You see CGI all the time and don't even notice it. There's no CGI boogy man, and it's not worse than practical. It's a tool just like anything else, and like any tool it can be used or misused, and only the bad stuff is noticeable. There's plenty of great a CGI out there and plenty of practical work that is utter dogshit. I used to work in the VFX industry in the 80s so take it from me - CGI has done more good than bad for the industry.
No, it is a problem. It makes film-makers lazy. They don't have to think on their feet anymore. CGI also means that film-makers don't have to concentrate too much on screenwriting or characterization because they know that audiences love computer images. When used minimally, such as in the original Jurassic Park, or mixed with miniatures and sleight of hand (the Lord of the Rings trilogy), it's great. Other than that, it's an irritation.
CGI is the problem. Period. There's always a practical solution, and even the "crappy" practical effects are more entertaining than some lifeless, soulless, uncanny valley CGI bullshit.
No. Good CGI (which is rare) doesn't take away from a film in the slightest. It is rarely good. Even when they get the still shot appearance of it bang on, they usually mess up the movement and it ends up unworthy. Starship troopers had good CGI for the time it came out and the film is crammed with it
You only hate CG because when it's done right you don't even realise it was done at all. CG doesn't have to be a fully computer rendered battle scene like Star Wars.
