage your brain. For learning sake. For fun. An educational requirement. You can do 15 minutes a day. You could do an hour. Any language to any level. Start most any language for free. Just do it.
Nice video, I’m fluent in Japanese so it’s cool that I got one from the list of 5 languages , and I’m learning Portuguese which #5 reminded me of so it’s interesting. Also doing mandarin Chinese (did some Cantonese before as well) sometimes, surprised no Chinese languages made this list xD
Cool language choices though 🎉
I mean, according to Wall street narrative you bail on anything China related right now, they've literally become "untouchables" right now in PC culture in the west now. I just came back from a trip to Beijing though, gotta say, whatever stuff and problems media such as wall street journal has been feeding us are grossly exaggerated, Chinese is still a useful language to learn, and China is still a viable market.

I studied Romanian for 6 month in the US followed by 6 months in Romania and was surprisingly fluent by the end. I now feel I’ve forgotten everything and you’ve inspired me to make it my 2024 goal (maybe with a bit of a head start!) I did think “dor” was from Latin like “dolor” in Spanish. Interesting that it’s from Dacian. And doesn’t it (or didn’t it) have 5 noun cases? Nominative, accusative, dative, genitive, and instrumental?
hey, Romanian as a second language here, yes, Romanian has 5 cases: nominative accusative dative genitive and vocative :)
@@kevinkn454 Indeed, however, genitive and dative are identical in form, and the same goes for nominative and accusative (the accusative only has some prepositions in front of it, but it's the same as nominative). So you only have to learn 3...

I'm learning Korean right now! In 2024 though, I'm probably going to start learning Dutch since if everything goes according to plan I'll be going to the Netherlands for an internship for a couple month starting in May, so I'd rather learn some Dutch beforehand.
I clicked the video, and surprise at the end, never in a million years expecting Romanian!! So for me one down :)) very professional and accurate video!! The couple at the end are two Americans youtubers that moved and are living in Romania. Good luck! And if you read this, no matter who you are, i want you to know you are a special person and life is beautiful!
You are beautiful too!
The best part of learning languages is the possibility to discover tons of interesting things. Actually I'm dealing with my 6th language and i would say that nothing is impossible. I'm bilingual in Ukrainian and russian, through the years i improved english, learned italian and spanish. Now studying french, and for sure will learn another.
As a Swede who know spanish and have been learning japanese for over a year. I see this as an absolute win! 😂😂
My autodidactic language learning journey:
Since childhood, this child (me) has native languages such as Balinese and Indonesian. I learned Malay easily because of the cartoons I watched since kindergarten. I studied English when I was in elementary school, ofc there were a few difficulties because learning in class was only once a week without tutoring (actually it could be through films or games) After middle school, I continued learning Japanese through anime or videos that use subtitles (so that it's easy to understand the pronunciation and meaning) then I learned hiragana, Katakana, and kanji. After that I wanted to be able to learn Korean, just to understand the meaning of the conversation of kdramas without subtitles and that was quite helpful even though the Hangul writing was a bit lacking. Currently I'm practicing Mandarin conversation through apps and watching c-dramas which made me interested in this language.
Before learning a new language, you must know the goals and benefits in the future so that it is easier to understand the language.
As a Romanian, I'm proud of it being mentioned in the video!❤
Clicking for learning a new language and seeing romanian is such a surprise for me(because I'm a romanian)and I'm so happy that this language is in this list.
I plan on moving to Sweden sometime when I'm 30, so I'm already learning Swedish, but the others have been on my list of languages I might want to learn. Except Japanese, I'm definitely learning that.
Edit: I moved Romanian to the top of my might want to learn list. That means it's competing for the tenth language I want to learn and almost winning. But Indonesien is very tempting too.
Sweden has so high crime level. Gun Violence and bands
Ainu is on my language learning list as well as getting back into Japanese but I will be adding another Indigenous language as well. I really like the sound of Quechua after hearing it in one of the Tomb Raider games.
I am learning Portuguese so I can learn Cloo as well as other Amazonian Indigenous languages. I also had been curious about it vs. Spanish esp. hearing that it was more difficult to learn.
😂😂

