You visibly have an above-average ability for languages. Some factors that helped you and that may help other learners are motivation, exposure to comprehensible input in practical situations. Curiously, Spanish has a lot of verb conjugations but Portuguese has even a bit more, so your love for Portuguese probably has to do with the speakers of this language you get a chance to interact with. Hearing your train of thought and how you learned these languages helps us get a glimpse of how your mind works, and thus makes it somehow easier for us, too, to learn foreign languages. Es interesante saber que en todos los idiomas el punto de inflexión para dejar de estar atascado y de no poder avanzar mas o simplemente tener ese boost para llegar al siguiente nivel de un idioma, siempre fue el conocer un hablante nativo, creo que no hay nada mejor que eso, por que tienes con quien practicar, con quien equivocarte y tienes un feedback correcto, 3 cosas importantísimas a la hora de aprender un idioma, yo actualmente estoy aprendiendo ingles por mi cuenta, y creo que he logrado llegar a un nivel intermedio, amplié muchísimo mi vocabulario, se los auxiliares, conectores, tiempos verbales, pronombres, como hablar en pasado, presente, futuro, lo basico e intermedio, todo eso lo se, pero me siento atascado por que a pesar de que se todo eso, me cuesta mucho el poder expresarme y juntar todo eso para hacer oraciones y comunicarme, me falta rapidez o fluidez a la hora de utilizar todo eso que aprendi y creo que la única manera de pasar ese punto en el que estoy atascado es el practicar, hablar mucho y recibir feedback de cuando me equivoque, o sea, todo lo que te puede dar un hablante nativo.

My mother language is spanish so I didn’t know how difficult verb conjugations are until I saw people trying to learn it 😅 I guess that motivates me when I’m learning other languages because they might not be as complicated, especially romance languages. I think he is amazingly correct that motivation helps a lot, but he may be missing some key points due to his age that may get in the way harder than most people expect. So I would like to expose my experiences as a full-time worker and also as an ADHD neurodivergent (late diagnostic) who learned of the inner passion for languages rather late, if you don't mind. Even though I have an enormous motivation to learn languages, common and uncommon ones, I have a hard time learning them because a full-time job consumes a huge amount of energy (even more with ADHD without medications), and after that and before having true free time, having to take care of the daily house chores simply kills my available dedication time and energy. ADHD is a neurodevelopment divergence (not a disease, as common people think it is), that makes the individual brain unable to regulate the focus in a neurotypical environment, i.e. the world we live in currently (and recent studies show that all neurodiverse people work like neurotypical individuals in an environment adapted to how their brain diverges from the neurotypical mind). For ADHD individuals, that makes us either unable to focus on one thing for long periods (varying on how intense it is at that moment, we call it hyperfocus) or focus for too long on a specific subject (what we call hyperfocus), those can happen in different points of time, it is not static for each individual. So, in short, unable to absorb most information or absorb N times more information than normal, no middle ground and we have very little to no control over what we will hypo/hyper focus and how long it will remain. This can show up in many ways, such as being unable to focus on one language, being unable to focus on one lesson, studying for 10 hours straight, etc. As I mentioned, it can be controlled in the right environment. Still, you can imagine that building a custom environment for your particular neurodivergence gets costly very fast and also some other inputs cannot be controlled. I cannot control planes that pass above my house, or cars passing in front of my house, or neighbors making noises... at least not without ending up in jail, an even more chaotic environment for my brain LOL Other things can be done to help regulate focus, but they can't make it behave just like neurotypical focus without the environment working together. So, most of the time, in this world, at this time, neurodivergents are at a disadvantage when compared to neurotypicals. Setting a realistic goal becomes very hard as well in my particular case. I have a late diagnosis and lived 26 years of my life setting goals that are realistic for most neurotypicals but very unrealistic for me (and most ADHD people), that was how I was taught on that matter. I managed to achieve such goals at the cost of my mental health (on other parts of my life) and I just started the process to learn what is a realistic goal for me. I'm sure that there are people like me that already passed this phase and are way better at managing and circumventing their neurodivergence and now can live and learn better and faster and more comfortably. I hope to get there eventually! Even with difficulties, I won't stop to keep on learning! Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope you have a great life, find your dream job, and be able to learn as many languages as you want and produce more content for us. Continue on your path!
You're a good kid. I applaud your perseverance and modesty. However, if experience had taught me anything, it's that one should focus on two or three languages max until you reach C2 level ... which could take a lifetime.

