Hey girls. U shold see if grandpa gan build a few boxes that sit side by side next to the mill to catch all the sawdust. And make them on pallets so u can grab them with the loader. To make cleanup easier
Emerald, it's hard to gauge what these smaller logs turn out like, for their use as beams, until you get the opportunity to study that same piece of timber you milled a few months after you milled it up. This sort of lumber 'wet'and fresh sawn, versus dried and aged for a number of months (even just air dried, not even kiln dried), it's like chalk and cheese. Put some of those 'four by four' pieces of lumber aside and just watch what happens to them over several month's worth of time. If you've never done that, and seen what drying out timber does, it's worth doing so. I think it would change how you think about the lumber that comes straight off the mill. And I do recommend putting a carpenter's saw into that air dried lumber that is left to dry for a while. I've got some Yew tree timber (long bow tree species, grows in British Isles), I harvested a while back, and it's more 3 by 3 at best. Which I then sawed down into one inch thickness strips. And dried out, I suddenly realized I had got ideal natural slate lath, or batten material. And this is definitely some 'lumber' that no one would have bothered to process.

I have not seen it for sale for a long time. I am curious about that as well. Emerald is doing perfect product placement by having the mug in the videos but I don't see it for sale......
*_VERY_* cool blended split screen . . . pretty fancy dancy . . . this wasn't a special effect used just for the sake of using it . . . quite the contrary - *_SOMEBODY_* has a well-developed eye for screen composition . . . props to the video editor
Get Grandpa to weld a small extension on that log deck outfeed gate. Put it about 5 degrees below zero so when you get a log stuck like that, raising your gate will roll it onto the mill deck. As your siblings get older, you can bring more "junk" wood back to the yard specifically for firewood. You should offer automatic-billed subscription to your merch site. My coffee lady gets $20.00 every month.. AUTOMATICALLY.
Are those small logs really worth milling? That last log had 9 or 10 cuts to make a 4x4, in addition to all the handling to get it from the woods to the saw.
I subscribe and check in on you guys once in a while and a couple things I noticed. First you both have very good stage presence, which means you’re not afraid of the camera and we don’t see any breaks for a retake, which also helps with the editing! Another thing, the Boss has really become a super star in front of the camera compared to the early days when as a dad myself I could see it in his face saying, I don’t know if this was a good idea turned into his own full length segments, what a ham he turned out to be! .Your grandpa is really a Jack of all trades who can fix equipment, build a building all while serving a great family BarBQ. And tell your brother and mother, we see you back there, but you can’t hide forever. Even though from a distance we have mistaken mom for one of her daughters. Good job all of you, you’re not only interesting but fun to watch!
What a great family team operation. What are these hemlock beams used for? You might explain how you deal with a log that has a curve in it like the one you loaded about mid-way in the video.
Hey girls and family I love your show!! I was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania but my grandparents were from Sweden and Germany. I’ve been in Millwright in Oregon for over 30 years and you girls and your family make me miss Pennsylvania. All of your family members are extremely beautiful in multiple ways, and hard-core and strength and durability. I love families that are strong and dynamic in word ways than one. Please get more of Jade on your videos. She has a dream girl to an old Mill right because of her strength , her easy-going kindness and her beauty like I said I’m a Viking and heritage, as well as German some of my uncles and grandfathers in Millwright in Oregon. We love you dearly. Sincerely, Chuck Richards.
Breon family; I would love to see a video dictionary of logging/sawyer lingo and phrases. I've picked up on several from your videos, but it would be nice to have a video to reference these terms. I think it would be very useful and entertaining. You may have already done this as I have not seen all of your videos but I'm trying to catch up, thanks
The biggest problem with family businesses as I see it is paying for the family labor. Your product is inexpensive and doable if you keep your labor costs low. The problem is the family members walk away when they don't get paid enough. What happens then is that the family business goes broke and that's what happened to our family business.
That is also how you get so much Hemlock scrap!! Good thing to do however. On your mill you can squeeze out another dollar and also use more of the tree which is a good idea from my point of view.
Y'all found pro editing software and a software pro to edit the videos , you can add drone footage also into your editing , into the screen that makes your log loader your 3rd arm .😀😀😀😀😯😉😈😈😈😉😀😎💑😸💀💀💀💀💀💖💖

I watched one yesterday from two years ago and you've come a long way baby, you are a regular 'Chatty Cathy' now. There was absolutely nary a word spoken in that video. Keep up the fantastic work and cranking out great content.

Nice discussion. Unfortunately beams where one side is from a small log's axis (heavy on heartwood), so the other is ring wood, are pretty likely to dry in a banana shape. Hope your customer is set to use these immediately.
@scottsoper Thanks. Emerald said she'd barely get two 4x8s from the one log. That's what prompted my comment. Can't do that without having one side on the medial axis

Good idea with the crossfading of two videos. You could always do that - Emerald on one side and Jade on the other. That way all fans have equal rights to see their crush. 🙃

I think that enough lumber millers have been taken out of the market that it will take high prices to get new millers to come into the market. In the meantime LCLY should enjoy higher lumber prices and increased demand. I expect that at some point in the next two years, housing starts will go up making lumber prices go much higher yet.
I enjoy the small log cuts because that is real life part of business
That's really neat trick operate the sawmill behind your back you are good
Your videos bring calm to the chaos.
Thanks for setting a great example of hard work pays, and paying attention is knowledge 👍
"Focus" is a GREAT way to work and live.
Hemlock boards have multiple uses. TY ladies😂❤😂
If jade wasn't there the mill would have to shut down. She does all the manual labor. Great work Jade .
Great video, the split screen really makes it more interesting, and I enjoyed the instrumental music. You girls are doing a great job.
I worked in a sawmill emerald doing exactly what you're doing so I know what you mean by getting the most out of a log and less waste ....😊
Really nice work on the split screen blend. Looks Great!
Oh there you beat me to it I like the split screen effect also 2:08
Props to the editor Jade for the blend picture editing. 👍👍
Emerald does the editing.
Great job once again! Making use of every piece of the tree..love you guys❤
It looks cold there. Jade be careful of exposure. Excellent job ladies thank you for sharing.👍❤️❤️
Like the “ trick” screen work…
Waste not, want not is always right. With the LK70, it looks like it is easier to mill the small diameter logs.
I like the spilt screen

GREAT JOB LADYS😊😊😊
With most species of wood, if you cut a beam with a heart center, the beam will develop a crack as the outer wood dries faster than the heart wood.
Can you take care of that by putting it in a kiln quickly?
@@DanPurdy1 The outer wood still dries faster which means it shrinks faster resulting in a crack. The outer wood is less dense than the heart wood.
Nice editing with the overlays. That worked out good
Your split screen is neat.
I liked that also!
Hey Emerald I like the spilt screen presentation. Very informative as always. Stay warm Jade !😊
Yes dear Good Livelyhood and Love doing it❤. That's what MATTERS

where can I buy the mug please?

Good for making posts as well.

you just cant help but notice emerald sat in the hut sipping coffee while jade is out in the elements lugging timber.

Excellent Video perspective
I liked the video perspective and the fact that we could hear Emerald over the noise of the LT-70 : I thought it would be louder in there.
Waste not want not 👍
Actually, Jade could train the dog to help drag away the slabs…
Our mills won't take nothing under 11 inches so they go for chip wood.
a beam would pay better than chip wood. Maybe get a small LT-15 and use some of those smaller ones to make some beams.

It would be more interesting to know what type of tree that you are milling. When you show a log why not indicate the vsriety it is.
