The Philosophy of Black | Definitive Color Pie Study

  • Black is one of the most divisive Members of the MTG Color Pie. I often hear people claim it is no more than a villain while others stand up and protest such assumptions. In this episode I intend to show both sides of a person consisting of Black Mana. In Magic: the Gathering we may often see Black represented as nothing but darkness but I say it is also the person who stands up for themselves and refuses to be the victim. This series aims to be the definitive mono color pie series giving you the tools to truly understand the core colors within the color pie.

I would identify my wife as having a very strong black mana presence.
She’s very focused on herself and those that she cares about, and she does not suffer those that would be a drain on her. She moved to this country on her own when she was 18 and learned that no one but her would look out for her. She’s incredibly compassionate, loving, but very closed off and ruthless at times, but tends to reserve that ruthlessness to those that are in her way or holding her back.
Gaining her love and trust, is to gain the love and trust of someone who loves you as much as she loves herself.

    • @nicolaezenoaga9756

''and ruthless at times, but tends to reserve that ruthlessness to those that are in her way or holding her back'' - Sorry but that's still being a jerk and a quite cruel. In the momentes where she dose behave like that of course.
I think if she has a problem with somebody she should just tell them to either change, live her alone for good or live them alone for good.

The video explaining the color pie as a device for character creation instead of the classic DnD alignment. The video caught my attention and summarizes the channel in a way that I've immediately subscribed. I have thought about it at the past, but you gave me back the appreciation of MTG. Keep going! The 'use color instead of alignment' video is how I found this channel, and sparked a whole new way of looking at my and my friends' characters. We just ran a little mini adventure for three sessions with the premise 'you've lost your memory, thus, you don't know what you actually are.' By the end, our characters got their memories back, and the dm let us fill in most of the blanks when it came to who we were. After that, one of the players asked what my character's personality would be like after getting said memories back. I had maybe two sentences about them, then thought about 'I first thought of this character as red/black. What does that tell me about them?' Then, before I know it, I had a much larger paragraph on them and a much firmer grasp on them as a whole. And that was just the start. So genuinely, thank you for giving me a new way to look at characters. It's been so fun and insightful.

I totally agree. In the end vagita shows the heroic and villainous side of Black. I would argue that vagita is RB in the end though as he is a victim of his own anger and pride, but those are also his strengths

That comment about black not loving unconditionally, but still able to love...really hit home for me, and really does show that every single one of us has a little bit of each color in our soul. I consider myself a white-aligned person at the core. I value and champion concepts such as morality, heroism, selflessness, order, and rules. But then that concept of those around me and who I love...wow. Like, I'm not close to my blood-relatives much, and a lot of that has to do with how uncomfortable they make ME feel. If all I feel is anxiety when around these people, then why should I expend the effort to do so. I feel like white would do so out of a sense of duty. But me? I choose to stay close to those I have met in this journey that is life; the friends I have made and those who have had a major positive impact on my life. I'm close to them because either their interests or personality align a lot with my own, and thus I covet them to an almost black-aligned degree, with a sprinkle of red tossed in.
Very well made and intelligently thought out video that really made me take a look at myself.

Your explanations for the colors have all been great, can’t wait to see what you make next! 2. Deal with reality on its own terms, but never submit to it.
    3. A game is played by its rules and mechanics, not by how other people think it should be played.
    4. The only people who want you to abandon your self-interest are those who want to exploit you.
    5. All people hold different moral beliefs and nobody has ever held moral principles that would go against their self-interest. Pretending they are somehow absolute is hypocrisy and internalized optics.

I'm sure there are a lot of people saying similar things, but this is my shout into the void.
Before I ever found these videos I resonated with black colored cards and thought of myself as being black aligned and this video just makes me feel more valid in that. I like to think about how I relate to the different colors and combinations when listening to these videos, so I'm always contemplative when I listen to these.
I've listened to more of the color combos than the singular colors somehow, but this really ignited some old fury for me. When you were talking about black looking at white as hiding behind rules it just made me think of all these times I've lost my temper because of people doing reprehensible things hoping that they could get away with it because it was 'legal' or 'normal'.