I am French and only spoke French to the age of 10, I moved to the uk in a French school but my level didn’t improve very fast. The real improvement happened when I arrived in Hong Kong for my mom’s job, I did a year in the French school there and moved to a Canadian International school (only anglophone) since then, I am fluent in English but still have an accent. In the mean time, the French educational system teaches you 3 languages + Latin as an option, so I learned some Spanish. Now I can speak conversational Spanish but wouldn’t say I’m fluent. Since the beginning of 2023, I started learning Russian and some Norwegian. I’m on my way to speaking good Russian despite the fact that it will take a while 😂 nice video, hope you keep making this kind of content to motivate people like me.
If I watched a video made by Pele telling me how he became the greatest player in the world, then it would be interesting, but I would never think that by following his journey that I could become a great player. So it is with polyglots. I'll never be one. If I manage to become fluent in my second language, then I'll die happy.

If you want to pronounce R, you do it with a tip of the tongue, you put it on the upper part of the mouth and you blow the air quite strongly so that the wind would blow the tongue down. The pressure released would make the tongue push back up and then the increased wind pressure would push it And then it repeats and makes the R sound.

I am a native (American) English speaker, and have learned Spanish to a B2 level. My goals: Currently learning Swedish, but still at an early beginner level. Once Swedish gets to an A2/B1 level I want to dive back into Russian and expand upon my very basic knowledge of the language. I also want to devote more time to Portuguese because my knowledge of Spanish has made it extremely easy to learn. The biggest challenge is the pronunciation for me. Of course, I want to get my Spanish up to a C1/nearly native level as well. After that I have my eyes set on Arabic, German, and probably Italian or French, but I will not have to make up my mind on that for a year or two likely.

congrats, bro. you're right, settling the realistic goals is the crucial point. and furthermore, not the number of the languages acquired makes you a polyglot. i mean the mere quantities must not be the main matter in motivation. it is worth rather to focus on mastering the languages already in possession, i belive. well, you think another way, maybe.
I agree with you totally! That's kinda my biggest regret I guess... focusing so much on loads of languages at the same time which, yes, did bring me to conversational level but I really wish I spoke better. Like better Russian, for example, which is what I'm working on recently. Language learning isn't a race and focusing on mastering already learned languages is so much more beneficial!

personally i think it's better to perfect one language and after use it for learning the other ( obviously i speak about language on the same family )For exemple if you speak english, you have to speak french with an C1-C2 and now the sophisticated word too because there is a lot of word that it consider rich in one language but commonly use in the other. Learn all romance language in a intermediate level is a bad idea and you will mix all the language because there are very very similar, espacially with the word use. ( Sorry for my bad english, i'm still learning )
My native language is kurdish (sorani) and i can speak english but not comepletly still i'm struggling with my english .such a Disappointment that i think i cannot learn any more language . I am struggling to learn German and French. I can speak English and spanish fluently but my mothertongue is portuguese. Congrats on being so interested in learning new langs. I use Duolingo too.
May I suggest learning Greek? I think it would make a good addition to the languages you speak. It's still indoeuropean like the rest of the languages you speak so far, but it's a branch on its own. It is a beautiful language with a rich vocabulary and a lot of expressive freedom. I believe that if you start learning Greek many words in English that originate from Greek will start making more sense. Plus the Greek alphabet is a bit prettier than the Latin one.

