      At no point did James say that. That said, Abbott is in the situation she's in because of her own controversial actions. I don't like Elphicke whatsoever, and I won't defend her past words. I'm uneasy with her admission to the party, but you're only looking at it from one point of view. Politically Starmer was smart to accept her, as someone who wants to govern for the whole country and not just the Owen Joneses of the land. My priority is for a Labour win and for the Tories to be out of power. Can you argue against that, unless you actually want the Tories to win yet again?

Parties must win votes, they aren't entitled to them. Though I am sure every politician ever to have existed would love to save to the people: "if you don't support me then there's something wrong with you".
    It's a calculated move (and one I agree will probably work) to toss aside the concerns of one group of voters and actively pursue the concerns of a different, larger group. But if it *_*doesn't*_* work then only a cynical POS could possible turn to voters they ignored and say: "yeah I know you didn't agree with my policies, but you need to vote for me anyway".

      Welcoming in every tory mp who's been a part of the last 14 years of failure and chaos?, yeah, nah. You literally said that he told you last week, so Natalie Elphicke had ZERO sway in him voting for Labour. Infact i'd argue it was because of people like her that he decided to run a mile the other way
      What about Labours 2019 voters?, funny how they just get ignored eh. Welcoming in people from the hard right like Elphicke whilst lefties like Corbyn and Abbott have been kicked out, what message does that send them?

    • @DrippyWaffler
      @DrippyWaffler 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because winning the 3% of tory. votes at the expense of 10% of labour votes is a losing strategy.

    • @michaelhoskins6579
      @michaelhoskins6579 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @DrippyWaffler Under FPTP you can afford to lose votes in areas where they weigh Labour votes instead of counting them. In 2017 and 2019 Labour votes piled up in cities and metro areas, but were lacking almost everywhere else. That's why we lost. Starmer is pursuing a deliberate strategy of vote efficiency. Look where Labour is currently winning votes in by elections, local elections and look where they are losing votes. It's a similar strategy of vote efficiency and effective distribution which won Labour a majority of 66 on just 35.2% of the vote in the 2005 GE.

    Regarding the conditioning thing.
    The gentleman giving the explanation is really only part correct on what conditioning is. I shall explain, having the equivalent of two degrees in psychology (one being a master's).
    The Russian chap, Ivan Pavlov, was not a psychologist: he was a physiologist studying salivation in dogs. He needed to know what the contents of saliva were that started the digestive process off in the mouth. Of course, feeding the dogs made them salivate. But this left food particles in the samples, thus forming a contaminant. Where the gentleman was right was that Pavlov forgot to feed the dogs at the usual time and it was the sound of _foot-steps_, not a bell, that stimulated salivation in the dogs. Food was described as the unconditioned stimulus, to what salivation was an unconditioned response. The foot-steps, having been presented so often with the delivery of food, became the conditioned stimulus to which the salivation was a conditioned response. The collector-implantation surgery on the dogs was, thankfully, only in the cheek and, in order to elicit the salivation, Pavlov used a metronome to simulate the foot-steps. This is what is known as classical conditioning but - in behaviour analysis - we call it respondent learning.
    The gentleman got wrong the name of the process: operant learning starts with respondent learning but goes deeper into the process, so respondent learning seems to be a trivial case in operant conditoning. Operant learning involves the teaching of a skill, basically. Any action that is even the smallest step toward the skill being taught is reinforced by the presentation of something the organism finds pleasant. Every time this action is made, the reinforcer comes. This is then reduced in some ratio so that, as action gets closer to and given element of the skill being taught, it is reinforced on a continuous basis, then moved back to a different reinforcement schedule. Thus, as the action gets closer to that element of the taught skill, the motivation is maintained by virtue of its being the most reinforced response by the time the skill is identified and marked off as learnt. The 'operant' in operant learning refers to the way in which this set off: in respondent learning, a natural response is brought under situational control whereas, in operant learning, the action that gets reinforced (in this case) is the operant, and we use shaped versions of that operant to form the development steps of the skill being acquired. This work was set in full motion by B. F. Skinner, having read works by Hull and Thorndyke and, I believe, Tolman (but I may be wrong there).
    I hope this helps.

    Listened to sangita a few times and found her to be very fair also. Unfortunately after her disappearance i have stopped watching LBC and only came back here to comment. I feel she has been silenced for doing her job.
    I'd rather to go a place where there are all sorts of views/opinions, even those that are contrary to my views, that's what stop you from being a robot.

    I think you are wrong at this, James. The kind of people he is appealing for are not the kind of people you want to be associated with in real life, let alone them being a part of your voting base. You say judge him when he is in power, and I ask you this, what would change then. He would still be worried about losing his newly acquired voting base at every decision he makes...

    • @DrippyWaffler
      @DrippyWaffler 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Nah, the caller's analogy was much better.
      Keir is gonna win, we know this at this stage. It's like being up 5-0 in the semis. And inexplicably he's done something to maaaybe win short term (bring the finals squad on) when he's already winning at the expense of a potential injury. He doesn't need to do this to win. However it could make him lose.

    The Pavlov guy messed up. Ivan's doggy saliva discovery was classical conditioning, the association of a thing with a neutral stimulus to make a condition it into a conditioned stimulus, the caller said it was operant conditioning.
    Operant conditioning was BF Skinner, much later, where a behavior is reinforced by various different schedules of reward or absence of reward or negative reinforcement to increase the behavior or make it extinct.
    I missed the start of the call (blame it on my neurodivergence) then heard the psychology stuff and tuned back in, must have been distracted, but you have your 3 approaches in Pavlov and Watson's *stimulus focused* classical conditioning, Skinner's *response focused* operant conditioning and Jung and Freud's *space between stimulus and response*, saying of one thing while thinking about your mother is psychodynamic...ANOTHER! Thinking about your p*n*s! Nooooo! I need a lie down on a chaise lounge. lolz

    Some people listen enough to a channel and become sheep, regardless of whether it is left wing or right wing.
    I've been listening and watching O'Brien for a while now and it's clear he can get pretty dense and obnoxious when people disagree with the message he is trying to force. The callers are obviously communicating "what's not to like", but O'Brien keeps interrupting and "going in circles" himself. The callers "do not like" someone who defected when it became clear the Tories are losing hugely. They are concerned about Labor or IND who will see this as an act of weakness or integrity. You may gain some Tory supporters, but what if you lose some Labor supporters?
    What is so hard to understand, James? BTW, where is Sangita!
