Chatham Island, awesome spot. Pity you guys didn't have a boat the back of the Island is amazing.
I need a boast exclusively for this kind of thing...
I know where that is Cam. I first saw this on Google maps about 10 years ago, and there were no photos of it, so me and a mate actually hiked there and back from MB carpark in an afternoon, as we had no 4WD. Walking on all that soft sand for the best part of 20km was pretty brutal from memory. I think I managed to get the first photos of it on Google maps. I hadn't long quit smoking, and the hike back up to the top almost killed me.
If you want another adventure in the area, I recommend driving to the inlet estuary further north. It is a secluded spot in a valley. Stunning. Track is closed seasonally, so check before you go.

Just be careful of the waterlogged sand close to the water. I found out the hard way when I visited. Thank god there were two guys there with maxtrax, who more importantly knew how to use them.
The 4wd can turn into a 2 ton brick pretty quick...