Hi, Liam. I'm really impressed - at your age I had a pretty poor grip on Latin and French, and that was it. Over the years I have added Spanish, a bit of German, Tok Pisin and I'm currently working on Italian. Two questions: 1.) Do you find that after you learn a second or third language, it gets a bit easier for the next one? Of course, each language has its intrinsic challenges, but it seems to me that a monoglot's brain resists the very idea that other languages could exist. 🤣 Once you get over that, the brain gets used to the idea that yeah, a new language, I can cope with that ... 💡 2.) Have you ever thought of learning a classical language like Latin or Classical (or koiné) Greek? It might not seem practical, but in fact I have found Latin incredibly rewarding. Apart from enriching my English, it opens a door on several other worlds - the world of ancient Rome, yes, but also late antiquity, the medieval era and Renaissance Europe. Knowing French, Italian and especially Spanish gives you a head start, too!
Hi, thanks a lot for your comment! Tok Pisin seems really cool, I've never actually seen it written or heard it spoken but I imagine it being quite unique and complicated. How did you actually find resources to learn it? In response to your questions, yes I have found that generally learning the second/third language becomes easier than the first, because you discover techniques the more you learn which you can then apply to future languages. But it does really depend on the language, and I think also how many you speak! Russian was my seventh language but still the hardest one for me, and now that I'm wanting to learn Turkish and Polish, it's getting hard to find time to learn them when at the same time concentrating on improving in so many others ahahaha I think if I were to learn Latin, it would be a very long time in the future. However, I often consider learning a “lesser-spoken” language! Like you with Tok Pisin, I've considered learning a language such as maybe Seychellois Creole or even an indigenous one like Abenaki (from Canada). The only problem would be, of course, finding resources and people to practise with! Maybe one day!
@@liam.languages I lived in Papua New Guinea for 8 years, so I picked up Tok Pisin while I was there. There are only a couple of books that teach it, so I learnt a lot just speaking to people. It is mainly English words adapted to Melanesian syntax, with a phonetic spelling that reflects certain shifts that occur because the local languages don't have certain sounds. So "f" becomes "p", for example. It has a very small vocabulary, so you often have either a lengthy description or else you borrow an English word. I couldn't find matches in the supermarket one day, so I asked the guy stacking shelves - but he spoke no English. After I made some suitable hand gestures he exclaimed, "Ah, liklik samting long statim pia!" But a lot of locals would know and use "match" because it's so much shorter. The vocab is easy, the grammar not too bad, but the pronunciation can be difficult to get right and to understand.
@@liam.languages One interesting aspect of Tok Pisin but also all the Melanesian languages (I think - there are > 800 of them!) is a distinction between inclusive and exclusive "we". So "mipela" (plural of "mi") means we / us _excluding_ the people I am addressing, whereas "yumi" _includes_ my group _and_ the people I am talking to. Imagine you are negotiating a peace treaty after a tribal battle. (They are frequent.) It makes a big difference when you say "We have decided ...", whether you mean "my side has decided" or "we have both agreed ..."
I’ve never been able to trill r’s at all! Though one tip that one of my school choir teachers gave us is to just make it sound like a soft d. That’s always worked for me.

You visibly have an above-average ability for languages. Some factors that helped you and that may help other learners are motivation, exposure to comprehensible input in practical situations. Curiously, Spanish has a lot of verb conjugations but Portuguese has even a bit more, so your love for Portuguese probably has to do with the speakers of this language you get a chance to interact with.
Hearing your train of thought and how you learned these languages helps us get a glimpse of how your mind works, and thus makes it somehow easier for us, too, to learn foreign languages.

Es interesante saber que en todos los idiomas el punto de inflexión para dejar de estar atascado y de no poder avanzar mas o simplemente tener ese boost para llegar al siguiente nivel de un idioma, siempre fue el conocer un hablante nativo, creo que no hay nada mejor que eso, por que tienes con quien practicar, con quien equivocarte y tienes un feedback correcto, 3 cosas importantísimas a la hora de aprender un idioma, yo actualmente estoy aprendiendo ingles por mi cuenta, y creo que he logrado llegar a un nivel intermedio, amplié muchísimo mi vocabulario, se los auxiliares, conectores, tiempos verbales, pronombres, como hablar en pasado, presente, futuro, lo basico e intermedio, todo eso lo se, pero me siento atascado por que a pesar de que se todo eso, me cuesta mucho el poder expresarme y juntar todo eso para hacer oraciones y comunicarme, me falta rapidez o fluidez a la hora de utilizar todo eso que aprendi y creo que la única manera de pasar ese punto en el que estoy atascado es el practicar, hablar mucho y recibir feedback de cuando me equivoque, o sea, todo lo que te puede dar un hablante nativo.

My mother language is spanish so I didn’t know how difficult verb conjugations are until I saw people trying to learn it 😅 I guess that motivates me when I’m learning other languages because they might not be as complicated, especially romance languages. Talking to native speakers was scaryyy at the start. With time, you get used to it. I think it's important to push yourself to get over that fear of speaking and just do it! Without worrying about mistakes. It becomes second nature very quickly. And it's extremely useful and motivational!

