Sudan: Death Toll Tops 420 as Fear Grows Fighting Between Rival Generals Could Lead to Proxy War

  • The United States and other countries moved to evacuate diplomats and citizens from Sudan over the weekend amid fighting between rival military factions that's killed at least 420 people and injured over 3,700 more, in a crisis that began on April 15 when the Sudanese military and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces began exchanging fire in the capital Khartoum, further dashing hopes of a return of civilian rule in the country. CNN reports the powerful Russian mercenary group Wagner has backed the RSF by providing the paramilitaries with surface-to-air missiles. Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has denied the report but offered on Friday to act as a mediator between the two warring factions. Meanwhile, many residents remain trapped in Khartoum with dwindling supplies of food, water, medicine and power. For more on the crisis, we speak with Khalid Mustafa Medani, associate professor of political science and Islamic studies who chairs the African Studies Program at McGill University. He says neither side has much support from the civilian population, which has shown an overwhelming commitment to a democratic transition. "It's not so much a civil war, but essentially a fight to the death between two generals," says Medani.

“Civil war” suggests civilians are involved. Not the case here.
Two military factions fighting over power with civilians caught in the middle.

She’s great. Sometimes confrontational journalism has its advantages (see Ben Shapiro’s BBC debacle, Mehdi Hassan’s interview of Matt Taibbi), in those interviews if your interviewee is weaselling out of answering the question, sometimes it’s necessary to cut them off. But otherwise let them talk.

The beginning of this quagmire was obviously orchestrated by foreign powers. Sudan always had peace until they fell prey to hegemonic agendas. No Afriken should ever have to fight other Afrikens. The issue is not about integration of the Paramilitary forces, but a well calculated regime change agenda, for reasons better serving foreign interests. Sudan is One, lest they choose the Yugoslavia path.

@@MinRic It's definitely Russian, both of these warlords have cut deals with Russia, they trade gold for Russian weapons.

I look forward to finding out when I was cut off from facts and why. How that directly contributed to harm or was weighed against more harm. I trust it was done for a reason, but look forward to using my brain again.

Generals never are or rarely are they brought to Justice. Who shall do that; The World Court⁉️ Rival factions make peace when their losses become greater than their wins and if the only measure is how much death and destruction one can rain on the other - it ends when it ends, when all the fighters are dead or wounded and all the civilians have fled. What is the source of their conflict is what I want to know. Sudan has been in civil conflict and war for the last 75 years, first throughout the Cold War post WW II and then these “ fights to the death” between warring factions but again over what. Resources; beliefs; political views and ethnic feuds - what do they want⁉️ More. Power. Money. The usual. Unchecked violence breeds unchecked violence. Devolution. These forces will destroy their country until there is no market over which to fight, no labor except slaves to dig the gold, no men left to fight for the gold or whatever is the source of wealth. So. It is Greed, apparently. Regional and global conflicts caused by greedy men. Fighting for democracy!! Bah humbug.
