  • This is episode four in the 'Tainted Grail: The Fall From Avalon' board game painting series - the Menhirs. These are the large stone statues that help keep Wyrdness at bay in this story based exploration game.
    The Plastic Canvas is a miniature painting channel focused at beginner painters, or anyone that likes watching minis being painted, from start to finish. I'm using this to document my progression in the hobby and I hope that with what I share about what I'm learning, I can help you make some good early steps in your time in the hobby too.
    Happy painting everyone!

      Good luck with them Soren. My main bit of advice is to just go slow and gradually build up the textures and effects. With the presence that they have on the table you want to do them right. If you're happy to, it'd be great if you could post some photos when you're done on Twitter or Instagram and tag me in them so I can see how they end up. Have fun!

    Hello, I would like to thank you for this tutorial. It's awesome and it encouraged me to paint my own menhirs (and dials) too. Although I used several other tutorials and did some my own changes, your video was my main source of inspiration and I watched it again and again while I was painting :). I posted my finished minis on reddit: www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/comments/l3eo0t/menhirs_and_dials_from_tainted_grail_first_minis/

      Hey Tomas. Sorry I never replied to your comment, it only just popped up in my notifications now. Anyway, I'm really glad that you found the videos useful. Your pics look awesome! You did a much better job of the OSL from the candles inside the Menhirs than I did so well done!

    why did u mix the lahmian medium with the nuln oil?
    do you wait for the paint to be dry to do the dry brushing?

    • @theplasticcanvas
      @theplasticcanvas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lydia. I mixed the medium in so that the black wash didn't darken it too much. I still wanted the lighter areas to be light. It was just to help bring out the detail a bit more. It also just helps it to flow easier so it doesn't take as long to put the wash over a large area.
      And yeah, wait for the paint to dry. If it's still wet the colours will just blend together and you won't be able to just pick out the edges.

    Really enjoyed the whole video! Good explanation of light sources and how to figure out where the light goes. Have you tried fluor colors for object source lighting yet? They bring out the glowing effect even better and are more intense. Here is a video I saw about them today th-cam.com/video/BJhpq4i-l-Q/w-d-xo.html. I ordered my Tainted Grail yesterday and are very excited to start painting on the menhires. It will be my first miniature painting ever. I hope I can learn as much before to do it properly. Thank you very much.

      Hey Eodan. Thanks for the comment. Glad you found the video useful. I haven't tried the fluro colours yet but I've seen a few videos and I'm definitely interested. Budget just doesn't stretch far enough at the moment to be able to get some.
      Good luck with the menhirs. That's a big one (not just size) to start with! I'll be interested to hear and see how you go with them for your first minis. Cos on one hand you could just dry brush a stone effect and more or less leave it there to keep it simple, or you can push yourself and do a bit more. When you're done, if you're happy to, feel free to post some pics to Twitter or Instagram and tag me in them. Good luck!

      @@theplasticcanvas I have finished my first menhir today. Thank you again for your tutorial! I mixed red, yellow and orange with gloss medium to do the lighting and it worked quite well :-) drive.google.com/file/d/1sKpqJH_XNo_wBjw6BgFzfx9Dmb-eXo4B/view?usp=sharing

      @@eodan8490 Ooh nice. I like those more reddish tones that you put into part of the skeleton. Looks really good. So is that your first painted mini or did you start with something else? If that's your first than you've made an awesome start! Well done :)

      @@theplasticcanvas Thank you! It is my second mini, I hope it is still good 😄 My first mini was a fates end dice tower I spent a lot of time painting with. I wanted to let the menhir look like a skinned human that got petrified but not fully maybe in mid process, so it was still living to work as it was supposed to do. I had this initially in mind when I looked at the mini. I think it looks more horrific now and brutal, but having this art for the game cover in this way would not have been appropriate, because the company wanted to attract families and kids alike. I thought about what the creators of the game wanted to tell us if there would not have been any restrictions in game design. Also I think the mini looks more interesting than plain stone. I upload more pictures of the mini and share it with you. Thank you! 😊
