  • My guest this week is ex-b*mb disposal man, Steve Smith. Steve worked as a EOD officer in Belfast during the early 80s and worked to rid the city of IRA & Loyalist b*mbs.
Steve gives us his insight into the various types of explosives used throughout the conflict, the differences between IRA & Loyalist b*mb-makers, how it feels to put on the b*mb-suit & approach an explosive device and the effects that such a job can have on one’s mental health.
Steve tells us about the unique challenges of b*mb-disposal in rural settings vs urban, the physical sensation of being caught in a b*mb blast and much more.
If you would like to help out the show please like, subscribe and share. I plan on doing bigger things with this show including walk through of areas, documentary-type videos and more.. if you would like to help fund these efforts please consider donating on Buy Me a Coffee.

Respect to these men. Brave souls. RIP to those who paid the ultimate price. I read great book about this some years ago. The early years of the troubles were a steep learning curve for EOD.

I had two who worked in that field when growing up. They had Royal Ordinance Bomb Disposal plastered on their blue-lighted vehicles. I would also see them infrequently racing with their blue lights flashing. I lived near Army HQ Scotland and on the main road fro Rosyth Royal Naval base so I don't know where they were based? Also(and I commented this today on Chris Thrall's channel) I had a friend as a kid who at the last time I spoke with him he was demining in the former Yugoslavia but I assume he was just clearing known mines and not what we now call IED's. I am only 8 minutes in so I don't know if he will discuss the different layers of detonation methods or the notes that would be left in the devices for them?

I recommend you move your chair away from the wall. And maybe create a more appealing background. One of the first things you learn in video and audio production classes is to not have a back wall so close to yourself when filming otherwise It looks like an interrogation video. Great guests by the way. It's great that you talk to 'both sides'.

A mercury tilt switch is the easiest or one of the easier trigger devices that a primary school kid could make but you would need a secondary safety switch and they could be used on UCBT as they were known at the time, but not solely, anything that would be moved. With the advent of mobile phones and other frequency communication ways including light-sensitive diodes and lasers and god knows what now, but anyone ever with the intent of using a device to injure or kill a person you have more to worry about than just law enforcement agencies coming after you, you have your conscious and your soul, not just in this life. All he discusses is by the by and as much as we maybe fantasize about doing something to the most evil person on the planet, don't even consider it.