The last thing I expected was to hear my language get mentioned at number #1. 😅
Thank you for the mention and great video.
Im actually learning japanese , but you mentioned other languages like hindi and korean and im very interested in them now. 😊 Right and theres also swedish but for some reason I dont think ill ever learn that... theres other better european languages I want to learn.
Wow!! Mr Olly You are a True language teacher without any exggeration. I admit it. Thank you. Oh!! Have you read the comics yotsubaran? ❤❤ Great!!
What, no Finnish? I really wish it would get more love. Yes it's difficult but it's such a lovely language that is well worth learning. For me personally, it has given me so much.
In Olly's last video!! :) th-cam.com/video/2rxA-GBYJb0/w-d-xo.html
Wow, Olly! This video is a journey through the fascinating universe of languages, showcasing their cultural nuances. Your creative tone of presentation makes everything feel lighter. Oh, and we can't forget that Brazilian Portuguese is also an incredibly rich language, waiting to be explored! 🇧🇷✨ #plainportuguese
Japanese and Korean are very common languages. If you wanna explore something new in 2024, you can try these languages-
1. Persian 🇮🇷
2. Danish 🇩🇰
3. Bengali 🇧🇩
4. Hungarian 🇭🇺
5. Finnish 🇫🇮
@@acupofpusanlanguage Dude, nowadays Korean is one of the most popular languages that Language learners choose to learn. Even in Duolingo- Korean is now the 4th most popular after Spanish, French and Japanese.
@@acupofpusanlanguage No. I didn't learn Korean. I can speak English, French, Spanish, German, Persian, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi and Urdu. Among them- Bengali is my native language and I've learnt the others by myself.
Hey Olly appreciate the video. I just had a couple questions as a more beginner language learner (working on Spanish right now). What are good ways to work on English to Spanish? I’m not sure what to work on/practice to get better at this. And also what did you use to be able to listen to very fast Spanish? Like I want to understand better what they speak in day to day life you know, most videos I’ve found online are too easy and slow then I don’t understand what they speak like day to day really fast. Thanks.
Ok, seeing my native on this list was a shock :). Thanks, I guess it is a language to learn just for the sake of learning it, wonder how many people will try to pick it up after this clip.
18:09 That Hungarian word pălincă is actually of Slavic origin too. It comes from the Slavic "paliti" = burn, distil. Therefore pălincă is literally (as a product) and etymologically the equivalent of the English "brandy", a word derived from Dutch "branden" = burn, distil.
It’s pálinka, but otherwise you are right.
Sir, we are learning Korea bc we need to understand BTS. Thats it. 💜
I think these are all interesting but I also fancy with Portuguese 👀
Funnily, it's harder to learn that than Japanese for me as a native Turkish speaker 😅
Wouldn't mind a video suggestion solution on ways you can keep a conversation going if you stumble in your targetted language I think for many people out there give up or lose hope in learning targeted language " in their minds their not good enough". Have reasons like " I can't pronounce this or that word properly" - to be honest if not in most languages their will be some words that will be tough to pronounce properly.
More of a sidenote motivational tips to keep you moving forward when the target language it can get extremely difficult.
Thank you for including my channel in your video :)
Japanese is such a beautiful language and I love showing people how wonderful it is to learn and be able to speak Japanese 🇯🇵
Now I want to learn all the languages you showed us 😂
Yes
What a lovely surprise to see Swedish on the list! Thank you for appreciating our language and demonstrating our two "tones" (which can vary depending on dialects). Additionally, we have 9 letters for vowels, but around 17 different sounds for vowels. So it's a great language if you are interested in different sounds and rhythms. :)
I am learning swedish for 4 years so I am done 😅 OK I think I will add Romanian 😅 there are alrerady a lot of romanian people in my work and many of them dont speak neither Czech nor English, I am going for it.
I was watching this in order to get some inspiration for my next challenge but I never expected Romanian to be the surprise. As a Romanian, I can tell you that we appreciate a lot when foreigners are using even "Buna ziua" or "Multumesc" in conversations. We know Romanian language is a difficult one but if you are dreaming about discovering our natural wonders, definitely you will need some Romanian words. In case anyone here is interested, there are few series done by Charlie Ottley (Wild Carpathia, Flavours of Romania) in which he presents Romania
I started learning Japanese earlier this year (in October), I am absolutely fascinated by it