I think he is amazingly correct that motivation helps a lot, but he may be missing some key points due to his age that may get in the way harder than most people expect. So I would like to expose my experiences as a full-time worker and also as an ADHD neurodivergent (late diagnostic) who learned of the inner passion for languages rather late, if you don't mind.
Even though I have an enormous motivation to learn languages, common and uncommon ones, I have a hard time learning them because a full-time job consumes a huge amount of energy (even more with ADHD without medications), and after that and before having true free time, having to take care of the daily house chores simply kills my available dedication time and energy.
ADHD is a neurodevelopment divergence (not a disease, as common people think it is), that makes the individual brain unable to regulate the focus in a neurotypical environment, i.e. the world we live in currently (and recent studies show that all neurodiverse people work like neurotypical individuals in an environment adapted to how their brain diverges from the neurotypical mind). For ADHD individuals, that makes us either unable to focus on one thing for long periods (varying on how intense it is at that moment, we call it hyperfocus) or focus for too long on a specific subject (what we call hyperfocus), those can happen in different points of time, it is not static for each individual. So, in short, unable to absorb most information or absorb N times more information than normal, no middle ground and we have very little to no control over what we will hypo/hyper focus and how long it will remain.
This can show up in many ways, such as being unable to focus on one language, being unable to focus on one lesson, studying for 10 hours straight, etc.
As I mentioned, it can be controlled in the right environment. Still, you can imagine that building a custom environment for your particular neurodivergence gets costly very fast and also some other inputs cannot be controlled. I cannot control planes that pass above my house, or cars passing in front of my house, or neighbors making noises... at least not without ending up in jail, an even more chaotic environment for my brain LOL
Other things can be done to help regulate focus, but they can't make it behave just like neurotypical focus without the environment working together. So, most of the time, in this world, at this time, neurodivergents are at a disadvantage when compared to neurotypicals.
Setting a realistic goal becomes very hard as well in my particular case. I have a late diagnosis and lived 26 years of my life setting goals that are realistic for most neurotypicals but very unrealistic for me (and most ADHD people), that was how I was taught on that matter. I managed to achieve such goals at the cost of my mental health (on other parts of my life) and I just started the process to learn what is a realistic goal for me.
I'm sure that there are people like me that already passed this phase and are way better at managing and circumventing their neurodivergence and now can live and learn better and faster and more comfortably. I hope to get there eventually!
Even with difficulties, I won't stop to keep on learning!
Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope you have a great life, find your dream job, and be able to learn as many languages as you want and produce more content for us. Continue on your path!

You're a good kid. I applaud your perseverance and modesty. However, if experience had taught me anything, it's that one should focus on two or three languages max until you reach C2 level ... which could take a lifetime.

I am French and only spoke French to the age of 10, I moved to the uk in a French school but my level didn’t improve very fast. The real improvement happened when I arrived in Hong Kong for my mom’s job, I did a year in the French school there and moved to a Canadian International school (only anglophone) since then, I am fluent in English but still have an accent. In the mean time, the French educational system teaches you 3 languages + Latin as an option, so I learned some Spanish. Now I can speak conversational Spanish but wouldn’t say I’m fluent. Since the beginning of 2023, I started learning Russian and some Norwegian. I’m on my way to speaking good Russian despite the fact that it will take a while 😂 nice video, hope you keep making this kind of content to motivate people like me.
If I watched a video made by Pele telling me how he became the greatest player in the world, then it would be interesting, but I would never think that by following his journey that I could become a great player. So it is with polyglots. I'll never be one. If I manage to become fluent in my second language, then I'll die happy.

If you want to pronounce R, you do it with a tip of the tongue, you put it on the upper part of the mouth and you blow the air quite strongly so that the wind would blow the tongue down. The pressure released would make the tongue push back up and then the increased wind pressure would push it And then it repeats and makes the R sound.

I am a native (American) English speaker, and have learned Spanish to a B2 level.
My goals:
Currently learning Swedish, but still at an early beginner level.
Once Swedish gets to an A2/B1 level I want to dive back into Russian and expand upon my very basic knowledge of the language.
I also want to devote more time to Portuguese because my knowledge of Spanish has made it extremely easy to learn. The biggest challenge is the pronunciation for me.
Of course, I want to get my Spanish up to a C1/nearly native level as well.
After that I have my eyes set on Arabic, German, and probably Italian or French, but I will not have to make up my mind on that for a year or two likely.

congrats, bro. you're right, settling the realistic goals is the crucial point. and furthermore, not the number of the languages acquired makes you a polyglot. i mean the mere quantities must not be the main matter in motivation. it is worth rather to focus on mastering the languages already in possession, i belive. well, you think another way, maybe.
I agree with you totally! That's kinda my biggest regret I guess... focusing so much on loads of languages at the same time which, yes, did bring me to conversational level but I really wish I spoke better. Like better Russian, for example, which is what I'm working on recently. Language learning isn't a race and focusing on mastering already learned languages is so much more beneficial!

