The only reason that I have discovered NOT to hollow prints, is that if any resin gets trapped inside the hollowed volumes (like if you forget a drain hole or don't wash thoroughly) the model will eventually burst like a resin filled pustule and dribble resin on everything else in the storage location you've chosen. Like how a large snake zombie I printed turned into this ruptured gory nightmare and gave a good portion of my display shelf a thin but large puddle of resin that I had to wash off of the adjacent models. Glad I hadn't invested time into painting that one.
Glad that you covered this issue.

I printed a large ogre from Loot Studios (one of their earlier models), I didn't realize it was hollow until after I had painted it and one day saw it cracked in half on my shelf. Looking back at the file I found it came hollow without any drain holes. Failure on my part for not noticing, but also boo on them for not adding holes.

Emang is incredible, his work is exceptionally good, I reckon the smaller models are challenging to support without scarring, rat army is for 3d experts, but I printed green guys (wink) and untidy fighters (wink wink) with zero problems going the process of Battle Brother Sam

With the prints cracking, I've experienced the same.
My advice with adding the holes to the models is to always add two!
Never just one, because it can create a vacuum/pressure build up during the print phase, but also makes cleaning out the inside harder. With two holes the IPA/water can enter one hole with air going in and out the second hole, allowing a full clean out before you plug the hole.
If it's not clean inside, it doesn't matter how well you cure it, it can crack. For whatever scientific reason.
It's just based my experience with it.
I've printed at least 1000 models by now.

    • @Habes

  • @Gvaz

I'll be honest: I started 3D printing, with an Anycubic 4k mono, and I've had nothing but troubles. I have it in the basement, because I don't have anywhere else to put it, but it's in a grow tent, which has a mini space heater, on a thermostat, that shuts it off/on as needed, along with a air purifier to suck up any stinky VoCs (if I don't run it, you can smell it on the first floor quite easily). I tried with anycubic resin and I had such a hard time. I would import lychee settings for the resin I had, because I don't know or care to know what 99% of the settings mean. I just want to "press butan receive bacon". I want it to work like a regular paper printer. However, it's more like some cthluhu god, or a 25 year old car: first you have to make sure the bed is level, then you have to make sure the resin settings are good, and then you have to spend hours dialing in the settings to print the test print correctly, (you're already losing me at this point) then you have to make sure the resin is kept at a nominal temperature, then you have to make sure nothing stuck to the fep, and if something damages the fep, you can't really tell, my first fep had micropunctures somehow and it leaked into the screen, then you have to ALSO learn how to do supports, because all the cool free models are unsupported, and all the paid models are supported, and I have zero interest in paying for STL files to do all the other prerequisites. Most of them aren't cheap either, like $25 for a group of them and who knows if the person modelling it even bothered to print them, some of them have supports that are pre-supported but the supports are garbage you had to fix anyways. I was so excited to do 3D printing, my coworker got me it for xmas, and after futzing about it for a while I realized I hated it and would prefer to just pay someone else to do all that shit for me. My hobby is painting minis. I literally don't have time to pick up a second hobby unless I quit my job, and I have a decent paying middle class job. I'm also not very patient (outside of work), so waiting hours for even the supported models I got to fail because I was missing......something arcane and unknowable....doesn't strike me as a useful measure of my time. you ask someone online for help and you get 30 different answers. I wanted to like printing, because GW model pricing is absolute garbage. $35 for one model? Fuck you. $50 for necron flayers, and if you want a full compliment, that's actually $200. I can buy Stargrave minis for literally $1 a mini. They're not GW but they're reasonable enough, and way better than wizkid/bones/reaper bullshit.