Those languages have a small number of speakers (excepting HI and partially JP), and all are country specific. Learning those languages will be meaningful if you have a particular and great interest in any of these cultures.
I'm native ES speaker and personally, despite being a romance language, i don't find practical to learn RO or even IT, but I learn FR and PT, because my interest is on number of speakers and countries.
Yeah, putting Romanian as #1 best language to learn in 2024 was quite random.
Exactly. And I think instead of learning the most spoken language whose population is only in some specific country, learning the most widespread is better.
You should try Russian as it's spoken in many countries outside Russia. There's a lot of good content in Russian on internet and the culture there is really fascinating. They have great films and music.
@@Danilo-O I'm already trying, I really love music in Russian. 🎶🤟🏻
Я уже пробую, я очень люблю музыку по русский.

Wonderful 🎉 Thanks 🌷🤗
I’ve started learning Scottish Gaelic, after my trip to Scotland. I would love to learn each of my ancestral languages . I would love to have more resources for some of the African languages too, but Africa in general seems so tossed to the side. 😢 I know west Africa is really up and coming though and it would be great to learn some of those ancestral languages too, not just my European ancestral languages (how many times can I say ancestral languages in one post? 😂)
I saw a video from a tour guide in Glasgow, who was speaking Scots Gaelic to a Norwegian tourist, who was speaking Norwegian back to her, and they were communicating very well.
@@schoolingdiana9086 They're in a totally different language family.
I’m learning Khmer this year! 2 months in so far so good ❤
Suo sdey 🥰
Thanks for an interesting video, Olly. :)
Do you know of any courses for these languages where you don't learn their 'alphabet'? Just learn to speak them.
Might you make a video about 5? languages that use same alphabet (more or less) as English?
I really like Pimsleur. The courses are purely oral. There’s some optional reading and writing at the end of each course, but I skip it. I think a lot of people anymore think they need to get a new app for learning a language. Pimsleur has been around for longer, and it’s still excellent.
good points I got from your vd❤🎉
Languages I’m currently learning:
Korean🇰🇷, Spanish🇲🇽🇪🇸, Brazilian Portuguese🇧🇷, Japanese🇯🇵, Mandarin Chinese🇨🇳, French🇫🇷, Haitian Creole🇭🇹, Swahili🇰🇪, and German🇩🇪
-
I speak/know 🇰🇷🇧🇷🇲🇽🇪🇸🇭🇹(🇯🇵)
-
I am 🇭🇹(mom) and 🇲🇽(dad)-American.

After I get all of these languages (outside of the one I listed I speak/know) to a B2 level MINIMUM, I’ll start Finnish 🇫🇮 again, while also starting Egyptian Arabic🇪🇬, Hindi🇮🇳, and Thai🇹🇭.
UPDATE: i started Italian 🇮🇹 ! I’m actually learning this language without anyyyy books. I want to see how far i can go without any~