I remember when I was a kid, and I got bullied so hard I would come home scuffed with all sorts of marks and rips. The one day I defend myself, I'm given In-School Suspension.
That's when I learned that not only does no one save you but yourself, but that the principle of law and order at it's core is flawed and worthless. So yes, you are right; laws exist to protect scared and timid people who are too frightened or weak to take care of themselves and save themselves. They exist to keep corruption in power and competition to that very corruption down. Rule of law will always fail, and has always failed, yet people seem to think that it is the only way to live simply because they live scared lives.
People would rather live a hundred years of boring, stagnant, uninteresting life than twenty years of fulfilling, authentic adventure.

It seems to me that black is based on the contemporary cult of the self, the idea that the self is the real core of a person and ties that “self” inextricably to capitalist success and ambition. It would be interesting to see a more nihilistic, zen interpretation of black, that sees ambition as another artifice occluding the true self

I thought this was such a good idea that I'm actually planning to implement it into the next campaign I run. Heads up, I wrote a flippin Novel:
My favourite videos are the ones where you explain the Red, Black, Green Shard
and the one where you explain Blue + White guild on that's directly opposed to it.
I'm not a Magic Player, so I don't really care about the specific names
Or even the giveaway for that matter.
I just came here to get inside the Magic Player's head,
Sure I know about card game strategies and how card advantage works,
But I wanted to feel that thrill of discovery as I got a peak underneath the surface.
I've always known intuition and chaos are fundamental to my personality,
What I didn't know was that these were not related to Black,
But I wasn't disappointed to find that black was even better than I imagined.
It's quite funny, that in every card game I play I never like playing light/colourless,
Now I understand that it's not because I think Darkness is cool,
But because they all use the same fundamental concept: a force of good blissfully ignorant to the harm they cause.
I've always hated laws, the concept of schools and being nice to people who clearly don't like me.
The Blue+White video I initially really disliked, but then when I thought about it more,
I found that I was upset, because I saw potential in Blue's love of discovery
And I felt like white was holding them back by sidetracking them with morals.
It's worth noting that at the time I knew nothing about Red other than something with fire.
And after watching more and more videos, things started to fall into place more and more,
I like Black, it's a relatable colour to me and the fact that people see it differently than I do
Is probably the best summary of me if you'd ever meet me in person.
However after doing the colour pie test you took in your video,
Some unexpected pieces connected, I expected to be mainly black with a lot of red and a bit blue,
Since those represent my self image and also had the most in common with TCG decks I like,
Worms (a mono dark control deck) in Duel Masters, Ojama (a troll deck that isn't supposed to be good) in Yu-Gio-Oh,
And Chip Damage in the Pokémon TCG. All underpowered (control) strategies based on seemingly weak cards.
However on the colour pie test I scored High on 4 out of 5 colours, with Red being the clear winner.
Suddenly I didn't see the before listed strategies as these brutal and evil strategies,
But recognised that it's more about the Fury of the Small and not being scared to play dirty if needed.
Worms aren't just an engine of destruction, the evolved forms just go to any length to get rid of any threat to their youngs.
Ojama's aren't just ugly basterds who successfully annoy your opponent, they're a family of misfits defending their home.
And the poisoning, stunning and sleeping wasn't stalling out a quick game, it was proving that these commons nobody wanted
Just need a little bit of love and a dash of luck and they can take down even a legendary pokémon.
What's interesting is that I'm pretty sure white probably excels in some of these aspects,
But I don't care, because from an ideological standpoint, white is more a burden than an asset to me.
So I'd rather explore the colours I'm drawn to naturally first.

