"INBK Deel Fragment Conservation" Angaragsuren Odkhuu

  • This presentation was part of the closing ceremony of the "Conserving and preserving Mongolia's endangered textile collections and traditions" project on January 12, 2024.
    Project fellow Dr. Angaragsuren Odkhuu explains the conservation process of the deel fragments discovered in 2012 at Ikh Nartiin Balariin Khad II. The fragments were left behind by grave robbers and had stayed exposed to the elements for 2 years before it was found by archaeologists.
    This project was generously funded by the U.S. Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. Initially selected in 2019 and planned for 2 years the project was adapted to uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was finally completed at the end of 2023. Other major part of the project included training museum and conservation professionals of Mongolia to improve the capabilities of these professionals in properly treating archaeological as well as other priceless textiles. The team that discovered the conserved deel fragments were coincidentally, also funded by the Ambassador's Fund.
