I'm a Deaf person. In my opinion, a Deaf interpreter is most effective when the speaker is not talking too fast, to give the Deaf interpreter time to think about how to improve on the ASL of the hearing interpreter. But sometimes a hearing interpreter interprets something too literally or not visually enough. It's very hard to do a great job on the fly because in ASL, there are many possible ways to interpret the same sentence. Just a small example. If a hearing interpreter signs the following sentence too literally, it does not make sense. Speaker: I would like to go to the ice cream shop. Hearing interpreter: I WILL LIKE GO ICE CREAM STORE. A Deaf person might think, "Huh? This person will love going to the ice cream shop in the future? They don't already love doing that now?" This original interpretation is not actually right. DEAF interpreter: I WANT GO ICE CREAM STORE. THAT interpretation makes actual sense.
it strongly depends on the "feeding" interpreter. If they do a good job, the CDI can do a better job. I think BOTH interpreters should be equally praised or critiqued. Front-facing with Deaf interpreter is great, but that "coin" has two sides. Both.

ALS must be a new sign language, huh? It’s ASL (American Sign Language) and not ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