Black rejects the idea that "selfish" is an ugly word. It encourages you to prioritize yourself, to not hurt yourself because of abstracts imposed from without. At its healthiest, Black makes you conscious of your own value as an individual, that you deserve happiness, pleasure, wellness and comfort. It leads you to set up boundaries, and to defend those boundaries. It tells you that your life is short, and therefore it should be the best it could possibly be, whatever form that "best" might take.
Black understands that no love is purely selfless. There is always something you want from your relationships, and that's okay. As long as both parties are aware of this, and willing to put in the work so both their needs are met. Because to black, to not acknowledge your own selfishness is irresponsible, it's self-deception. It's an inescapable facet of human existence, and rather than punish yourself for it, it wants you to find peace with it.

I can definitely see black's complexity in it's outlook. For me personally I think I have a small amount of black in my own personality, enough to understand and relate to its ideals about living your life for yourself and your own happiness, but I disagree with the parts of black that would disavow others to do so. Everyone else is also looking to live for themself and deserves happiness as well, and I would try to avoid messing with that if possible.

Misunderstood. Morality is relative. Therefore, what is good and what is evil is relative. The only way to clearly delineate between good and evil is for there to be an established standard, that is unchanging, accepted, and enforced by an authority that is omniscient, omnipotent, and unchanging. As a result, unless such an absolute exists, Black is focused on ensuring that the "Self" is the focus.

Literally the most accurate description of black's morality, I have yet heard. "I am not evil, because I say I'm not evil and no one more powerful then me is telling me I'm wrong."

I like to describe black as "the colour of rushing to finish a hot drink, trying not to burn yourself". This is moreso related to the mechanics of black.
This video has given me a new perspective: black is denial of circumstance. Black defies fate.
Edit: i still have no idea how to describe the way black plays in a concise ad definite way (eg, white is communiality, mutual support, and tokens).

The whole series on the different colour and colour combination philosophies has been fascinating.
Personally, I've always tended to lean towards Green/Black when playing Magic. That's probably due to my starting to play Magic as a Golgari player (the art of Golgari Guildmage on the box kind of sucked me into buying my first cards in 2005). But the philosophy of the Structures of Prosperity Abzan video feels more like me as a person, and is definitely my favourite video here so far (albeit not by much over the video on the Golgari pairing!). The idea that the addition of White to the Golgari pairing completes the circle of life and death just feels right. Its also lead to me starting to look at building decks in other colours as well - starting with Abzan, but starting to branch out into Mardu and Temur.

  • @U.Inferno
    @U.Inferno ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm going to be bold to argue that unconditional love isn't outside of Black's domain as one might think. Because Black is amoral and irreligious, by disregarding the prospect of a higher authority, it is honest about these deeds in themselves. White as a collectivist and spiritual color is just as conditional as Black, the conditions are just with higher forces than with others.
If Black helps someone and they don't get *anything* out of it, it doesn't throw a fit and go "why didn't you pay me back?!!" It's honest about the state of the world and instead goes "well duh, of course I got nothing out of it. That's how things are." Hell, if Black is betrayed, it's the least likely to lay blame on the traitor. It should have known better. White will be calling up divine retribution against them while Black instead goes "That's on me."
And yet it also isn't out there for Black to keep doing it. The coldness of Blue means it's far more conditional with its decisions. White's concept of a greater good and community as a means of good deeds is ultimately done because it's "good for the soul" or whatever. Green's also out of service to the community and the way of the world. Red, more than anything, does so because the act itself feels good, nothing more.
So while Black probably does good conditionally, as with blue, it also does good because it genuinely wants to, to an almost selfish degree, as with Red. Black can look at the nature of the world and go "Existence is cruel, so I won't be."

