Yep, The Soprano's was a real tour de force. I just discovered it about 3 years ago (I don't think that I had a TV for most of it's original run) and ended up binge watching the entire series - and I'm not really a film or television hound. Ultra high level writing and great acting with many out of the ordinary sharp psychological scenes; just one example were some of the soap opera scenes between Tony and wife Carmella that were straight up intense Academy Award performances. The episode about getting lost in the snowy woods had me grinning and laughing nearly the whole way, and not much anymore can do that. All of The Soprano's supporting cast were superb but definitely, Mr. Gandolfini carried the legendary series on his shoulders and he is gone way too soon.

Kind of like karate movies that were popular back in the 80s that all the kids in class were doing karate chops on each other and throwing high kicks! The large sunglasses thing that people emulate is so obvious!

I grew up with my Sicilian grandparents, and when The Godfather and Godfather II came out on video, we were not allowed to enter the living room while they were watching them, and it always struck me as odd because we could watch First Blood or any other movies with no issues, but they wouldn't let us watch that at all... so, when I got to Jr. High, I stole a hardback copy from the public library (and paid for it later in cash) and read the book. So, when I finally watched the movie, I was disappointed, actually because I felt they left out too many important parts. I still have that old, moldy copy of The Godfather at my house. The bindings are gone, and the back cover is gone, but I still have it. Haha.

You know, I’d rather have the heads of the 5 families running the country than the politicians. At least you’d know where you stand, your neighborhoods would be respectful and no one would put up with all the crap we do now.

Mario Puzo first wrote several novel’s about normal Italian Americans families. He got nowhere, gets fed up. To consciously write a best seller. He adds the Mafia. That’s supposed to be why the characters are and the family are so vivid and good.

I think “ Godfather” was a Nick name given to the character of Vito Corleone because he was wise and had sort of a “ Fatherly way” of handling his business. Actually there is a line in the movie that says “ Godfather was a term that was given to my father by his Freinds out reverence and respect”

Mr. Palminterri, your depiction of Jimmy Whispers is hilarious and the Bronx Tale is the only movie concerning the mob, that i like.
I have an idea for your next mob movie, how about Teddy Tuesday?

Compadre (in spanish) which is so close to Italians in language, faith, etc... means COMO PADRE meaning "like a father". That's where the word compadre (compare) come from. If the hats of the "family" is "like a father" is where it is switched and used a head of a mafia family comes into play.

James Gandolfini was a great actor and such a nice guy. I’m from Naples gentlemen. I didn’t see the Godfather til I got older and honestly, I laughed at it. My mafia movies was the news. It’s not the life that is depicted by Hollywood at all. As far as the Godfather term is concerned, I think Mario Puzo came up with the term when he wrote Il Padrino. He wrote the book based on stories his mother told him when he was younger. I have never heard anyone call a boss a don or godfather, even in Italy.

    Don:masculine noun
Predicate of honor attributed to many of the regular clerics and to all secular ecclesiastics; among the lay people, once reserved only for princes and members of the high nobility of Spain and Portugal, it was then extended, also in Italy, to every person of importance, not necessarily noble, especially. in the South where, today, more than anything else, it is a name denoting respect and reverence

Chaz asked the question. When did “Godfather” come into the mafia and it seems that it never really did but that was just Hollywood’s depiction. I think Michael even said that he doesn’t remember anybody being called Godfather rather boss.
I could be wrong though, and certainly stand to be corrected if a member of the life says otherwise. .

I was afraid of the mafia when I was young after Paul was killed, the papers showed him in the street like a dog. I hated that Italians with money were assumed to be mafia, totally Hollywoods fault. My dad owned restaurants, had one by the castellanos big Louie in FL and was approached to launder money. My grandpa sent them packing. He grew up in the Bowery, was a Bowery Boy, my dad sheepshead bay, and me, Long Island north shore.I was teased my whole life bcz my last name. The Fortunate Pilgrim by Mario Puzzo was good. Godfather was used to add humanity to the character to show he watched over the neighborhood. Soprano had one foot in old school, one foot in a new changing world hence the inner conflict, which I relate very much. The old timers had other families all together. Look at Gigante.

My favorite mob film is Asante's Gotti. But there's a huge error. Gotti goes to visit Quack Quack at the cancer hospital. I think that's Hollywood since there was no way Gotti would visit him, and I think John avoided the funeral too.
