Szell and Cleveland did an outstanding recording of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition along with Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite and Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite on Sony. Glad to see that someone mentioned Szell's recording of the Sibelius Second Symphony with the Concergebouw for Philips. Nice video.
Brilliant video on Szell. Totally agree with all of your pics. And, I would add his Beethoven 3rd and his Mahler 4th with Raskin. What a decade the late 50's-60's was for American classical music. You had Reiner in Chicago, Szell in Cleveland, Ormandy in Philly, Bernstein in NY, and Munch in Boston. Reiner, Szell, and Ormandy were all Hungarian Jews born in Budapest. Man, what was in the water there? Someone should explore that non-coincidence.
A superb overview of Szell's greatest recordings and I agree with most of what you say. I'm especially pleased that you singled out the Haffner Symphony as the greatest representative of his Mozart symphony conducting. One minor correction. He actually recorded the Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto at least five times. He recorded it not once, but twice, with Rudolf Serkin and the Cleveland Orchestra, once in 1952 (mono) and again in 1968 (stereo).
Good choices for a notably dependable conductor. It's worth mentioning that Szell cut his professional teeth working under Strauss for four years at the Berlin Staatsoper, and readily credited Strauss for greatly contributing to his success. As to the Brahms PC1, I prefer the Fleischer recording.
His box set is an absolute steal at the price! Agree very much with his Mozart and Dvorak. Surprised not to see any of his Beethoven or his Sibelius No.2 in this list.
His Sibelius No.2 is one of the greatest recordings of anything! Especially the live concert in Tokyo in 1970, it is truly awesome. His Decca with the Concertgebouw is also fabulous.

Yes, on the Haffner. Never heard a better version.

I would add the Szell Mahler 4th with Cleveland and Judith Raskin as the soloist. Many regard this as a reference recording of this work.
Yes, indeed. Another wonderful recording and Raskin is especially good in this.
Hello . Is the BEST of Szell : Sibelius symphony 2 , Beethoven y Brahms piano concertos with León fleisher. Beethoven symphonies cycle is very good. 😊
Szell recorded Brahms concerto 1 twice with Serkin on Columbia 1952 and 1968 .all in all 5 recordings of Brahms op.15.
His Met ‘Tannhäuser’ was dull but better than most in terms of control, knowledge of the score, etc._ from memory ________________
Newbie here : if you could recommend just one Liszt recording what would it be? Great video by the way :)
Piano concertos and sonata with Sviatoslav Richter on Philips
@@GilZilkha Many thanks, much appreciated - gonna try and get that right now :)
@@GilZilkha Great recommendation, Gil.