    Incoming cringe:
So when I was younger I used to absolutely, to an almost unhealthy extreme, abhor the color black in MTG. I never made a deck with the color. In fact I used to play Selesnya just because it was the anti-black colors. I wanted to have the ideals of a hero essentially.
After a particularly nasty breakup I went and got some therapy. As I spoke to my therapist we came to the conclusion that I could be described as "an extremely prideful, self-focused, and pragmatic individual"
I felt horrible. I sounded like I was a giant shitbag, which to be fair I was, but my therapist helped me see it another way.
Essentially while I was all of those things, they were not necessarily bad traits. They could be good tools to get far in life, and if I was aware of the kind of person I was I could be a good partner.
Which became true. I'm a more successful individual with many healthy relationships, because I am aware of the kind of person I am and can be. I've reshaped the way I view my self, my relationships, and my actions. I am prideful and ambitious, but that doesn't mean I have to be a shitbag. It just means that my driving motivations come from those ideals.
I also now play black decks in MTG. I saw pieces of myself that I hated in that color, but by learning what kind of person I truly am, I have also learned to be a good person, and turn my faults into positive motivations.

Maybe it’s cheating but I’ve come to love all your three color/pie videos. Delving into the complexity of these multicolor philosophies has really helped grow my appreciation of how the colors can be used to shape characters/organizations in my story telling and helped clarify some of the personalities I’ve sometimes struggled to articulate. These are great videos, and I’d love to see more; perhaps ones that directly discuss how these more complex color combinations can express themselves? This video, and how you’ve offered a broader look at Black, is exactly why I love this channel. Thank you!

I think there's a fine line between inclusive unconditional love & committed unconditional love: the former being the common understanding of the phrase, the Love Everyone Regardless; the latter is where I see black mana, the Ride-or-die sort of love you mention. To this end, I'd say that Black actually is one color which is most easily associated with "unconditional" love, even if not by the typical understanding of the phrase.

Good description of Black philosophy. Personally when I think of a Black aligned character it makes me think of the philosophy in the book The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. Not only from the title but it offers an argument against altruism that a moral person could make. Important since so many associate the color with evil.

Small video suggestion (spoilers ahead for those unfamiliar with the story in Amonkhet)
During the story of Amonkhet, we learned that Nicol Bolas actively manipulated the mana in that plane such that it would create an expression of it in service to him. In that sense, much like in Strixhaven the colors have a unique way of expressing themselves as they are "filtered" through a less natural way of expressing themselves. After seeing how much you enjoyed the unique iteration of the colors in Strixhaven, I think this might be an interesting topic for you to cover.
Of course, this is just a suggestion, one I would love if you would consider it, but naturally its not my decision to make. Just think it would be interesting and you might enjoy it as well.

    - Using M:tG color identity in D&D! It's something I've been planning to do in my own Theros D&D campaign, that's due to start soon-ish. I liked hearing your angle on it, and it reinforced my desire to try it. I'm getting my players to pick colors alongside their class, race, and (optional) deity so it's at the core of how they create. We'll see how it goes!

White/Black can also represent the perspective of someone who’s stood in the shoes of both sides.
    In other words-
Hey I know nobody’s perfect and I’m not gonna hide behind a wall of lies and ignore mine or anyone else’s flaws or problems.
Someone who is genuinely honest but still flawed and is not afraid to use questionable methods to get the job done because I’m not gonna hide behind a veil of lies.
Black/Green can also give a good perspective on life that yes ambition is good but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to happy with what you have and/or work at a slower pace and appreciate the positive things around you while also accepting and coming to terms with the negative aspects understanding there cannot be one without the other.
There’s always two sides to the same coin.

Now much older I identify with the black mana,I can't make the whole world good but I can still try making it good for myself and other 3 or 4 people, the rest may die for all I care.
I never really had any blue or green in me though.
Maybe when I die if a tree grows on my grave that is a green moment idk
[Edit] (when I think about it I think never really had the white part at all,as the inspirations from heroes were mostly about their power and ability to make things go their way.

Great video! The only part of the video that lost me a little bit was when you were talking about how black sees the people in positions of power and authority in white using it for personal selfish gain and defies that. That’s what Orzhov is/does. That’s black taking advantage of white’s vulnerabilities and drawbacks. At least from my perspective, and we all know how subjective that sort of thing can be.

You are right but that's the sort of compromises that happen when enemy colors pair up. Take Blue and Red for instance.