personally i think it's better to perfect one language and after use it for learning the other ( obviously i speak about language on the same family )For exemple if you speak english, you have to speak french with an C1-C2 and now the sophisticated word too because there is a lot of word that it consider rich in one language but commonly use in the other. Learn all romance language in a intermediate level is a bad idea and you will mix all the language because there are very very similar, espacially with the word use. ( Sorry for my bad english, i'm still learning )
I think B2 level it's enough.. I don't know how people do it to not mix between roman
My native language is kurdish (sorani) and i can speak english but not comepletly still i'm struggling with my english .such a Disappointment that i think i cannot learn any more language . I am struggling to learn German and French. I can speak English and spanish fluently but my mothertongue is portuguese. Congrats on being so interested in learning new langs. I use Duolingo too.

May I suggest learning Greek? I think it would make a good addition to the languages you speak. It's still indoeuropean like the rest of the languages you speak so far, but it's a branch on its own. It is a beautiful language with a rich vocabulary and a lot of expressive freedom. I believe that if you start learning Greek many words in English that originate from Greek will start making more sense. Plus the Greek alphabet is a bit prettier than the Latin one.

Hi, Liam. I'm really impressed - at your age I had a pretty poor grip on Latin and French, and that was it. Over the years I have added Spanish, a bit of German, Tok Pisin and I'm currently working on Italian.
Two questions:
1.) Do you find that after you learn a second or third language, it gets a bit easier for the next one? Of course, each language has its intrinsic challenges, but it seems to me that a monoglot's brain resists the very idea that other languages could exist. 🤣 Once you get over that, the brain gets used to the idea that yeah, a new language, I can cope with that ... 💡
2.) Have you ever thought of learning a classical language like Latin or Classical (or koiné) Greek? It might not seem practical, but in fact I have found Latin incredibly rewarding. Apart from enriching my English, it opens a door on several other worlds - the world of ancient Rome, yes, but also late antiquity, the medieval era and Renaissance Europe. Knowing French, Italian and especially Spanish gives you a head start, too!

In response to your questions, yes I have found that generally learning the second/third language becomes easier than the first, because you discover techniques the more you learn which you can then apply to future languages. But it does really depend on the language, and I think also how many you speak! Russian was my seventh language but still the hardest one for me, and now that I'm wanting to learn Turkish and Polish, it's getting hard to find time to learn them when at the same time concentrating on improving in so many others ahahaha
I think if I were to learn Latin, it would be a very long time in the future. However, I often consider learning a “lesser-spoken” language! Like you with Tok Pisin, I've considered learning a language such as maybe Seychellois Creole or even an indigenous one like Abenaki (from Canada). The only problem would be, of course, finding resources and people to practise with! Maybe one day!
@@liam.languages I lived in Papua New Guinea for 8 years, so I picked up Tok Pisin while I was there. There are only a couple of books that teach it, so I learnt a lot just speaking to people.
It is mainly English words adapted to Melanesian syntax, with a phonetic spelling that reflects certain shifts that occur because the local languages don't have certain sounds. So "f" becomes "p", for example. It has a very small vocabulary, so you often have either a lengthy description or else you borrow an English word. I couldn't find matches in the supermarket one day, so I asked the guy stacking shelves - but he spoke no English. After I made some suitable hand gestures he exclaimed, "Ah, liklik samting long statim pia!" But a lot of locals would know and use "match" because it's so much shorter.
The vocab is easy, the grammar not too bad, but the pronunciation can be difficult to get right and to understand.
@@liam.languages One interesting aspect of Tok Pisin but also all the Melanesian languages (I think - there are > 800 of them!) is a distinction between inclusive and exclusive "we". So "mipela" (plural of "mi") means we / us _excluding_ the people I am addressing, whereas "yumi" _includes_ my group _and_ the people I am talking to. Imagine you are negotiating a peace treaty after a tribal battle. (They are frequent.) It makes a big difference when you say "We have decided ...", whether you mean "my side has decided" or "we have both agreed ..."
I’ve never been able to trill r’s at all! Though one tip that one of my school choir teachers gave us is to just make it sound like a soft d. That’s always worked for me.
