I don't know why some people wanted her voice to be deeper and more intimidating; the whole point is that she's a narcissistic emotional manipulator.
Being soft-spoken and disarming like this is exactly what she should be, and makes her much more sinister.
If she _sounded_ like the kind of person that was capable of horribly betraying you, it wouldn't work. Manipulators and abusers of every sort rely on that perception.