Romanian is lowkey the coolest Romance language. Every word sounds either like a song (“lalelel” “soarele” “durerea” “mămăliga”) or they sound like powerful slavic energy (“războiul” “trebuie” “zborul” “droaie”) and the verbs and nouns conjugate and decline like your typical Romance language, but they do it in fun and exciting was. No more “add and s” for the second person, say hi to changing “c” to a “ch” sound, or “g” to a “j” sound.
Lol
Really surprised Romanian made it to the list and learning it since my ancestors are Romanian surpassing 17th century really long time ago. The only Eastern Romance language spoken by majority today! Romanian great union day was on December 1 and they emphasize the importance of preserving the language although I often complain it is not getting enough world's recognition and thank you from the bottom of my heart Olly Richards for bringing recognition not only to my my ancestors who fought so hard to preserve it and well deserved but also for realizing the unique characteristics of the language, people and culture! Long live Romania. Traiasca Romania!
Many thanks for the data
im learning RUSSIAN in 2024
As a Cantonese speaking guy in Hong Kong, I am planning to learn South East Asian languages; choosing among Tagalog, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese.
I’m japanese so japanese is out, but thanks Olly! I’m glad that you put it on the list.
As a Swede I’m so happy to see and hear my native tongue in this video
I went from hearing Japanese to hearing something I understand
Interesting that Hindi and Indo-European language having an SOV sentence structure like Japanese and Turkish.
I have tried Romanian before and like Bulgarian I tried and stopped, I just can’t get the hang of these suffix articles.
I tried to learn Romanian six months ago but I gave up and I switched to French. Romanian is actually easier than French for someone who speaks Spanish, English, Portuguese and Italian but it's very hard to find learning material.
Many Romanian singers sing in French, Spanish or English rather than in Romanian.
How am I going to learn the language if the people who speak it don't promote it?
Also, to prove my point, the name of the girl speaking Romanian is Raluca and the video is more than six years old. Olly could not find anything less outdated.
You're right. I also wanted to learn Romanian but decided to go for German because you can find tons of German lessons for free online or sometimes you have to pay for them. You're exactly correct about the music. So many Romanian singers prefer to sing in other language but their own.

Try movies plus Romanian is available on quite a few language apps
If I'm ever not broke, I'll be getting the Storied package for Korean. I recently became interested in the language because I stumbled into learning a bit about Hangul and found it to be hands down the best writing system I've ever encountered, and considering I was also fascinated by the Shavian alphabet for English, that's saying something lol. I've found a lot of conflicting info about Hangul, however. There's the version you covered with 24 characters, but also something I don't know if there's an official name for, but I have taken to calling Hangul extended, which includes those 5 double consonants you mentioned but also double vowels and other diphthongs and such, bringing it up to 19 consonants and 21 vowels. Maybe that's the wrong way to think about it, but I am just starting so I hope to have it figured out eventually lol.
Thanks for including Hindi i am glad to see you had included hindi in this really happy to see as a my language is hindi
Well in India their is more than 100+ language people speak
Reading these comments, it's really nice hearing about all the different languages people are learning. It's honestly refreshing compared to other places where I've seen people "compete" over which languages are "better" and of course just racism in general. Language learning is a beautiful thing no matter which one it is!
What would you say if your family doesn't like the language you are learning?
Yes, it´s so refreshing to see so many people connect via learning new languages. It´s such a beatiful experience! As you said, there are unfortunately places where many people seem to have a different opinion on that. I once even found a short video that asked people to comment which language they consider useless...There was literally a war going on in the comment section of people putting down other people´s languages, while considering the political status (and whatelse...) of the given language. It was honestly so disgusting to witness that.
Each language has importance, as it contains undispensable elements of the country´s history and culture. There is so much more to it! Language is supposed to unite people but certain individuals tend to forget about how much of a treasure a language really is.
@@hi_iamiau Honestly, just do what you feel is right. If your family is against you learning a certain language, then it´s actually their problem, not yours. There is nothing wrong about learning a new language and getting to know another culture. Stay truthful to yourself and your interests. Don´t back away from it, only because someone disapproves of your choice. Learning a new language is such a beautiful thing to do. I can only recommened to go for it :)
@@coco_1002 If your intention was to make me cry, you succeeded hahaha ❤️ thank you so much... Before I didn't say anything, I just swallowed. But I will try to make my voice more active, thank you.

Amazing video with a lot of interesting information! Ja, det stämmer, svenska är roligt!
I'm a portuguese native speaker (from Brazil), and I started studying Korean 1 year and half ago. I'm not fluent in english yet, so I'm trying to improve it, and also trying to study more Spanish (it's a language very close to portuguese, so it's easier to learn)
